I would go with the 135L myself. If you are going to be shooting a lot of models outside then this will be the lens to go for. However shooting models in a studio, well then 85 would be the one. You have got the 24-105 to cover the wide etc.
but that's just my personal space.
135 my be a bit long for full length, that was my only issue.

Last night was awesome, I was about 5 metres from the stage, had a great view of an amazing performance! Oh except the support act, rapper Kayne West was complete crap. He was soon forgotten though.
You would have been 5 meters in front of us...
Kayne West you say?
didn't get home 'till nearly 2am - them concert shuttle busses weren't awfully well planned...
Concert itself was excellant - good to see technology and talent used really well together.

Went out along the Catlins coast. Found plenty of waterfalls. Saw loads of tourists with Canon SLRs and a German bloke and his son stood behind commenting on the 1D with bigma. When I looked round he said 'Well equipped'. His son had a 350. Also came across three men at Nuggat point all with telescopes. I don't know whether they were whale watching, iceberg watching or twitching.
So two for Weka (and anyone else of course)

nice - generally resize done by \image\image size change to 800xwhatever or less, then USM a tad, then save as .jpg & wind the slider back until filesize is less than 78kb (for some reason of it's any bigger the actual size ends up bigger than the 100kb allowed)

Precisely. Western Springs speedway & Eden Park both have their share of clowns who think once they've bought a house next door they can dictate what the area gets used for. And the larger problem is the local concils who pander to these morons.

used it a little .. it slowed down the lens a touch but it was helpful.
The one thing i did notice is that it changes the whole balance of the lens, and you have to watch not to zoom rather than focus.
I must admit thou i found myself a great little spot inside a hairpin so i got cars approaching, turning and powering away - so the range of the 200 was spot on.
I was also hand holding all day so the tc gave more shake. Having said all that i had a blast. even in the rain. in march i will be heading south for timaru and then invercargill. (trying to score more media passes) (first two weekends in march i believe):D
this is one with at 400mm (using tc) no pp just a resize. full image is very sharp.

nothing but a good meal should help her..
the pose makes her a little masculine. without want to sound rude to her but it makes her look like a Klingon from star trek. a very high forehead and swept back hair. may be get her to turn her shoulders slightly toward you to soften her strong angles. And not sweep her hair back off face. ( for the first time in a long time my wife also agrees with me)

The biggest issue was the hair getting blown around. Will psot the better ones in the people section.

Also, I know you haven't done any pp, but lightening the shadow on her shoulder will help, smoothing some of the frown marks above her eyes, and perhaps turn it into 'portrait' orientation (seeing as it is a portrait shot).

Hi Weka: I Like it.
I think using the flash would help fill the shadows a little. Maybe try finding a spot int he shade so she doesn't have to squint.
In bright sunshine I usually turn people so their faces are in the shade, and use a reflector or the 580 as fill. The sunshine from behind makes a great hair-light.
This is not a good image, but one I took with a gold reflector, & sunshine from behind.

Now sit down people and offer up some information for me. This Saturday I have been asked to shoot some family type portraits. This is fine if it's outside and sunny (I have a reflector) but if the weather is crap (this is Southland) it will be inside in a marquee. So long as the light is OK I don't see too much of a problem BUT if it's too dark I don't have flash. (Canon didn't put a pop-up flash on the 1 series  .) What can I do? I'm not going to run out and buy a flash for one event. Will it be light enough inside the marquee for 2.8 or does anyone have any experience of shooting inside tents?

So... I also have a question about some lighting. I have been asked to do the photo's for Fancy That Gifts (www.fancythatgifts.co.nz) and was wondering how I could light these on a cheap scale. say no more than $60

Hi everyone. I just arrived at work.
Watch your white balance in the tent. It can realy screw up your colours. Either shoot raw or do a custom WB.
I have often shot in tents or pavilions & normally if there is enough light they give good results as they work like a huge softbox. If there isn't enough light then you will need a flash. If you don't have one then Pump up the ISO.
Hey Weka... hope the shooting is going well (went well).
The story theme is a difficult one.
Here are some ideas.
Talk to the model and find out what they are good at & try to incorporate that in your images. (Note.. I'm not good at this & also tend to shoot plain glamour)
Some examples.
Love
Fear
Fragile
Dance
Strength / Power.
I would start with something easy like love. Use flowers, & dreamy looks to bring some mood to your pictures. Talk to the model and try to get her to feel what you are wanting to show in your pictures. E.g. tell her she has just had her first date and is madly in love. now she is alone and thinking about that person. You will find her body language will change to the situation / story. Try to build on fantasies. Tell stories painting pictures of situations or places.
Good luck and keep it up. I have had my frustrations, like after a shoot where the model looks at all the pictures and sais something like I look fat in all of them! On tthe other hand the opposite can happen where they are happy with every photo. I recently had a shoot & got the model to select a few of her favourites. She selected 100 images. (Admitedly we did shoot for 6 hours and over 900 images).
I hope this helps. Peter

What sort of background do you want? White or black.
I built myself a photo table where I use a bent piece of white perspex to put the objects on.
I have built a tent over it where I hang some white nylon.
I use 3 lights. 1 below behind and the other 2 left and right. With this I can get objects on a white background where there is almost no work to isolate them. I have studio lights, but if you are shooting from a tripod, any light source will do as you can increase the length of the exposure.

Thanks for that. Shoot is mid afternoon so even if it's pissing down should be quite bright outside, so not too bad inside. Plus I now always shoot in raw.

Two or three halogen work lamps at $12 each can work with the tent. Just correct for the strong tungsten white balance. Because of the heat, I wouldn't try this for chocolate gifts.

Tony, how about keeping the exif info, so can provide some more details? Possibly the DOF is too shallow, although there's nice bokeh, doesn't quite look like you've nailed the focus spot on. Possibly you have, but in the resize hasn't come through like that?
Whenever I shoot people, I use centre point focus, lock on eyes, recompose (without moving the camera too much!), and should generally get a good shot.
For that shot I possibly may have brought the framing down 10% or so, to get some lower view, and less open space up the top.
Keep them coming

Your welcome to borrow it, just be warned that its rather large and bukly, and really needs to be set up on a largish table.
Product shooting isn't as wasy as it looks, especialy with an SLR. DOF becomes a real problem if you need lots of it. So far Iv actualy got my best results out of the my A80 with the 550 fired from the optical slave in manaul.

Hey guys, after living in Europe for 17 years, I have become pretty impressed with what NZ achieves with its large area and small population.
I live just outside Munich and can get a maximum broadband connection of 100 KBs. I haven't measured it yet to see what it realy is.
I have found that NZ being a smaller population, and having a bit of an inferiority complex is often very advanced. In NZ ii is easier to make changes, which is often the case. Here in Germany if they want to upgrade their telephone system, the logistics are huge.
The services I got in NZ years ago were still better than what you often get here now.
Sure there are things like 32000 kb/s Highspeed connections. BUT only if you live in the right place. & that is with a population density MUCH greater than in New Zealand

Sure there are things like 32000 kb/s Highspeed connections. BUT only if you live in the right place. & that is with a population density MUCH greater than in New Zealand
well I haven't been outside of NZ at all in my life. even tho there are places that I would like to vist. It doesn't feel like they seem that important to do. where I really wont to go is out of reach for humanity, but ohh well.
Anyway so what does your avatar mean?
