needed: loan of sigma 70 -200 or similar zoom Sunday 26th March

I know.....I know.....I have already PMed him, but I may be using it myself that day! Shocking isn't it that I may want to use my own lens.

I believe Pete is the only other one with a 70-200 f2.8, and his is already on loan to Moppie.

We all need to remeber that it is the goodwill of others to lend out their gear. To ask is often best done VIA PM not a big bold WANT. Owners reserve the right not to respond to requests or to say no. If you dont like the possibility of been turned down dont ask.

Wazza owns the most expensive glass, I own the most expensive camera. It is our right to offer our goods so when you are talking $4 /5.5 K thats alot of money to lend to someone. Many people have given up a lot to get their own glass, and time is a combodity that they have little of.

By all means put up your requests to borrow, but dont expect anything this will save you been dissapointed.

My commute is from my bedroom downstairs to my lounge upstairs. For lunch I have to walk to the kitchen (or more often, burger king!). The only downside is i'm always at work!

My commute is down to my motorbike and off anywhere within a 100km radius from home.
I get paid to ride around and play with computers

It's easier to think of me as Superman.

I am happy to loan my gear to people I know, and I have benifitted from borrowing peoples gear. It is very usefull, especially when trying to work out what your next piece of kit might be. But lets not forget who's gear it is and who paid for it.....that's all.

Fair enough.
I was just pushing the message out, as I hadn't seen any discussion whether, offers or declines.. So was wondering how he was getting on.

Anyway, it's for D1 NZ, and I think the most useable focal lengths would be 17-100mm, and possibly a longer lens for coming off the first straight into the esses at Pukekohe, but the panning shots, and fun ones, are generally right next to the track. I'd give my 70-300 if asked. :o

Scott had already explained the situation to me. I will have a crack with the 18 - 125 and see how that goes, I could always have a crack with nifty :).

on to a different topic:

got a call from Harvey Normans yesterday, they hadn't heard back from canon with regards to my 18 - 55 thats in for repair. They rang canon and canon said 4 week turn around for their repairs. I guess I will be lucky to see it this side of easter

tim

They bother to repair an 18-55? That's the kit lens right? Isn't it cheaper and easier just to toss it and give you a new one? Even better toss it away yourself, you have better lenses.

its under warrenty so it would be stupid not to. There are times its good to have a lens that your not to concerned if it gets busted.

I will probably end up putting it up on trade me though $1 reserve :)

Having a look at some of the exif data from other peoples shots from similar spots the 18 - 125 may just cover the range I need. the main reason I mentioned the 70 - 200 f/2.8 is that that is the lens I am looking at purchasing next.

but no hurry. After this weekend I have until around June to test/ fall in love with/ and purchase one :)

Try and compare prices to www.cathayphoto.com.sg (http://www.cathayphoto.com.sg) -- I purchased my old stuff from them at very competitive prices. Only problem is they require bank drafts... If you know what you want, you can ask them to email you a quotation then you can decide to confirm at a later date.

Yep! As Duncan mentions they have a nice shop too. I miss going to that "fine" city... so many nice electronic toys at real bargain prices... that's if you know where to look. SIM LIM Square is also another good place to go...

BUT, you need to know your prices first. Doing homework is critical. If they can rob you blind they will.

Nah, you don't want a 400mm lens. What you really want for surfing shots is a 1-series body and a fisheye lens, get yourself right up to the action. Maybe a 10-20 would be ok. Think of the shots you could take!

So why are our prices in the shops so dam expensive, dont they realise we now have access to the rest of the world. . .

Other than higher labour and over-head costs, the retailers here can be a little greedy. There too are people who can't be bothered (or are frightened) of purchasing things on line (aren't you glad we're so adventurous?)

With the advent of eBay, and other on-line stores (e.g., B&H, Adorama) that virtually ship anywhere in the world, people like us are able to take advantage of prices from countries that have 1) lower import duties, e.g. HK & Singapore; 2) lower overhead costs - HK; 3) far larger markets, e.g. USA; blah blah blah...

If what I heard is correct, only 25% of the population have computers... of that, less than 1/4 purchase on-line... so... there you have it.

Well I got absolutely drenched, camrea came through surprisingly well considering how wet it got, only issue was lens fogging on the 18 - 125 (ended up using nifty until the other came right)

then got home to a house with no power :(

its one of those days

I got wet. Very wet.

Forunatly all the gear stayed dry, plastic bags, some sellotape and big white a lens a with long hood proved very useful.
The 24-70 with a 580ex was then fantastic for the price giving inside club house in really bad light.

I have 397 photos to sort through (got love high speed, I was worse than Warren with the shutter button) but Ill get round to posting some during the week.

Thanks again to everyone who loaned me Kit!

All the best for the coming week to everyone!

I'm starting it off by driving Tina to the High Court first thing in the morning:( She was chosen for jury service, and her company doesn't exempt employees -- their way of supporting the justice system. I just hope she isn't chosen. A couple of mates mentioned that it can be stressful especially when rape cases are heard...

While waiting for her, I'll be heading to the export office and see whether there are opportunities to sell some NZ made stuff back in Manila -- doing my part to keep the local economy moving ;-)

Cheers!

Get another 550ex and ST-E2 you will be set.

When are you up next? Ive got 1 x 580ex 2x550 ex 1x ST-E2 you could play with before you buy.
Inside is great but not sure about the range outside, reports not that great. Makes it easier with out the 580ex on camera as master. I love the freedom to move around my "model"

I like having the 580EX on camera as fill - all I really need is a backlight. No point in overlighting things, and since i'm full time at photography now and not working in IT I have to be more careful with the $$$. I'd love to get another slave (2nd hand 550EX maybe), Sigma 30mm F1.4, protech strap, and a couple of other little things before the NZD is worth absolute peanuts.

Thanks Warren. Made it through the first 2 - murder & rape... the lawyers of the Crown "challenged" her -- which was a good thing! BUT, she has to return to the jury room tomorrow to see whether she will be chosen for a drug case -- someone caught supplying P, and precusrsors... What a morning!

While waiting for Tina to get out of the "Jury Room" I had a walk around town... Dropped by Photo Warehouse and Camera & Camers to check prices for an 82mm CP... wow, those things cost an arm... Sigma EX CP was $300++ and Marumi CP was $172... Looks like I will be looking around eBay or B&H again...

BTW, I got to hold a 5D... drool, drool, drool... maybe in a couple of years... the 40D or 50D will have all the bells & whistles that the 5D has... I can but only dream... ;-)

I had jury service last year, lots and lots of waiting around, only to find the case was thrown out by the judge because a witness didn't want to testify.
Foruntatly the company was very good, and paid me my full wages, but I felt sorry for those who ran thier own bussiness, or whos employer didn't want to pay them, as the money from the court is only a token of what most people earn, and not enough to cover lost wages.

Some good news though, I just won an iPod Nano for helping out with the company golf day yesterday, as well as a couple of bottles of wine, and I have a check for $200 in my hands.

John - I haven't scouted back through the thread to see why you are not 100%, but I hope for your sake, you're 100% soon. Full houses are always tiring affairs.

I was called up to Jury Duty once... they sent the request care of my mother in Te Puke for Duty at the North Shore District Court (about 2 years ago)..
Um.. I live in Auckland?

My mother forwarded it to me. I never went to Jury Duty. The request got 'lost in the mail...

MY flatmate had jury service on a drug case, I think. He was head jurer, got paid nicely.

Wazza I partially agree with your call on a suitable lens fro the drifting but feel that 125 can be a bit short, especially if trying to get them going off the straight and towards carstol corner (when standing @ castrol) if there was a 50 - 200 f2.8 that would be ideal :)

not sure if D1 will be able to run around at Puke this year as the judged section is off limits to everyone (including puke staff apparantly)

Phew, so I have just caught up on 2 days of rambling, there is a lot to go through.

Moppie, my apologies for mot having you come in for a drink, dinner was almost served, and a certain little girl was on her final warning...

Anyway, on my soap box time, most of you know I am a storage guy, I work with data and backing it up as my key areas in my job (now working for Dell), and when I say you must backup, I mean it, so stop yakking and go backup your photos...

...still reading huh? Not important, you will do it when you get around to it, well shock tactic time, I bet the data recovery guys can't save you from this crash:

And a nice closeup:

It looks even more dramatic in person :)

What I find incrediable is I have stripped drives down to the bare disc and tried to do this with them at work, all I ever manage to do is bend them in half, which usualy requires a LOT of pressure.
If they just shattered it would save me a lot of time, and the company a lot of money :)

Ill definitly show these to the marketing team and GM Pete, they might find a use for them on our new website.

Now, what Im curious about is are removable drives just as vunerable?

More and more companies are useing them for weekly, and even daily back ups, sending us drives in thier enclosures packed in foam in a Pelican Case.

Tomorrow will be configuring my son's wireless connection... oh boy...

Don't forget to configure security and MAC address filtering, otherwise any ole guy with a laptop will end up using your connection, standard WEP and MAC filtering usually puts it in the two hard basket for most opportunists, won't stop a determined hacker though.

So how did the drive break, well that particular model, the infamous IBM DeskStar 75GXP (aka DeathStar) has about a 99% failure rate, so that one was dead anyway. This drive uses glass platters instead of aluminium.

Anyway I had it stuck to my wall in my office in my drive "Hall of shame", the front was already off so I could see the inners, yesterday morning when I got down to my office I found it and lots of broken glass on my desk, it had fallen down during the night! Not all the glass escaped, the photos show the drive exactly as I found it.
