Yeah I just mentioned on MSN, the first is best, nice composition, good use of lighting, and good DOF...

At least they're both naturals when it comes to posing. :)

In other news...
Just got my tickets of:

Auckland to Wellington, Wellington to Blenheim on 2nd March 2007

And then Blenheim to Wellington, and Wellington to Auckland 4th March 2007.

Photographing a wedding on Saturday 3rd March, and will be doing getting ready shots in the morning, and then driving 45min North to the edge of the Marlborough Sounds I beleive, and boarding a boat...

The wedding is being covered by one of my former clients
www.warrenwilliams.co.nz/weddings/glasswell/

As a wedding gift for their good friends, who don't know I'm coming.

Pretty awesome if you ask me!

Holy crap, they're gorgeous! Good photos there.

When people look good it's much easier. Get them to stand there, take a head shot, make sure the lighting's not flat, it'll be a good shot. Then have a laugh. I don't pose people at weddings, I get them to do what they want to do and take photos while they do it, with a small amount of direction only. With girls like that you want to show off their curves and how slim they are, you did a good job at that.

Er Nothing. I did a whole series of my family a year or so ago.
My wife is an egg (She doesn't like that), one son is an avocado, The youngest is an onion, and I'm an orange. When I needed an avitar, I thought it looked pretty cool. Recently I did some Kiwifruit photos for a new avitar, Just haven't got a Roundtuit.

Nice web page Tim. It's looking more & more professional.

I have some larg clear freezer bags and rubber bands in my camera bag. I put the camera inside, and use a rubber band to hold it closed around the lens. I can look through the eye piece. It's not as clear as without looking through the plastic, but enough for framing....and the camera stays dry. I could cut a hole for the eye piece I guess, but I lost it.

Amen! So where are the rest of the photos? :D

Photographing a wedding on Saturday 3rd March, and will be doing getting ready shots in the morning, and then driving 45min North to the edge of the Marlborough Sounds I beleive, and boarding a boat...

Where exactly are you going Wazza? (Which Sound - Queen Charlotte, Pelorus?)

tim looks good - could i suggest that you reorder the buttons..

Order makes sense to me;

1. Gallery - what most people will look at first.
2. Packages - to see if they can afford what they've been looking at.
3/4. Proofs - maybe this could come after contact, as most people won't be looking at this.
3/4. Contact - get hold of you after working out they can afford you.
5. About - most people probably won't look at this unless they've already looked at everything else on the site.

I'm not personally that fond of the big reflective buttons, they don't seem to match the font at the bottom either?

No idea the exact details, but just know the couple live in Blenheim, and boarding a boat, which is 40min drive away, looking at the map, to me looked like it would be on the coast towards Picton, however was told it's not that far up.

The wedding I shoot in a couple of days, I think I will just use my own flash, although it's not working properly, with no red light emitting for focussing assist, however the wedding is outside at the domain or something.. But I've been asked to cover some stuff in the evening, just hope it's not so dark, so the camera can still focus ok.

Perhaps I may borrow one, but only use it if I absolutely have to.

And may buy a cable, as I would need a 2nd one anyway, and get my one repaired soon.

Ah the expense. Paid $252 for travel insurance, to cover $10K worth of stuff for Kirst and myself going to Fiji on 29th December..

Tim: with the buttons, yeah they've got a large shadow, changing the weight of the top bar...

Also although they're centred, it's giving the illusion that they don't like up with the text on the left, because that is so fine / and in lower case...

Anyway, you're getting work, so what's to worry. :p

About is last in help menus so its at the bottom - ie its the first thing you see. Besides, its not exactly wise to base anything around some ms product..

When you go to a photographers website, you go to see photos... Therefore, gallery goes first. At least, that's what seems logical to me.

Think of it this way, in order to get business from your website, you NEED; A gallery to show what you do, packages to show your price, and contact info to let them buy your product.

The other two are still important, but less so than the first three (you can get your proofs to the customer another way if needed, and you don't have to talk about yourself on the website, altho it is probably interesting for prospective clients.)

It's got nothing to do with MS products, or Help, or anything else IMO, just selling to a potential customer.

For good reason! It's the main point of the website.

I'm not personally that fond of the big reflective buttons, they don't seem to match the font at the bottom either?

I should match the fonts, yeah, I used the default in the button psd file I downloaded. I found the link to the button page from digg, something about web 2.0 style buttons.

Tim: with the buttons, yeah they've got a large shadow, changing the weight of the top bar...

nope.

Joe Bloggs arrives at website.. He sees that it says xyz photography, but thats all he knows. Hes looking for a photographer to take his companys corporate headshots. He's not going to look for that information in the gallery, is he? He needs to know more about the photographer before he starts evaluating his work.

About goes first.

Once he knows that xyz Photography does do corporate headshots, and is based in wellington but can travel to lower hutt (all found in the about page) he can move on to the gallery, see what his work is like.

Gallery goes second.

He likes what he sees in the gallery. xyz has some really good shots in there, and Mr Bloggs would like some just like that for his company.
But, he needs to know more. How much will they cost? Those photos in the gallery looked so good they probably cost a few million dollars each. He can now move on to the packages page.

Packages goes third..

Now he can see that they infact do not cost a few million dollars each, only a mere fraction of that. Great. Mr Bloggs is now decided to use xyz photography for his companys headshots. On to the contact page to let xyz know the good news.

Contact goes fourth..

After the day of the shoot, Mr Bloggs logs on to xyz photographys website to check out the online proofs before they are sent to print. He doesnt need to go through the about > gallery > packages > contact order because he knows where hes going by now.. and can go straight to the end for the proofs.

about - gallery - packages - contact - proofs

It has nothing to do with MS and help menus correct. IT has to do with a simple straightforward, and logical layout of your website. People do not want the first thing they see on your website to be a directory listing of your gallery.

The gallery is not the main point of your website.. or at least it shouldn't be.

People are going to want to see what you do, for how much you do it, and how to contact you.

People do not want to see a gallery listing of a bunch of images that mean nothing to them. Show your best work on your website sure, in good moderation.

The gallery should be there so that once somebody can see you can do good work they can check down into more specific elements (ie studio work) to see what your like there.

Your website shouldn't look like an online store for your photos, which it will do if the gallery is your main focus.

DiscoLizard

How does Joe Bloggs arrive at the website in the first place?

He searches for Photos, Corporate Headshots, Wellington, New Zealand

Either that, or he's been given a referral by someone.

Either way, Joe already knows a few choice details about what kind of photography he's going to be offered.

TBH, I really think that there should be an about section on the index page - a short description of who you are and what you do. (No more than 3 sentences.)

Instead of an "About" section, you could then have a bio section.

The gallery is not the main point of your website.. or at least it shouldn't be.

Your website shouldn't look like an online store for your photos, which it will do if the gallery is your main focus.

Maybe a better word to use would be "Portfolio" instead of gallery?

The portfolio should be the main point of your website because it is your key driver of business. If your portfolio is no good, you get no business. If people can't see your photos, they won't hire you.

I agree that the portfolio should be relatively small, not a directory listing of every shoot you've ever been on. But I think Tim already knows that :D

Hehe - yep I absolutely agree with you there, or I wouldn't have stayed in PN. Despite a love of fast cars, the 'fast life' doesn't necessarily appeal, and of course, the lack of traffic now they have fixed or are fixing most of the problems (used to take an hour or more to get home, now only 15 mins).

Boy those two look like manequins!!!
Was probably an interesting night.

Wit regards to Palmerston North. I always said, it was ideally situated to get out of.
20 mins to Foxton beach, 2 hrs from Wellington, 2 from Ruapehu, and 2 1/2 from Lake Taupo. We had a holiday batch there (Still do, I just can't use it very much).
Palmy was also a good size as a kid, as I could bike everywhere in the city & didn't need to use public transport or my parents to get e around.

By the way. My icon before was of an Orange... not a pumpkin

normally I find those to be Nikon users tho. This year when I was at the V8's a nikon users decided to stand by us for a while, every time a car would go past he would shoot some photos then look at us. which was Warren, iKirst and myself. not to sure what he was on. he did look like he had a snobbish attitude about him.

Been thinking about that one for awhile - I'm looking for an in-line RJ-45 socket to use so one can just pluck whatever length cat-6 patchlead off the shelf one needs for the job...
Something like PCMCIA network cards use on their dongles, but would have to be robust.

You could always go Canon cable to PS2, then have a short PS2 to RJ45 cable.

I wouldn't be charging yet...

You've shot 2 or 3, and they're starting to pass your name around. I'd wait until I had 5+ who I felt I'd done a really good job with. There are always models who want to get their photos taken, but once you start charging, you move into a whole different field - the business side of things has to be set up first, GST etc. Not to mention if, for some reason, a model isn't happy with her shots after paying for it, your name will go around just as fast as it has at the moment, but in a much less favourable light.

If you have the confidence and the ability to get to paid sessions (and I know you do), then why rush? Better to do things right, and do them once than to learn from mistakes that you can't fix.

Just playing devils advocate. Feel free to ignore :D

tim

Weka, based on the portfolio on your pbase site and a couple I remember seeing on here i'd 2nd DiscoLizard's suggestion - you need more experience and a better portfolio before you can start charging. There's no hurry, you need to get a good number of "wow" shots behind you first.

Then again look what I did, I just started out cheap and got a little better, but I put in about on average 4 hours per day for 18 months, I guess, to improving.

Sandra "Show me the money honey" yes dear Im working on it

I know that one. Had a discussion with my wife this morning. Probably has something to do with the $3000 laptop I bought last week.

I earn relatively good $ through stock photography, so have about $2000 ready to transfer when then November payments come in.

I practised for a long time before charging anyone. Still practice. I need to work out a pricing strategy too. My shooting this week was Waaaay too cheap. My colleague said she only wanted a couple of pictures for a christmass preasent. But on the evening we ended up shooting about 300 photos in all sorts of different clothes etc. Admitedly I did some experimentation with the light, but at the end of it all I will probably have invested 6 hours for about $60. Not to mention the equipement used.
What do other people use for pricing schemes?

@Joseph. I just changed my telephone system from Telecom to another company which comes with broadband etc etc. The switch took 6 hours. Admitedly the two telephone companies work a little closer together. Good luck anyway.

Hi everyone. Hope you had a good Sunday. Mine's just beginning.
Wazza. What do you do having to work on a Sunday?
Yesterday I got frustrated trying to put in a network in my house. I need to get the cable from basically bottom right to top left. Thought it wouldn't be a problem to pull the cable through where the television cable comes down from the roof, but that is so blocked I couldn't even pull te cable out. So I started drilling. They build pretty solid houses here in Germany. After about 3 hours of drilling with various drills, bits etc. I still haven't got a hole between the ground & 1st floor. Might need a bit of TNT.
Can anyone tell me, when joining network cables (I need to join 2x 10m) do I need a twisted joiner or a straight one. I was in a shop yesterday & they only had a twisted one.

I hope you didn't do anything to cause any problems, and if not, then maybe there is still a chance, but maybe only if you can get your wife to do it with you.

Hey Tony, sorry to hear of your problems. We don't have any waterfalls near where I live. And any ones worth photographing are so overrun with tourists that there is no chance of photographing models. A shame you can't do it for me.
I hope you didn't do anything to cause any problems, and if not, then maybe there is still a chance, but maybe only if you can get your wife to do it with you.
You are right that 12 years of marriage aren't worth risking. I look forward to hearing your new plans.
Peter

I did nothing wrong. My wife is just looking after her man
"Prevention is better than cure"

I respect her for that. I would want to protect her as well should she want to photograph 2 men in boxers while I was at work.
She is trying to protect the photographer not the Model. Must be worried that im so irritable that both models would want to jump me :)

If they're true models, or everyday girls that's fine.

It's the slapper / promo / in your face sex girls, that I won't photograph.

So did I. Now I have to canel all my bookings... I WILL make money out of my photography. All this little set back does is make me more determined.
There are just so many benefits from having an assistant - chaperone, witness on your behalf, gofer, reflector stand, spectator remover, in-shot checker of clothing tags and other distracting objects, distraction of model while you change gear or fix err 99, porter...

Both of you are right, but as you say, there may be ways to work out a solution and I hope you find one. Not knowing whether you would have been successful will eat at you and your relationship.

Perhaps when you are 70 you will be allowed.

Theses are girls from nitro models who want proffesional photgraphs. There are also others wanting to get into a modeling career that dont have many photos for their portfilio.

I dont do slappers. However I have had requests for topless and nudes (classy the stuff you would find in the G/N section)

Any one else intreseted. I need to check that this ideas is ok with my wife.

Yeah I've seen the Nitro girls around.. Plus others.

Carena and Danielle seem to be everywhere.
Including the recent D1NZ drift queen search.

Depends what day your shoot is, as to whether I can make it along.

classy is good. Trouble is some people's definition of classy doesn't equal mine, or others' definition of it. I've seen stuff in the G/N section that I wouldn't take myself, but other postings there are really great quality art.
