Back from the zoo.

The heavy shower didn't deter me.. I had my rain jacket.. But just as I put it all together, there wasn't a drop of rain left!

And what's with being kicked out at 5pm, when the zoo hours clearly show as 5:30pm and on their website?!

Hard to see through the plastic cover, so shot AV mode, ISO 200/400, F5.6/6.3, around 1/200-1/400th. And -2/3 RAW

Its not that hard..... to do. Its a lot of work, checking lights looking for odd body out of line issues. Dont really have time to "look"

Im at a good age as well. Everything is proffessional. My name means more to me than anything in this game.

I'm not saying I would be coming on to the model, or anything. Just my photos wouldn't be that good because I would be distracted. If you can concentrate on the phography and get the results you are after, then good on you.

I have just finished implementing my new backup strategy.

Upgraded my old 10Mb Hubs to 100Mb switches (I know Gb would have been nice, but I am on a budget!) Moved my 120Gb IDE Hard Drive that I use for onsite backups from my desktop to one of my "servers" that live in the cupboard to get some seperation between my primary storage and backup drive. (I use a simple robocopy script to mirror my data partition to the 120Gb drive) Archived a whole lot of older stuff and all my RAW files up to about a month ago to 2 sets of DVDs (one will go offsite). So now I don't need to upgrade my Hard Drive as I have got heaps of space again, and also reduced the size of my backups. Then did a full backup of my data partition to DVD, which will go offsite with the archive DVDs.

Which gives me
1) Primary Storage on SATA drive in my desktop
2) 2 archive copies of old files and RAWs on DVD. One onsite, the other offsite.
3) An onsite copy of the Primary Storage on a hard drive in a server tucked away out of sight.
4) An offsite copy of the Primary Storage on DVD.

So after talking about it, but not doing very much for ages, I finally feel like my photos are reasonably safe.

Well I'm back home.

Ended up staying till midnight.

I actually met a pro who wasn't snobby!

Had a Nikon D2X, with softbox being triggered by light, off her diffuser/flash.
The images looked really good on the screen and apparently she's giving all images on CD to work. Unedited, looked great, nice exposure, all from a single light source - although think I saw a hair light to at head level off to the side.

So these images were uploaded to a laptop, and showing on 4 different projectors throughout the Convention centre - All in all, a great fun night. With some embarrassing moments by work colleagues, all caught on CF card ;)

PS.

The lady photographer is,

www.birgit-photography.com

Got some nice portfolio work, and a good history it seems.

Personally I used my 580EX straight on camera, but had some difficulty focussing in pitch blackness. And used 85mm a lot, around F3.2, and 17-40L for some group shots later.

Anyway, sleep time. Work again tomorrow, and I'm team leader again, so better set a good example - good job I don't drink. Coke it was.

You know at some point, you will have to develop you own style. Learn the basis and then move on from there. From what I have seen you know the basis, when it comes to Photoshop. Remember that if everyone did the same thing then it would boring.

Play with what you got and see what you like. Follow that.

If however you wish to make money from it then you already have the skills.

I had the reflector with me too. I didnt want to use a flash incase it blew out the umbrella and her skin.

No wonder the good photos you see are been done by people who have been at it for a while. They know all the things to do.

I was in AV mode F8 for most of them ISO 320. Had a few blur which was odd untill I see 1/30 1/45 shutter speeds :(

If you're centering her, I would have done a portrait shot, or if landscape, off centred to the left as Tim has suggested. Her eye is a bit covered too.

As for aperture, for a single person shot, I'd always shoot F 2.8 - F5.6, and using F8 if it's a group shot. For several reasons..

1) Isolating subject
2) Sharper appearance
3) Faster shutter speed to avoid camera shake, even with an IS lens... She could easily move, blurring a bit at 1/30th... I'd aim for 1/100th + especially with my 85mm lens I use. I got caught out myself with 85mm and 1/30th.. Looked ok on LCD, till I noticed not up to the usual sharp standards.. Lessons learned. :)

At least you're getting out there, and experimenting.

My family are all down this way, I rarely come up to Auckland. I'll be in the Napier area over new years, that's about the closest I think i'll be in the next wee while.

I don't have any tips that I can remember, but if you post images I can maybe suggest things. It's easy to suggest from the comfort of my chair, it's much harder to get out and do them. My current project is off camera lighting for wedding receptions, and making good lighting for wedding shots of the B&G, in the small amount of time we usually have.

Still a nice picture.
My comments would be the same as above.
1) Too centred.
2) A reflector or fill flash would help on the face.
3) The hand is cropped at the bottom.

When trying to shoot scenes, just try and have the foreground (her), and background the same exposure/brightness levels, making it a lot easier. - The image as a whole is very underexposed, but you knew that already with the sunlight on her :p

All you can really do is do it again, but plan the shoot on the time of day, or on overcast conditions.

Try perhaps 1/4 second, tripod, soft fill flash to freeze her motion (and tell her to stand still :p).

Sorry to hear about the death Warren - not always easy on the team when someone suddenly goes... I just hope that the death isn't "post work do related" -- the company is going to have to do heaps of explaining to the PC brigade, e.g., if she was pissed, did the company provide alternative transport so as for her not to end up wrapping her car around the post... etc., etc., etc.

So, how did this one go? Tony, what's important is that you are learning from your mistakes -- I always tell my boys, don't be afraid to make mistakes... learn from them, move on, and don't repeat them. You do it once, then it is not your fault, you do it 2-3X then you are all to blame for your misery.

Man, difficult typing that before 9am and the caffein kicking in:p

John: Yeah it was made clear at time before the event, "drink responsibily, especially those working Sunday" - and as it ended "we have ordered lots of taxis, waiting out front" (never seen so many before!) - well at Sky City anyway. Still nothing I can find in the media.. Must be investigating the cause before it's released.

The only ones who weren't responisble were the bar staff serving my heavily intoxicated colleagues, I even went up to one of them at the BAR... WTF you doing mate? - as he picks up 2 wine glasses just ordered (all free), and drops them.. Apparently later, he also knocked over all the glasses at another table.

Well another day closer to Fiji. I'm anticipating this day. Should be a holiday to remember, and my first overseas trip with my loved one, Kirst. :) :D :p

They have gone anti press lately, it would be better to say the truth, Wedding Photographer, and they won't do much. They don't want pics taken no more at their barracks, or of their soldiers. Lucky the airport is in Nadi, where there's no so much bother, but we're staying on the coral coast.

My normal waterfall spot. Maybe better on an overcast day

Here's literally 30 seconds worth of processing (quick and dirty), but you get the idea that it's very easy to adjust the exposure on fore or background with very little work, even on a jpg. With a raw file the results are even better.

Shadow/highlight tool works great. Also be careful of the height you stand - you're obviously at her head height for that shot, i'd suggest chest height is better.

Momentz... The chick looks like it has been put in there. she looks a lot brighter than the actually waterfall, doesn't work for me. Sorry

I didn't edit the chick at all - she's masked out. Compare to the original. She also looks stuck on due to my 30 second mask job, with the dark outline around her. As above, it was to show it can be done, and with maybe 5 minutes as opposed to 30 seconds, a shot which looked far too dark can be recovered.

The reflecions of the wires are a bit distracting. Why didn't you go and chop them down before you took the picture?

As for the waterfall shot, I don't find it too bad. Maybe a maschette (How do you spell that) in the hand or something to make it look like an explorer or something might have added a bit of a theme to the picture.

I bought some gear through B&H last year. By the time I had paid the transport, the Tax and the import duty it wasn't any cheaper than buying here. And if I buy here I would have less problems / hassles with replacements / guarantees. Luckily I haven't had any.
I think it is worth paying a bit more to get somethig from where you live. If there is an error or you have to send something back, the shipping costs would remove any advantage of buying it overseas.

Good evening everyone.

While we are talking about filters, a question for all you Sigma 10-20 lenses, there are a couple of you. I am picking one of these up just prior to christmas (present to self).
UV filter, go for same size as lens (77mm). Filter is largely for front element protection (far too many children!!) and circular polariser size. In some of the treads I have read, people recommend "thin"?? filters or larger dia.

Your thoughts please

Cheers

Mark

akiwi
13th of December 2006 (Wed), 01:55
for a 10-22 you will need a very thin filter otherwise you will see it in the corners. I don't use uv filters any longer unless I am photographing something with flying stones sand or mud where you need the physical protection. They definitely cause too much glare.

Mark Vuleta

Thanks Peter
I think that in my situation, some form of protection is warrented. I have not physically seen the 10-20 but I believe that the lens hood is quite short (as it needs to be for the wideish angle. 82mm would be the next size up, possible to us an adaptor ring (say from Cokin system??) Not sure, may just wait until I pick it up but that will be about 3.30 pm on Saturday 23rd Dec in Christchuch, doesn't leave a lot of time prior to christmas to make up my mind.

I have put everything on hold for a while till I get my backlog processed, and a Christmas calendar for family and friends done. Means sorting through the 20000 photos or so that I have taken this year.
Today I was off work with the flu I think. Slept most of the day.

Get better and get posting
I will be picking yor brains soon I need a proofer
