Oh the wonders of a Mortgage,
Congrats and commiserations Matt, and good luck with the flat mates :)
Has anyone got any experience with shipping costs from over seas?
I just had a look at buying a Benbo 2 tripod from B&H, and they want US$99 just for the postage!

Heck, house prices of today. You'd think you have a helipad with that price.
Sadly, our own valuation has gone up to $460+ i think, couple houses nearby sold for around $440-465 a year ago, so I'm sure one in the neighbourhood will push $500K.

Does US$99 for a 4kg tripod through UPS sound reasonable though?
One thing about buying land in Auckland, its very hard to lose money on it.
The House however is another matter, its very easy to let it fall down around you.
Fortunately if you find a solid one, with a really bad decorating job, its no to hard to add a little value to it.
Not to hard on the wallet that is, its much harder on the body.

So you're telling me the average wage continues to rise at 20% every 3 years?
I blame real estate agents for continually pushing up the sales.. Recently saw an article, about the commission they're charging. I'm definately look at real estate photography, as they seem to have money to blow around.
Last time I saw wages increased 2-5% a year depending on area you're in.
I've only had 326% increase in 4 years due to change in jobs...

Pay rises...I've heard of these things. Seems to be 'management' that automatically get them while the real workers have to go cap in hand and ask for one.

MattL: Congrats & commiserations!!! Give it a couple of years and your net worth will allow you to get another investment property, then let other people's money work for you. I'vve had a former colleague start when she was your age... she now owns 21 properties!
Pay raises... they don't even cover the bloody inflation rate! PAYE + ACC + Inflation + 12.5% on everything we purchase is highway robbery. No wonder they small time crooks who break into our houses just get their knuckles slapped - they aren't stealing as much!

Either that or one finds themselves being pirated and being given raises along the way. Besides, according to the studies, working smartly, and building your network will get you into more lucrative paying jobs.

I do agree. I just hate getting slapped with some 42% (39+% plus another 2.5% for ACC,) then have to pay 12.5% GST... I'm glad I am contracting at my new job -- I hopefully will be paying less!

It's the same everywhere in the world. Here in Germany it's the same. I have to grovvel for a pay rise. I also find it unfair. I am not a good business man & cannot barter as hard as some and therefore have the feeling I could be earning more. In a way it would be nice if all wages were visible so you could see who was being paid too much & who too little. One of the workers in my team didn't get a pay rise in 6 years as she was too shy to ask for one. I had to do it for her.
Over the last couple of years it has become a little better I must admit.

Or better yet you can just use interflora = www.fleurop.com (http://www.fleurop.com). They are represented all around the world (Including the above mentioned shop).

Just got back from some Christmas shopping.
Just to let people know, Camera House, now have $10 Gold member card, you pay that, then get 12x8" prints for just $5 each.. And various other sizes.
Even more, they said 20min wait, but I was talking to the sales person for 5min, and before we had finished talking, my photos were printed, and in high quality matte. :)
Tony: I think it's cropped too tightly, should generally show more below the face, rather than blackness of the hair above. Like more neckline.
I hope it's a crop... Otherwise it won't be too usable when printed from a shop, where even more is cropped. Anyway, nice and sharp though and good exposure. :)

Nice photo Tony. Two suggestions to improve: more detail in the hair, and the eyes could be a little more open - not that you can do much about that. If you have the CS2 beta and shot RAW the fill light might pull a little detail out of the hair.

The one below the Master bedroom is about 6x4 mtr the garage is bigger again but more of a boys workshop than a studio for fine models.
Mind you the studio inside could also be used as a room for the mother in-law latter

The main thing you will need is length. (Ok width too).
For full body photos at 6m you will need to go down to 30mm or so if you want the model a bit away from the BG. I an never happy with photos at this focal distance. Mostly they look unsharp. (Problem with my lens?) But also they are normally a bit unflattering. If the garage is longer you could do it up to look nice. Often you can use the space between rafters for hair lights etc.
As for gut decisions. My gut tells me that I need a new camera and at least 1 new lens (e.g. 17-40) but my logic is stronger & sais I can't afford it. (I guess that's combuined with the gut feeling that my wife would have my guts for garters if I bought some new gear before I have finnished paying off my new laptop) I have made a rule that all new photo related purchases are paid for from photo earnings.

Looks like it was a quite day here in GKPE land :)
I spent the day driving to Wellington, which wasn't a bad drive, glad I wasn't heading North though, the traffic out of Wellington was very heavy.

Sorry Simon, Kirst just left a few minutes ago. I refrain from the PC during that time. She's gone home for the night, then will be over from lunchtime tomorrow, and going to Te Puke lunchtime Monday....
Kirst however isn't working on Wed/Thurs coming up, so maybe after the weekend, I can make sure she has the stuff, and can meet her there then?

Some nice work there Tony. You are improving with each shoot, so keep going, and Sandra will see the money soon. Looking at your Galleries my only comment is that the photos you have posted in G&N (Yes I did take a peek in there...) are not the best ones. Not that I am an expert at this type of thing:oops:

Well, no camera gear for me for Christmas, but almost as good, I got a severe telling off! I have been told by my wifes aunt and uncle, in no uncertain terms that in future I WILL make all camera gear purchases through them at wholesale prices. (they are reps for canon, auckland camera are their customers, so the price they get is better than AC.) I have always avoided buying through them because I didn't want to take advantage of them, but I don't want to get a telling off again do I. I told them I will give them a call next year after bonus time if the 40D is out, and a worthwhile upgrade.
Had a play with a lensbaby 3G as well, which was interesting, and frustrating!

Owharoa falls -
there's a road off the southern side (LHS coming from TGA...) park about 150m up the road and the track to the falls is on your right.
see:
http://tour.thepeninsula.co.nz/karangahake.htm
and:
http://karangahakegorge.co.nz/mainpage.html
we parked initially at #4 and wandered around Victoria Battery, then drove west & up to the falls. Then we drove on to carpark across the road from #2 and did the big scenic loop thru the tunnel.

Tony, you're getting better. I see a few things that make me think amateur not professional:
- Your website front page isn't centered in firefox.
- Some images in the gallery are dull because they appear to have the incorrect color profile assigned. When "alsiha009.jpg" is assigned the adobe RGB profile it looks like you probably intended. You have to convert everything to sRgb before it goes on the web, and if you don't understand color management you have to work entirely in sRgb. btw you should never use the "assign profile" command unless you understand what it does.
- Clicking on the arrows when viewing the alisha pages takes me to a different model, instead of the next image of her. Damned annoying so I gave up. Plus the arrows are too small.
Hope those observations help you out.

Cheers Tim. The gallerys are done in jalbum so its basically defaults.
How whould you correct the firefox center issue? I will get off my as and remember to save as sRGB.

Hey everyone.
What a long good weekend. Good to have family time.
Kirst and I went to Te Puke to see her family, Christmas day, had some dinner, stayed the night at one of her friends place from her growing up town... ;)
And then went to the Mount the following day for some quick shopping - Was rather toasty, and probably could have just run down into the water for a swim!
Didn't realise Tony was out that way, we went through the gorge on the way there, and back through Matamata on the way back.

Wazza thats where I grew up. A local surfy boy. Started working in Katikati then in my 20's Te Puke. A lot of the area has changed so much yet other parts remain unchanged.
I went Katikati way for the first time in 10yrs. But hell would need to freeze over before I would consider moving back. Way to many memorys many I would rather forget.
I guess thats why I love Auckland...no bad memorys.

Not centered in Opera either.
You need a "p align=center" "/p" encapsulating the first table.

QC2 were good at noise reduction, but were absolutely horrible at reproducing music, no way i'd listen to music on them except on a plane. The QC3 are meant to be quite a bit better.

I would expect a competant web designer to charge $50/hr or more. I'd keep at it yourself. Centering that home page is necessary because it looks stupid as it is and takes 10 seconds. Also I don't like the thumbnails B&W, or the JAlbum skin you use.
