Hey I'm thinking of making my first edition to gear. What's a good first Lens to buy for a 350D?.. All I have is the standard cannon 18-55mm lens that comes with the kit.

Suggestions?

They say its worth its weight in gold. I think the 70-200 IS is about 3kg..

According to http://goldprice.org/gold-price-new-zealand.html gold is worth about 28,000 per kilo, so its worth about 84,000. Not bad for a $3,000 lens.

Yeah I wasn't sure aye, but I was thinking 'isn't the fact that I have a 350D a clue that I can't afford that'.

I still haven't found my niche yet, I photograph everything but mostly Landscapes, Macro and conceptual stuff. I have a small gallery HERE (http://cyborgdeathninja.deviantart.com/gallery/).

Get the 70-200 F4. Its sharp and light. I ownd 1 once and it was that good someone here wanted to buy it off me  Had to replace it so went for the 70-200 F2.8 non IS

The last model shoot I had outdoors the 70-200 was the only lens I used.

I believe a few own the Sigma 70-200 F2.8. Sigma works well on Cropped cameras would not recommend for FF i.e 5D 1Ds

These lenses are still too expensive for me, and seen as I'm still very much an amateur I can't justify spending over 1k. I'm looking for something around $500 (new or 2nd hand) that would be good for landscapes and/or macro.

Am I correct in thinking that the angle of view for a SLR is different for a dSLR? So where 15mm would be 180degrees for a SLR what would be 180degrees on a dSLR? I'm pretty sure I have this all wrong but I'm a bit confuddled.

Educate me...

Picturesports

Add something like 16% (if my brain works this early) on DSLRs except the 5D. So a 100mm lens on a DSLR is a 116mm lens.

Field of view / crop factor depends on the dslr model - 'ferinstance Tony's 5D is "full frame" so uses glass in exactly the same manner as a 35mm slr. My 20D has a "crop factor" of 1.6 so for the same lens, would produce pictures with the impression of being cropped, when compared to the same picture when taken with a 5D or slr. With my 20D I'd need something like a 9mm (lens!) to get a similar shot to a 15mm on a slr or a 5D.
This question seems to get folks on the main board all heated and righteous for some reason - you could ask it there as well & we could have a good laugh at some of the replies! ;)

Befuddled it is!

A lens on a film SLR camera is designed to project it's round image onto a rectangular piece of 35mm film. DSLRs have a much smaller sensor. So it receives only part of the total image projected. In effect it is cropped.

The field of view (FOV) is therefore much less than that lens would give onto 35mm. In the lower Canon DSLRs, you need to divide the focal length by 1.6 to get the same FOV as a film SLR.

So, when a film photographer says 80mm, the digital photographer says 50mm.

The macro 100mm Canon lens is often used for portraiture - on film. At an event, I find that at an effective 160mm the photographer is too far away from the subject - someone walks between, the attention of the subject is gone, etc. (To get the same FOV, the photographer has to walk back.) The 60mm Macro at 96mm equivalent FOV is a nearer match

The kit lens is not bad for landscapes actually. Wide enough most of the time, and the image quality is pretty good stopped down, which is how you use it for landscapes. That's why I kept using it for so long.

If you are lucky, and a bit patient, you can pick a bargin on trademe. I got my mint Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for $700, which I still smile about. But those sort of deals are pretty rare.

The 17-55 would be one of the contenders for my 3rd... But something in me wants a 10mm!

The 17-55 would definately be one of my 3 lenses on an aps-c camera, while the kit lens was fine for landscapes, the 17-55 is a much better all round lens. It is usefull in a much wider variety of circumstances. But 10mm is cool! Actually if money was no oblect I would swap my 70-200 for the Canon IS one and keep my 10-20, and 17-55. But if I was allowed 4 lenses I would add a fast prime (say the 35L or the Sigma 30, I have found the 50 too long on the occasions I have used it indoors), or a 100mm Macro.

News in from the "great service" department -
I visited AK Camera on Wednesday with Tony to look at tripod's. After much umming & ahhing on my part the decision to go with the heavier, more expensive option (055prob / 3021bpro) was chosen. After getting home (doh!) happened, as you do, to come across other suppliers pricing - agast to find same product $50 cheaper elsewhere!
I fired Ak Camera off an e-mail with my thoughts at the time - polite but to the point, and wouldn't you know it, back they come with not only an apology for getting it wrong ( their ticketed price too high), but an offer to credit my bank account with the difference.
Stand up & take a bow, Ak Camera. Fabulous to see service such as this where not only willing to admit a mistake has happened, but happy to put something right.

I forsee a 488 ballhead in my new years' shopping cart... :-)

Tony, bit of CC for this shot : http://www.tonysearle.co.nz/images/Glamour/album/Outdoor%20Glamour/slides/Anelma006.html

Notice the tree growing out of her head? If you took a step to the right, then she would have green behind instead of a branch out of her. (:S) either that or much much shallower DOF.. or perhaps a bit of both.

There are some good shots in there, I particularly like :

Did the Opotiki Rodeo today. The 5 hours travel was worth it, giving great action shots. One saddlebronc horse stepped on its reins and snapped it's neck. Sad to see, and sadder to see it dragged off by rope behind a tractor.

There's a rodeo in Warkworth tomorrow. I'd recommend it as a photoshoot.

One thing I learned at the Rodeo - the latest CF card, which tested ok, is in fact fake, and seriously impairs performance.

I have just used the 30D on Manual, Slow Continuous, and shuttered to buffer-full and timed to completion of writing.

Genuine Sandisk Extreme III 2 GB - 23 shots in 16.5 seconds - 0.7 seconds per shot.

Fake ditto - 11 shots in 67.5 seconds - 6.1 seconds per shot.

In event photography that is just unusable. The fake was from a source that has been reliable for a couple of years. Paid the going USA price for the goods.

Ah, well - the 300D user will be pleased to get it. The camera is slower than the fake card.

You just have to think faster Tony :p

You just have to keep thinking so hard about what your doing, that eventually it becomes intuitive, then you can pay more attention to things like the light and exposure, while you instinctively keep trees from growing out of peoples heads.

And, your people PP skills are clearly a behind your landscape PP skills.

I need some books on PP with Skin and woman..or I need to read more.

Im not a quick thinker rather I refect thus landscape suit me better. I cant help but love woman, their shapes and curves. And their eyes. Favorite outfit has to be lingerie. You can tell a lot about a woman by her lingerie.

Then you have to learn to control and direct the model, work with her to get the look, not try and keep up with her. If she's moving to fast, then she needs to slow down.

AND, don't get hung up focusing you eye on the model, look at the whole frame, look at everything in it.
Iv gotten in to the habbit of making my eyes to a tour around the frame to look at all aspects of it, not just the subject I want to shoot.
The background is just as important as the main subject.

Just got around to downloading my Christmas day photos (yep first time I have touched the camera since a week ago!) And amoung the normal kids running around with water pistols shots I found this one that I took while experimenting with a lens baby 3G. It's weird how sometimes I can do everything wrong (focus is bad, exposure is way off etc) and still end up with an image that really does something for me.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a310/scotttnz/IMG_2233.jpg

I'm not sure what it is I like about it, but it is a cool abstract, close up of my daughter, that for some strange reason I find rather appealing.
