PS thats it John now you have got me out to prove you wrong. I will give you something to make you go WOW
Tony - re-read what I posted. There is no need to prove me wrong because I didn't say anything. All I said is that your glamour photography is going to go the way your landscape photography is. ... I think I need to say things simpler.:p
yea that photo doesn't make go wow.

Hey Tony, can you recommend any good spots for Photography or Fishing around Mt Maunganui? I'm heading down there tommorow for a week.
Give me a call if you wish; I'm in the phonebook. It'd be great to have a chat. I could suggest some photo locations.

Well that was a loooonnngggg weekend...

That's a great shot. How long did it take to get it? I wouldn't expect noticeable noise in brightly-lit areas at 400, especially with the 100mm. But perhaps so on the 10D.

John I was pulling your leg.
I am still undecided if I will carry on after Feb 1St. All I know is photographing people is a lot of hard work.
Yesterday was a struggle finding ideas and finding the best look for the model.
Im starting to get more people wanting to use me that have been refered on by other which is great for business but what the hang do I charge?
Cant do this for nothing forever.
weka2000

Been thinking about prices. I was looking at $250 for a portfolio. That would be 1 studio shoot and 1 Outdoors shoot. Max of 10 images post processed and a copy of all images on CD.
Thoughts, ideas and comments.
I have heard that the "pro" guys charge between $500-$1000 based on what different models have said.
lil_miss
2nd of January 2007 (Tue), 15:45
I think that would be a great starting point - so at least you're getting something out of it... you'll soon find out if thats too much or too less by the amount of people that do or don't come to you for photos :)

Spoke to 1 model who would be more than happy to pay that.

then perhaps you should charge more. remember it's easer to drop prices than it is to raise prices.

I think the price is fair. Considering my experence. It is better to make $100 from 10 people than $1000 from 1 person. You get 10 people who then tell 10 more which becomes $10,000  Which means 1DsMK2
Which is one of my goals for 2007. Will see what canon do in March at Vagus
Moppie
2nd of January 2007 (Tue), 18:00
I would work on $1,000 a day being a fair price for an average photographer.
Your not an average photographer, but you lack some experience, so somewhere between 250 and 500 sounds reasonable.
Then, as your experience grows start raising the price.
Aim to be charging $1,000 by the end of the year, and double that by the end of next year.

I see no point in been Greedy. Better to have a strong client base first. Word of mouth as advertising.
Moppie
2nd of January 2007 (Tue), 19:02
Its not about being greedy, its about making money, which is the whole point of being in business. Or at least I thought thats what it was :)
Work out how long you spend prepping for the shoot, doing the shoot, post proccessing the shoot, add in the time it took you to find the model, transport costs, and your gear costs.
If you charge $250 per session, how much does that work out per hour for you? Don't forget at some point you will have to start paying Tax on the earnings, (you can call it hobby, and be tax free up to a certain point), and then you also have to consider GST, insurance, ACC levys etc etc etc.
Its no good trying to do it professionally if you can't think of it as a business :)

So wahts everyone upto for new years?
Bula Vinaka!
Kirst and I spent a wonderful 5 nights in Fiji..
Many great photos... Will have to share just a few within the week. Many portfolio worthy images, both from the wedding, champagne breakfast next day, and simple landscapes, and even wildlife, such as snakes and lizards Kirst was handling yesterday. Such a long day, after leaving the resort at 3:30am, driving a fair distance, flying 3 hours, driving almost an hour back to the deep of West Auckland at lunchtime..
I just read the past 10 or so pages, but didn't find too much interesting :p
Of course there is, but too much to comment on.

I know this is completely off the subject of photography but does anyone know anything about the Creative Xmod http://tinyurl.com/ewrmg
I'm very interested in this as it is a portable sound card which can be used for so much more. Retailing at $80US it is reasonably cheap as well.
Just wondering if anyone has used one of these and if it is worth it.

Yip, you can't make something from nothing.
Once you've encoded an MP3, you can't magicaly decode it and add back in all the missing frequencys and data.

Hi all, Merry Christmas and Happy new year.
I'm back from Austria. We had a white Christmas, but there wasn't much snow. Actually it didn't snow the entire time I was there untill yesterday afternoon and last night when it started dumping snow making the drive home exciting.
Work now for 3 days then back to pick up my family.
I'll use the opportunity to set up a shoot tomorrow night at home with one of my collegues. She is a body builder! See how it goes.

I don't know your reason for buying this card but I can tell you from a musicians point of view creative make terrible products. Also creative have bad customer support, often have backward technology, and their soundcards have huge amounts of line noise. I'd suggest M-Audio as an alternative.
As far as their "Experience your MP3 music beyond studio quality" statement goes they're riding the vagueness of the word quality. While the word suggests the quality of outputted sound they'll most likely be meaning sample quality, and while their sample quality maybe upped with magical mystery data before DA conversion, the outputted sound of an mp3 will be without a single shadow of doubt will be worse than CD. It's the old "MegaBass 3million watts PMPO" nonsense reissued in another ridiculous way. A good sound card should not affect the quality of audio whether it be good or bad.
And how funny is it when they use intangible words like 'experience' on an axis of a graph:

Well took my tribe up to Karamatura track yesterday went as far as the pass to Tom Thumb track. Went swimming talk about bloody cold. Just jumped in...oh that rush of the cold water hitting. I havnt done that for years. Its good somethimes to feel alive.
Well looks like my "Glamour" is taking off. I have referals comming out of the woodwork as well as all the others comming back for more and the other e-mails getting replyed now people are back from thier break...... I need a rest
I got a wonderfull e-mail the other day
" I enjoyed the photoshoot. I thought you were very down to earth and friendly. You were on time and dressed tidy.
I loved that you were keen to take lots of photos and I thought it was good when you stopped every now and then to show me the photos and we could make little changes and ended up getting some HOT photos
Its difficult for young girls to get into this industry because we are hammered about dodgy/weird photographers so it was cool to meet a guy who likes photography.
I have given your website to about 10 other girls I know who are interested in photoshoots and told them to check out your website if they are keen."
Even Sandra was impressed

I wouldn't say they have bad customer support. I have numerous Creative products including a Zen... It broke down a couple of months ago so I took it in. They didn't even ask what was wrong with it and they just replaced it.

Im sure you've seen his work in the G&N forum, you should ask him about how he figured his prices.
Package 1 is probably less than an hour of his time, done in an already prepared studio.
Model comes in, does 3 basic poses, he takes 10 photos, does some basic action based PP, then sells them another $90 worth of prints.
They then come back for one of the higher priced more involved packages.
Remember also that he has the resources and equipment already set up, and in place. All he has to do is show up and take a couple of photos, something he does everyday.
Its only when you get to Package 4, that you see an all day rate. And remember thats in Ausie dollars, and more than likely discounted because he's relying on the models coming back for more work, and also telling all their friends.
Don't get caught charging $200 for a whole days worth of traveling, setting up and then shooting, and then another days worth of PP. You can make more money than that pumping gas.

I understand what you are saying about an all day shoot. Mind you after my holidays I wont have much time. So it would be 3 hrs most for a trip out to the west coast.

For a company as big as creative replacing gear is not a problem, it's when it comes to resolving problems that they are bad. I brought a SB soundcard a few years back and found that they had replaced their ASIO drivers to an older sort making them virtually incompatible with Logic (one of the most professional studio tools in the business). They left lots of people in the lurch with cards that could not do what they claimed they could, instead of rectifying the situation they said support for this product has been discontinued,.. basically they did the equivalent of holding their hands over their ears and saying "la la la I'm not listening".
As far a line noise goes, you may not hear it but I can assure you it's there.

Fair enough... but I guess it just the people you deal with at creative... if you talk to the guys at world HQ or the creative suppliers here in NZ the NZ has the better service.
as for the sound card I picked this up just a few weeks ago. And I can assure you that even at full volume not even the slightest noise is noticeable using this card... must be your speakers. (or maybe I'm going deaf, LOL )

Tbh I haven't had much to do with Creative since previous experiences so maybe they've cleaned up their act with line noise and alike. I use a quality 1980s solid state Preaux amp but because it's vintage it needs a good clean so admittedly it's producing a bit of noise. :P

have to clean up the house before the wife & kiddies arrive back including pulling down the studio gear & putting the furniture back in the living room. :(
Wouldn't a dedicated studio be nice!

Well Feb the 1st is going to be a close call as to carrying on with Glamour. My e-mail is getting to much, Im tired and once im back at work I will have very little time.
I had more fun last night with our little mini GKPE than I do with Glamour. I love landscapes they are so relaxing, people are hard work and it dosnt finish after the shoot is over.
What have I discovered so far... Well there is a tonne of oppotunity out there. A bit of effort and a few shoots and you are on your way.
I guess what worrys me the most is that once money gets involved it becomes a chore rather than something you love to do.
Sandra and I had coffee and I was saying for me it is the challange of doing something, proving you can do it. Bit like $3000 prime lens. How often would you really use them. I guess I am a simple country boy at heart that just loves the outdoors and the quite space to be alone with my own thoughts.

Perhaps you could set yourself a limit - of say 1 or 2 every 2-3 weeks.. anything after that you have to decline?
akiwi
4th of January 2007 (Thu), 19:26
Tony.. I know exactly what you are talking about. I limit myself to maximum 1 glamour shoot a week. better is one every 2 weeks otherwise I find I get overloaded. I do it as I love it. I enjoy working with people, my main problem is coming up with ideas and nice looking poses. However the more I do, the easier it gets.
I make a little on the side through glamour, but do quite well selling stock photos. That paays for all my photo equipment at the moment.
I'm off to sleep.

Hello all, I just discovered this site. I'm a kiwi married to an American and living in New York. We're finally making the leap to digital SLR, having used an A1 and a film Rebel for the last 15 years or so, although we have an S230 which we have used more often that film recently. We have a 30D on the way, which should be here by Saturday, so we're looking forward to learning how to use it. I can see a lot of visits to the site over the coming months!
Also can't wait to our next trip to NZ. We're biking the Central Otago rail trail so hopefully we'll get some good shots there. Roll on Feb 21st! :D
Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome. I grew up in erm... Invercargill. Haven't lived there for a long time though. Lived in Dunedin, Queenstown, Chch and Auckland at various times. My folks live in Alexandra now.
The 30D is coming from abesofmaine.com The best deal I could find on the web. B&H is a great store for browsing, but I have to buy these things outside New York state to avoid paying NY sales tax ;)
I will visit the other site, thanks for the recommendation.

The Fluro vest is purely there for saftey ... isn't it.
I got conveniently directed to the press box at an event last year just by waving my white lens around a bit. My 2 children where also allowed in. My wife wasn't happy though as she had to try to see between all the people who were there before us, and she's short. Next time I'll put a notebook & pencli in my camera bag .. or a microphone with a big foam thingy on it & stick that in her hand.;)

And you won't have any trouble finding work after leaving the Evil Dark Side.
A friend recently moved to Ausie, and was worried about getting work. As soon as they saw EDS on his resume, a couple of people started falling over themselves to hire him. He's now contracting and making considerably more money than he was here.
