Hmmm, I believe Iv been well and truly suckered.

Amanda on the other hand has had 5 weeks of Holiday in the last 3 months.
During that time she's been to Bali and Rotorua, and done precisely nothing on the house............

Hmmmmmmm, but! She doesn't own a 30D, with lenses covering 17-300mm :D :D :D :D

......Holiday....Rotorua

Techinically, I don't think Rotorua counts as a holiday does it? :p

I'm sending the 1D back to base for a check up  . Reading a post in the equipment section, some guy has problems with banding at high ISO. I went back and looked closer at some images and there is definately something fishy going on. Even at 400 I can see what I think is banding. Of course I may be paranoid and trying to find a problem when there may not be one, but better to be happy than frustrated. I thought it only happened when heavily underexposed images were recovered too far but some of mine aren't underexposed and it's there. We'll see what Mr Canon (or Mrs Canon for that matter) have to say.

Howdy folks. I have never seen a thread this long in my life. Surely this ranks as one of NZ's undiscovered treasures. It should be in Te Papa...

Anyway, I'm a (very) amateur photographer from Grey Lynn, Auckland. I just made the jump to digital, and have a 400D with EF 28-135mm IS and EFS 10-22mm lenses. I am saving for the 100mm macro next.

Here are three shots from locations you may recognise:

Howdy neighbour! welcome aboard - you're right about the undiscovered treasure bit, there's probably a whole bunch of astronomers (& astrologers) feavourishly trying to discover the cause of a large black hole into which a number of Kiwi's pour time & money into!!

p.s. before you scrub yer sensor again, come and see me - I've got a sensor filter (ex 20D but essentially the same) you can have a go at seeing how easy it is to scratch. See link in my sig. ;)

lets just say you are getting other photographers to judge your work. which in itself I think is a bad idea. a photographer is going to find the little bits that are wrong with a photo. Which is based on what the photographer would include or exclude in the photo.

If you really wont to know if you have that wow factor, print out a photo that you like, and show it to a non photographer and then see the type of response you get. I don't consider myself a great photograher by any means but people still like my work.

Actualy I'm quite the Anti-Materailist/Consumerist.

But, if you going to be a proffesional photographer then you have to look at it like a bussiness.
Even if your not going to be a Pro, and just get some work on the side, if that work is going to be for a Company, then you have to treat them accordinly and conduct yourself in a similar fashion.
That means don't let them use you to get some good quality photos which would have cost tens time more else where.

So you have an end customer that is very pleased with your work, and is now prepared to pay for it, but you don't think thier judgement if of a high enough standard yet, so you won't charge them?
(we're talking about your work here, just your percpetion of other peoples perceptions of your work).
For me, if I was photographing models, then I would consider thier opinion to be the one that matter about how good I am.
After all its them, not us, who are the end users of your photographs.

I do however understand your objections, you have said several times this is a stepping stone to bigger things.
Its relativly clear your not interested in being a model photographer, your are instead aiming to be a fine art photographer. One whos prefered subjects are women and nature, preferably together.
May I suggest a change in tack to make reaching your end goal a little easier?
Move away from comercial model photography (which is what you are getting into), and move more towards fine art work.
Join NZIPP, and NZPS, and start looking for fine art models, or see if the ones you have are more interested in doing some fine art work.
Then work on taking some fine art shots.
Do several along a similar theme, and then start approaching gallerys and try to get some public showings.
Also get in contact with some publishing companys etc, see what sort of market there is for fine art photography in NZ.
I know its there, my Uncle is starting to get quite well known for his work.

You have established an ablity to get noticed, and make contact with the right people.
Prehaps you need to put that into a different direction?

Weka, that one's great too, but i'd tone down the sky a little.

I went to order an AMD X2 4200+ CPU today and nowhere has then in stock, the distributed has stopped selling them! One place can get me a 4600 is all, and trademe has a couple. Annoying, no way i'm replacing a motherboard, RAM, and CPU for a little upgrade, this machine (AMD 3200+) is still pretty good, just want dual core for bridge.

hmm, first thought was WOW. What struck me when I first saw it was the contrast between the sky and the ground. I like it.

and I am not just saying that either.

however looking closer, it would be nicer to have the horizon straighter, something isn't quite right with the sky, so perhaps toning down the sky would help with that.

I like how everything is leading to a point that is off centre. if you follow the line of the clouds, the rock face and the sand they all lead to the same place. perhaps something should be there, but sometimes you don't have to either. with out anyone there it seems like it's far away and moody.

Sadly, none of the options are any good.

You either go with Xtra, and get average service all over, or get one of the other companies who still have to go through xtra, but offer a service thats really good in one area, but crap in all the others.
Of course you could spend lots of money every month and get one of Xtra bussiness conections. Although that could be a challange if you have pay a mortgage as well :)

To someone with no money, living in Russia 20 years ago, a Lada is a great car.
Expensive cars are judged by ignorant and opinionated journalists, people like Jeremy Clarkson who can't really drive very well, and don't actualy know anything about what makes the car perform the way it does. Society lets them judge cars because we find them entertaining, not because they know what they are talking about.

But most cars are judged by the average consumer, the people who actualy go out and buy them, and drive them everyday.
Based on that the worlds greatest cars the Toyota Corrolla and the Honda Civic.
I'd have to disagree with you there. While it is the the 'average consumer' that judges the cars this does not mean that their opinions are in anyway educated and are in anyway meritable or accurate. This becomes quite apparent when we look at the vast majority of 'average consumers' which plague the streets of Auckland in pseudo off road vehicles which were brought without the slightest intention of touching a single blade of grass. These people buy these cars thinking the are big and safe when the actual reality is that they are danger to themselves and others. The average motoring consumers are under educated and I would never trust a single word of their motoring advice,.. New Zealand breeds a whole new type of average motoring consumers which are (for lack of a better expression) motoring retarded.

While journalists like Jeremy Clarkson may not be the most gifted drivers they have educated opinions of cars which the average consumer does not. Their life and income is devoted to cars and their driving experience far exceeds most 'average consumers'. Also part of being a motoring journalist involves seeking the answers from average consumers where their driving experience is not adequate, for example seeking experience from couriers when reviewing a Ford Transit. The reason why 'society lets them judge cars' is not 'because we find them entertaining' but because of two reasons; Time and Money. Not every average consumer has the time to test every car they have the option of buying nor can they afford to, instead we look to the services that a motor journalist experienced position offers. It is quite likely that none of us will ever drive a Zonda or a Koenigsegg and in this case we can only rely on a motor journalists opinion.

And I should remind you that not all motor journalists are average drivers. Tiff Needell is an excellent example of a motor journalist who can drive. I remember seeing him setting impressive lap times test driving the Ferrari Enzo, and it goes without saying that his times would have been more impressive had he not being so concerned about crashing one of the most expensive cars in the world.

You are right about one thing however and I suspect it was the point you where intending to make; opinions are relative.

/End Rant.

You are right about one thing however and I suspect it was the point you where intending to make; opinions are relative.

More specificity what is "good" or "great" about something is always an opinion, which, is always relative :)

From the point of view of a Car Manufacturer, cars are made in order to make money. In order to make money they have to sell, so as far as the manufacturers are concerned the greatest judges of cars are the people who buy them :)

Of course from a more passionate view point, the average consumer is nothing more than an uneducated dolt, who freely submits them selves to being victims of Marketing campaigns. Hence they fall for thinly disguised exercisers in cost cutting, buying modern cars that look pretty on the surface, but have actually regressed back 20 years when you examine the engineering underneath.

There are plenty of very good motoring journalists, many of which are very good drivers. Tiff Needle is an excellent example.
Unfortunately objective reviews make for boring TV, hence we get stuck with dick heads like Clarkson.

Of course all of this chat is better suited to a car forum :)
Besides, I got over the whole "my car is better than you car" crap when I bought a Honda. There simple is nothing better :p

I would like to point out that Tiff is a better driver than Clarkson and would trust his review more than clarkson. However clarkson is funner.
Quoted for truth.

Tbh I think Clarkson is one of the best journalists around,.. yes he is very unjustly opinionated but he does is job very well. His books often have me laughing out loud.

Of course whether Clarkson is "good" or "great" is a matter of opinion which leads us back to your original point of which I agree with whole heartedly ;)

I need to get a new car this year. I have never heard of Tiff Needle or Clarkson!
When I buy a car I choose based on:
1. What I need. (Better said what I think I need or try to convince myself I need)
2. How it looks.
3. What it costs.
4. That inexplainable individual brand image perception.
5. What I read / hear.

Point 1 stays at the top.
2, 3 & 4 are all interchangeable.
And point 5 can affect the position of point 4.

There are of course other points like.. What I am allowed, & what is available.

If a journalists opinion is to affect my decision, then it is only when this car is already in my short list.

I would think clarkson doesn't get much air time on German tv, he seems to make a lot of cracks about how Germany didn't win WW2. Of course we are glad that they didn't but he doesn't know when to let it go.

You clearly have never heard of the mythological beast called the 1988 Toyota Corona. My personal beast has 420,000km under its arm and it's as handsome and determined as the day I bequeathed him.

Maybe you car experts can help me choose a car then.
I need a station wagen. (Family)
It needs to be Diesel.
I would like 4WD as my parents in law live in the mountains in Austria & I hate constantly having to put chains on & off. Also my brother in law has built a hut up on a mountain where the road is not very street car friendly.
I drive a lot on Autobahns. (100 km / day)
Consumption is important.
It can't be too expensive as it is a company car & I have to pay tax based on the price:

What do you think would fit my requirements.
I have a particular car on my short list (Not released yet) I'll mention that later.

No bookings for that weekend yet, i'll be around :)

Hey as you all know i just bought a house.. so now im trying to work out who to go with for broadband. Any suggestions? I'm looking for no speed limits up or down, 20-30gig traffic with free national. APE peering preferred.

Any ideas? I'm stuck.. none of my options seem too good :(

Xtra leads the way because they're a monopoly.

Don't go with Xtra, they are the devil.

Oooh. I need to clean my keyboard.
My neighbour had a tuned RS4. He took me for a drive on the autobahn. I was quite impressed when he changed into 6th gear at 240 kmh and accelerated to nearly 260 before we had to break due to traffic.
Hmm The RS6 would have problems in snow & offroad as it is too low & is too thirsty. A litre super here costs nearly $3!! so consumption also plays a role.
Oh, & I think I will be selling my camping bus in favour of a carivan as the taxes for that have also gone through the roof this year.

So any other suggestions? Show mw photos so we can keep this thread marginally photo related.

Got my B&H catalogue today. Must have got lost in the post.

I just got an e-mail from a friend of mine from here in Germany saying he is in Auckland. He takes outstanding landscape photographs. Only problem is he has a camera with one of those yellow & black straps that begin with N!!!
Any chance he can join you guys on a couple of outings? His name is Uwe Steger. You can check out some of his pictures Here at Fotocommunity (http://www.fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/mypics/766601)
Oops!! I just worked out that the Uwe in New Zealand is another one. He isn't a photographer. I used him as a model once. http://www.fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/mypics/476799/display/6143012. He is a Carpenter. Anyone looking for some carpentry work?

Yes landscapes are more of who I am. I notice far more about a landscape than I do a model. Posture etc is not a strong point

Landscapes 90% Glamour 10%

Nothing good comes easy

If you want to be great at something you first need to be naturally good at it.
We all have built in talents it is part of who we are.

I grew up in the country as a small boy then by the beach untill 25ish spent 20 yrs working outside in the elements, have always loved nature and the outdoors
so naturally I would be good at seeing a landscape and knowing how it works and whats going on. (now I need to learn to compose what I see)

People on the other hand....... I am a loner I prefer to be by myself rather than with others. I have zero tolerance for people. So with that attitude and outlook and a personality that gets peoples backs up I struggle. I dont understand people nor do I want to, basically I dont care about the rest of the planet. People frustrate me. Always have always will. So dealing with models does not come easy.

So naturally I am not going to make a great "People" photographer unless I have a major attitude adjustment (like that would happen). I have to accept that while I will never make a fine art photographer I can still enjoy the works of others as I do with Music (cant sing play or have a musical note in my body).

The itch is stratched. Now to become great at what I am naturally good at.

PS Im having a day from hell (thanks to people) thus the mood.

Hey Tony.. Don't despair. I'm also crap at judging / understanding people, but it is an area in photography I thoroughly doing. I definitley have little or no natural tallent there. I have seen works from other people with less experience & equipement than I have that just blow me away, but I enjoy it. It is fun, and I love being able to please people with results I get. Even if I am not happy, they an amatures are usually over the moon. With each shoot I get better (Or make new mistakes and hopefully learn from them).
Just take it one step at a time, & try to enjoy it. Maybe don't rush into it too fast. Take your time.
I wish we where closer.. we could do a couple of shoots together & maybe learn from each other.

Also, it is not that good, in my opinion, to promote a product that still doesn't have a straight install mechanism - you have to install V1.5 first and then upgrade to V2. A lot of that is beyond the capabilities of a lot of people.

Most US based web sites come, these days, with the option to install and run several different versions of the Menalto Gallery software and, as it is a simple install, suits a lot of people.

If you are running a picture sharing site, eEngine still doesn't perform well in the multiple photographers/uploads area - it is still very single user.

EE, Gallery, Coppermine, they're all heavyweight and a pain to set up. JAlbum is very simple, lightweight, static pages.

awwwe - that is one cute tiger - actually we were just wondering today if they still had tigers at Orana Park - we went there when I was a kid and the roaring at feeding time was pretty impressive :)

Hi All! What's been happening? Just discharged from Middlemore Hospital where I was held hostage for 6 days... though I'm not sure if I will be sticking around since my temperature has become slightly elevated again after 24 hours straight of normal temps.

Did the do at Scott's go through?

OOh I just noticed. Page 900.
Does anyone here use Mozilla Thunderbird? If so I have a question about setting it up so I only get my mails on my PC, and my wife only gets her mails on her PC. Is that possible?

if you have separate user names then yes - if you have alias account - two names on the same account afraid not.

Hmm. I have an internet provider and they offer up to 50 e-mail addresses, so I have set up addresses for me and my wife.
I guess I need to look to see if I can create a separate login for my wife with the internet provider?

so when you set up the outlook account.. both emails address came through with the one login.. if so then yep new account for the wife .. get a Gmail account for her and have it forwarded to her outlook - or if you have a registered domain name you usually get a few emails to go with it .. and give her one of those.

Bummer! Till now it hasn't been a problem as we have both used the same computer. Now we have one each it would be nice to only get the mails addressed to me on my machine or her on hers.

No offense, but pretty average tiger pics. The 2nd is better because it's doing something.
