What shags like a tiger and winks?

Get it? OK it's a visual joke but one of my friends all time chat up lines.

Downunder, did you like India? I went for a month many moons ago and liked it so much went back for another month. Did you do Nepal? We also went on tiger safari and nearly lost our guide when he legged it because he thought he saw a tiger. Most of the time we were on elephants though. One of the party thought there was a five legged elephant, "Ah, it's a male elephant."

Here's one of my efforts for today:

Hi All! What's been happening? Just discharged from Middlemore Hospital where I was held hostage for 6 days... though I'm not sure if I will be sticking around since my temperature has become slightly elevated again after 24 hours straight of normal temps.

Did the do at Scott's go through?

Just got your PM as well, man that is scary! I hate hospitals, especially Middlemore. Hope you make a full recovery soon!

Scott postponed pending the rumored arrival of Summer, I think the two dates tabled were 10 and 17 Feb. The next GKPE is scheduled for the 10th at the moment.

Well I am about to give up the 20D for an undetermined amount of time, need to get it serviced, had that dodgy wire in the CF bay and is becoming temperamental, random back focusing, will send in the suspect lenses as well. Oh well I did survive for some time with the G3, but then I also had a film SLR.

Here's one of my efforts for today:

Glam does 100mm Macro F2.8 every so often. New they are around $950 good glass and sharp (I owned one once)
Or you could get the EF-S version 65mm I think Scott would be best to rate that lens.

Surprisingly, the new wards at Middlemore are fantastic compared to all the rumours I've heard... but yes, I too hate hospitals mainly because of the needles and scalpels.

Pete, if you need a 20D let me know -- I'm just a few minutes away from you.

PS Happy Birthday

Happy birthday man, I hope ya had a good one

Thanks guys :)

If you want to be great at something you first need to be naturally good at it.

Disagree! You just need to have drive to get better - plenty of people are naturally good at things, but don't work hard at them, so don't become great, likewise the sports world in particular is full of people who were naturally not very good but worked harder than anyone else to get to the top.

Things seem normalised now...

Glad to hear you're feeling better!

The efs 60mm Macro is a great lens. Very sharp and well built. I really liked mine, but just wasn't using it enough and traded it for my 10-20 which I use a lot more. One day I will get another macro....As much as I liked the 60, I would recommend you spend a little extra and get the canon 100mm.

OK everyone, dust off your Bigmas, there is a comet in the sky from today, brightest in any of our lifetimes so far.

Comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught)
This comet was discovered by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught on August 7 last year. He discovered the then faint comet on a photograph taken at the Siding Spring Observatory in New South Wales. On January 13, its orbit takes the comet within a distance of 25.4 million km or one sixth the distance of the Earth from the Sun.

I would agree. I have both, and use the 60mm Canon Macro for situations where the distance to subject requires a short focus - on a cliff where stepping back is no option, or as a portrait lens (equiv. FOV 96mm).

The 100mm is my usual macro lens - doesn't get too close to the subject, eg beetle. Also for product photography where the 60mm can cast a shadow as it is so close.

I also use the Canon Closeup lens 250D on the 100mm Macro for enlargement images. It's worth trying!

It is quite possible the multitreaded apps like CS and CS2 will run better in Vista due to the better thread management if you have a multicore machine.

I have a MAP subscription, they give me 10 Vista Business and 10 Office 2007 licences, plus possibly one Ultimate (they gave me one Media Centre Edition licence for XP as well as the 10 Professional licences).

Oh and before anyone asks if I give the key out and MS finds out (i.e. the PC using it has an internet connection), MS disables the whole key so none of the machines work, welcome to the new End User Licence Agreement .

BTW, MAP is Microsoft Action Pack, a mini Select Agreement/MSDN cross for IT businesses.

Yeah I figured the copy protection was going to be a lot tougher than previously. I am thinking about buying Vista Ultimate Upgrade. I don't own XP, but I do own Windows 2000 Pro which does qualify for the upgrade. It's about $510 from the unanmed distributor, and then I would have to upgrade my antivirus as well. I have a copy of Office 2007 Pro coming from Microsoft already.

I haven't really got excited about Windows and Office upgrades for a long time, but some of the stuff in this round has really got me interested. Office actually looks cool......I know.....how can office be cool? but it is.

My hardware should handle it, the thing I downloaded from MS said it was OK......but it is sure to be slower......maybe a new video card, some more RAM, and a dual core cpu.....and....and.....

OK Linux fan boys.....I've got my fire proof suit on.....go for it!

MAPS is $800ish per year, it is a 100% claimable expense as well so knock off GST and 39%. You get 10 current OS and Office licences plus the whole back office thing, one of each version of server including SBS, Exchange, SQL ISA etc, around US$50000 worth, if you can prove to MS you are an IT business you are in, might be worth a shot...

Helps if you get the spelling right to find it on a map :p Its Awhitu...

The steel mill isnt in Awhitu - its on the other side of the water... Awhitu is basically the peninsula going north from Waiuku up to the entrance of the Manukau Harbour. The town of Awhitu is a mere gas station right up near the top! :) See map attached

I grew up in Waiuku - in fact took some photos out there last night at Kariotahi Surf beach on the west coast of a fantastic sunset... will post some images tonight..

I think it would be a great place for photos - theres lots of places right up the peninsula... Waiuku is about half an hour from Manukau, and then to the top of the Awhitu Peninsula you're looking at about another half an hour from Waiuku. So its not overly "close" - although I'm used to it as my parents live out there.

Hi John,
good to see you back (even if I didn't know you were ill!)
I've been using Norton since about 2002 but have given up with it as it uses too much in the way of resources trying to do too many things at once, and tries to be all things to all people. I've seen instances of it at work where it doesn't pick up viruses even when latest updates are installed - and using other vendors software immediately picks stuff up.
Currently I'm using AVG which I haven't had any problems with (& it's free - always a bonus)

akiwi

So....who is planning on upgrading to Vista when it comes out in a couple of weeks?

I get a "FREE" upgrade as I bought a computer with XP Media in November. Yesterday I went about ordering the "FREE" upgrade (Maybe it didn't say Free just implied it), and found that with all the costs it would cost 97 Euro = $180. I thought I'd think a bit more about it. On the one hand it would be good to have a legal copy & as said being in the IT business it is good to play with the new toys.

Loved India, waitiing for air nz to open up the Auckland - Delhi (think its delhi) flight sometime this year, then I will go back.
I spent a month in India on my way to Europe. Firstly I was in Kashmihr. Beautiful place.. but the people drove me crazy! After that all other places in India the people where great.

I am interested in the photo management stuff in Vista Ultimate.....looks pretty good.

I'm also interested in upgrading to the 40D. I am almost at 40,000 clicks on my 350D & a little worried as to how ling it will last. I'm pretty hard on my gear, so I need something a little more sturdy. I suspect it whill have the anti dust mechanism from the 400D & approy the same sensor. 10mp doesn't realy interest me. 8 woult be fine... but it impresses the girls when they ask "How many megapixels has that got?" The most common question when someone asks you about your camera.

What anitvirus software do you IT guys rely on? Ive been using Norton for the longest time without any problems but have been hearing that there are better ones out there like Kapersky, BitDefender (although slow scanning), McAfee seems alright, then theres new NOD32 and the ZoneAlarm range.

AVG Free.

Have only had 3 computers or so that have had a problem with it in the last 4-5 years.

Uninstalling Norton is like hitting a turbo button.

:p Its Awhitu... I grew up in Waiuku..

Great! We have a photo-tour guide.:p

you might find that AVG free will be not telling you the whole truth. I have read a couple of reports lately that rate AVG free as good as having no AV software running at all.. the latest free version will not be supported anywhere as near as it has in the past.

The AV guy at our place recommends Trend for most types of applications. scores very highly on most fronts. also has a firewall and anti spyware elements included. the 2006 package not very good as it slowed down the PC's but the new 2007 version is much lighter on resources.

The best way to do it is to get another simple utility from Norton that actualy removes it for you.
Just uninstalling it, dosn't remove all the services, or reg entrys.

The trouble is this;
div id="content" style="border-style:solid; border-width:1px; width: 547px; height: 321px; padding-left:4px; padding-right:4px; padding-top:1px; padding-bottom:1px">

So you've set the parent div to 547px, then;

<img border="0" src="img/img1.jpg" class="image" height="317" width="670" alt="" />

You've set the content in the div to 670px - the CSS is working exactly as it should, the trouble is that IE actually renders it incorrectly, making you think you've done it right.

You then make the outline;
<div style="border-style:solid; border-width:1px; position: absolute; width: 551px; height: 71px; z-index: 2; left: 356px; top: 143px; padding-left:4px; padding-right:4px; padding-top:1px; padding-bottom:1px" id="layer2">

Which you've set to 551px wide...

So you've got 3 different widths for the one bit of content! Not to mention the padding values...

This is the trouble with using programs to design your website - particularly in "layout" or "visual" mode - so much extra stuff goes in that doesn't actually help, and can make things work incorrectly.

Norton Internet Security Suite which came with the notebook (Core Duo 2ghz, 1gig RAM, 100gig HD) seems to be running very well... but if I can get optimal speeds by moving to something that uses less resources and does a better job then why not. I will be shifting the home computers to Avast or AVG once the Norton licence expires.

Speaking of moderation:
A twenty-eight year old Sacramento mother of three has died of water intoxication after taking part in a local radio competition to win a Wii console.

Jennifer Strange was found dead on Friday at her home after taking part in a contest named “Hold your wee for a Wii” at the studios of radio station KDND 107.9. The competition involved drinking large quantities of water, with the last person to go to the toilet winning a Wii console – currently out of stock in most of North America.

An Associated Press interview with another contestant, named James Ybarra, claimed that contestants were initially given eight ounce bottles of water to drink every fifteen minutes, with larger bottles being used once contestants began to drop out. According to Ybarra, “They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk." He described the victim as “a nice lady” and that “she was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

According to Wikipedia's definition of the condition, water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is upset by a rapid intake of water. It is unclear how serious a danger to the contestant’s health KDND knew the competition to be at the time.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, claimed to the AP that station personnel were “stunned” when they heard of Strange's death. "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said. The incident has already been widely reported by mass media outlets around the world.

When I was in Ireland visiting some relatives just outside of Dublin, he said you could tell how far you were from Dublin by the quality of the Guiness.

Kiwis drink a lot of beer, I have sat out at the IT department at DB in Otahuhu and watched the trucks loading up and heading off, there is a lot of beer going out of that place!

BTW I scored 86 years, 54 to go :D My old neighbour was a PhD at Auckland Uni, he was leading a study not to lengthen peoples lives, but rather lengthen the amount of quality in someones lives, many people live well in to their 80's a small proportion of them live quality lives. Apparently eating healthy, remaining mentally and physically active are important.

I wonder what cameras will look like in 54 years?

Hey I live in Munich Germany. There's probably less guns & crime here than in N.Z.

... The Beer is better too! (& I'm not saying it's bad in N.Z.)

Agree on point 1 - the crims just have to see the SWAT equivalent of the German police arrive and then game's over!

As for beer, mind you prophets are never welcome in their own countries... the brews from Mac's and Monteith's rival some of the best brews in the world. Not to mention the micro-breweries at Cock & Bull -- has anyone tried the Monk's Habit?

Remember, the quality of beer is highly dependent on water quality. Apparently, water is so relatively clean here in NZ that impurities have no way of influencing the taste of the beer! Trust me, I've been in the flavour industry long enough.

What do you mean....they sell Stella over here don't they?

Stella is bottled locally isn't it?

I think that's his point........

Iv just taken to drinking Double Brown. Its actualy very, very good. Its just simple beer. No flashy marketing, no flashy brewing technicques, no trying to be an overseas imported beer brewed localy.
Its just good honest, full flavoured beer.

Double Brown is manufactured by whom? I've got to try that when I'm better... read after 8 weeks!

Guinness is my fav brew! They don't consider it a beer but rather a medication for all that ails you:lol:

Indeed, what needs to be looked at is improving the quality of life for seniors. I wouldn't like to be alive at 79 if I am a burden to my wife, sons or society.

Beer, can't stand the stuff. Can't see why it's so important to drink either. Just can't figure that out.

Anyway next subject please. :)

14 days till we we move

Started organising everything. Glad I have heaps of computer boxes at work now. Lets hope I get a faster connection I need a plan that gives me faster upload speeds.

Well All my booked models for Jan is done. Total models photographed in 2 months 10. I am still getting referals, may have to put on hold untill after the move and studio is built.

I will carry on with models but 1/2 per week. Not ready to charge yet so keep as hobby. Landscapes will always be my subject of choice but the glamour is teaching me a lot about photography as well as about who I am as a person.

I guess I am not one of those hard sale pushy types that control the shoot and tell the model what to do and how to pose. Maybe that is an advantage.

I thought that's what a model photographer has to do. after all you are using the person to get your image?

I might wrong with that.

Tony, I have to agree with Mark -- you will need to learn to direct models to pose. It is like portraiture work where people are asked to sit, look, and smile/pout/look funny, etc. Not that I am saying that the shoot has to be canned or scripted all the way through.

That is why I stick to the less "challenging" things like macro, landscape, sports... though I may get a feel soon for wedding photography (one way or the other!)

Otherwise, have a great move Tony!

could be, but only if the photographer does a good job.

Congratulations on getting such a throughput at startup.

How do you feel the photoshoots went? How did your skills improve?

Best wishes for the move and settling in.

Worse. But now you have got me started, The coffee machine could only use 4/5ths of the milk in its bottle before it needed topping up, so when it got down to the last 1/5th it would get topped up, so at any point in time the bottle had the following:
80% Fresh Milk
16% Older Milk
3.2% Expired Milk
0.64% Yoghurt
0.128% Nasty Yoghurt
0.032% Primordial Scum

As for a plan with faster uploads.. I just signed up with xnet on their flood plan.. fullspead up and down for $49.95, plus $1 per gb ontop of that.
