I personally have no issue photographing any kind of ceremony, same sex doesn't bother me. I'd like to have it in my portfolio, but not enough to fly up for it. I have a greek wedding coming up.

Thats what I thought. I'd do it, but alas I will be in wanaka that day.

Nevermind.

i am looking at getting a canon 2x converter - but $674 seem expensive.. any better deals around that anyone has seen.. or any second hand ones going.
IO don't know if the 2x is such a good choice.
I don't have any tele converter, bit With the 2x you will probably be loosing the auto focus of your lenses mless you have the 2.8 versions. (Something to do withe the number of F stops). Also I have heard a lot of complaints about the picture quality with the 2x. The 1.4x seems to get better results.
I have also heard that there is not a big advantage in getting the Canon one over Kenko.

Well my baby goes in to Canon today for a look, AF has been becoming an issue and is now getting close to unusable, the only way to get sharp shots was to stop down or use manual focus, which under the conditions was not always possible.

I am glad I spent the extra on extending my warranty though, the camera is almost two and a half years old!

Hi All

Geez, there is a motorsport overload my way this weekend

I will be at Manfeild with the "summer saloons spectacular", and then I find out there is the international motorcross at Woodville, the drags at Masterton and the GP Hydroplanes at Wanganui - so much on one weekend!!

Mind you I hear the forecast for Sunday is not good, so that won't help any of them!

Hah~! I thought you had already taken yours in.

When I took mine in Tuesday 9 days ago, their list had about 15 SLRs on it. Those were the face to face drop offs made on the same day!! They're very busy. :(

I would recomend Auckland camera, and Apix as the two places to look at.
AC has lots of Manfrotto stuff, its expensive but good, but also very conventional.

Apix has all the Manfrotto stuff, plus some more unique stuff, like my Uni Loc.
They also sell a lot of chinesse stuff, its often as strong as the Manfrotto, but half the price and dosn't look as pretty.

Checking out Apix website now,.. Manfrotto seems quite expensive so I wouldn't really mind buying a cheaper chinesse option as long as it was still reasonably heavy duty as I'm quite ruff with gear. Is there anything I should stay away from?

I also need to buy a lens hood, is there anything I should know about them?

And can someone explain why this is worth so much?

I would say stay away from the cheap light aluminium tripods with plastic fittings. They wobble & don't last long.

Don't forget that most of the more expensive makes come without the level head..i.e. the bit you attach the camera to where you can swivel left, right, up, down etc. These things can also be really expensive.

No Idea why that tripod in the link is so expensive:eek:

For a lens hood, which lens is it for?

Avoid those generic rubber things as they cause vignetting on a zoom lens. Your probably better off biting into the sour apple and paying the ridiculous price for the ones made specifically for your lens. They are normally cut out in a petal pattern to match your lenses characteristics, and look cool too ;)

CDN.. Remember to get what you pay for. Manfrotto is a interchangeable system. With the ability to buy additional plates and heads.

I got a Chineese one from trademe $200 and then a 3 way head of another trade me person. But my tripod get so much abuse due to all my waterfall trips.
It hold a 30D and bigma with out movement.

Hmm, around $100-$150 if that's possible... What do you mean by heaviest load and whats the norm?

You won't get much for $150.
The best idea is to go into Apix, let them know your budget, and see what they have in stock.
The staff are very honest about the quality of what they are selling, and will not upsell lower quality crap.
They will let you know what your money gets you, and may even suggest coming back later after you've saved a bit more.
For around $200-250 you should be ablet to get a pretty good quality set of legs and ball head that will hold most gear.

The other option is Auckland Camera sell Slik tripod kits, and often have one or two on special, and may have something in your price range.
But, you won't see it listed on thier website.

Yeah, what he said.....save up a bit more, or you will probably regret it.
I spent $150 on a tripod and am not really happy with it. It is big and sturdy, so I have no problems with camera shake etc, but it is too heavy to lump around, and not very flexable. It will get replaced sometime when I have budget.

Not sure what your gear is - add up weight of your camera+battery+heaviest lens+flash+batteries to see what the tripod will neeed to put up with. Make sure whatever you look at will cope with at least 30% more than this weight and factor in new lenses down the track. I got a Velbon tripod many years ago and it would have been fine for the small EOS I had, except I have since aquired heavier gear that the Velbon just won't support properly. Hell, the Manfrotto I bought at Christmas was visably moving the other week when 100-400 was used in a bit of a breeze!
Wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on trademe either although at the merest hint of the Manfrotto branding, some folks seem to go beserk with bidding.

Lens hoods will depend on what thery're for - remind us again what gear you've got?

133x versus the Ultra 80x. The speed difference is obvious and important when shooting in continuous mode. It also shows when transferring images by card-reader on a USB2HS connection.

The other factor is the temperature range - performance can drop off at the cold end; using Extreme III extends the reasonable operating range beyond "normal" human activity, whereas Ultras can fade off.

Few of us have cameras needing the Extreme IV performance, yet...

CDN I have a spare tripod now which you can use until such a time as you make you make a purchase. It is a WT3570 which should be ok as a temp for you with your lens, its just a bit light for my 200 2.8. PM me is you want

Peter -- great shots!

Argggghhhh....I am sooooooo unfit. Just got the bike off the wall for the first time since we moved in here over a year ago. Pumped up the tires, found the lights and helmet, and went for a little ride. I hate hills, but I have another 10-15kgs and some colesterol to get rid of.

I can relate to that:p Though I've lost some 4 kg during my stint at Middlemore... so I am down to 91kg. 6 more to go for my ideal weight...

Team up with John. Hell Ive put on 5kgs in 25yrs since I left school. Your wives must run around after you lads to much

haha - i left uni 8 years ago.. 75kgs... in 2001 i was still 75 kgs... after my car smash on went the weight.. in three years i got to 130 kgs,,, :(

now i am 100 kgs but coming down slowly,, another year and I WILL BE 80 - 85 kgs..

Good on ya Chris!

and this is what the dog deiced to bring home tonight... and the dog is not that big.. dumb mutt. she was carrying it in her mouth - then deposited it under the dinning room table..

bugger it 1x4 / or / 2x extender and a shorter wide angle. and maybe a nifty....

save for the longer lens.. but with the 200mm and the extender

I have also had the experience where I did a shoot or several shootings with a model & everything worked just right & there where heaps of great pictures. Then a session where everything turned out Cr@p and I and the model were not happy with the photos. I have to work on my Poses. I concentrate on Light camera composition, little details like buttons open, creases etc. but haven't yet got the eye for what is a flattering or a non flattering pose.
I think I need to be a woman for that. I look at the even lighting the perfect background, the focus spot on on the eyes.. show it to my wife & she sais ... 'She has a double chin!!!!' or something.
Must admit I'm a little nervous of the shooting 2 at the same time tonight. Even more to concentrate on.

Why stops people stealing my pics

No, it doesnt stop anybody stealing your pics. It offers no protection for your photos, and it makes your site rather user-un-friendly.

People right click for many legit reasons.

right click - > print
right click - > open in new window
right click - > open in new tab
right click - > bookmark this page
right click - > send link to friend

These are all things you want your users to do.

again, I'll repeat it :
Turning off right click offers NO PROTECTION whatsoever for your photos!

Akiwi I agree about what our wives notice. I dont think people realise what you see when looking through the view finder.

How many photos do you do on average per session? What is the number that are keepers?

Hi Tony.. Last night for example I took about 250 photos in 3 hours. I had problems with my lights not firing quite often but will keep 80% probably. however I will select 1 or 2 from each theme or set. In the end I will probably have between 5 and 10 that I would consider good enough for a gallery. I haven't sorted or processed yet so it could be more or less.

http://www.tonysearle.co.nz/new/index.html

the only issue I have is getting my mainpage image to center regardless of size screen it tiles on my widescreen laptop. Can anyone help.

The whole site is basically html and .js files nice and easy perfect for me

Loos realy good. Only problem is that it loads realy slow on my machine.
I agree about the right mouse click issue. Anyone can do a screen shot or use software like snaggit to capture images.

Don't you hate it when people can be so influenced by marketing blaablaa & only think on a name or something.

I realy like it.
Just the issue that it seems slow, but either your photos are too big or it is the server as the demo site loaded fast.

Had a fun shoot last night for a competition at dpchallenge.com. Theme was 'Nude'. I got 2 females ;)

Must start processing.

Is anyone else having slow issues with my new site?

It wasn't a problem lighting them both as they where both always very close together. I did mainly body landscapes.

I trid your web site again & it takes 10 seconds per picture.. too long. They are also too big for my screen. Even after pressing F11, I need to scroll up & down to see the whole image or to press the buttons below. My screen is 1440 X 900 pixels.

Oh well I better make them smaller then. Does the same for me. The Landscape orintated ones are fines its the portratit ones that you have to scroll down

Tony - when Peter reported the 10 seconds per picture I checked it from over here - 3 to 4 seconds per picture.

That's possible. Your initial page is a bit slower to load the first time because your first page image is quite large compared to the other pictures.

There is a LOT of work in customising it fully - links page, clients page, the gallery thumbs and all. Once you get it done it should look good though.

It comes with link pages, and client pages have removed. It is a great template and so easy to work. Yes the main page pic is about 500k need to reduce

Yeah - I have had it a month or so but haven't put it up on my site, yet - still customising it for the way I want it to work - too many files in the root directory and some of them conflict with other software on my web server so I have re-written quite a lot of it.

Not bad for $100, though.

You have the same template?

What sort of things did you do to yours?

It's loading fast here Tony. Just had a look at some of your landscape gallery.
The Karekare wave and storm shots are fantastic.

Agree about the portrait orientation. Too large for my small monitor and I have to scroll for miles.

yup - the exact same template.

So far I have moved the stylesheet into its own directory and the javascripts into their own directory. I have renamed the pictures directory and am about to move the html files (except index.html) into their own directory - I don't like messy root directories on a server and would prefer some simple structure to the layout.

Hi Thornfield

I was born and brought up (dragged up) just outside of Christchurch - still have a brother and a son living there - will be visiting in March.

Hey, if anyone ever goes into the frogprints offices, take a look around for a book I made. It was damaged in the post, so it's being replaced. They asked if they could use it as a sample, I said sure but only if they put a label on it that it was a damaged sample.

Lucky about the hotel.. You'll find we've never got anything like that out of them... It will be good to add to your portfolio, and hopefully make some dollars to sponsors and drivers, but don't think D1 themselves have a budget yet! :p

Wazza, I notice they're not coming down this far !!! I was hoping to have a go at photographing them as well. Is it too cold for them, so their tyres don't warm up and smoke as much?
