Tony, I don't recognise the person on the left. She looks vaguely familiar.....I think if you did enough photoshop work on her she would look just like Helen Clark.

It's only ever so slightly slower than XP on hardware 12 months old or less. See reviews on Tom's hardware. No new M$ operating system has been faster than it's predecessor.
Sure, its the same speed, if you disable the crap that Vista calls a new interface. So why would you want it again?
XP Pro = $698, Vista Ultimate = $648 (yes you can do a clean install from the upgrade cd, as noted by microsoft internal documentation).
You can, but to do so would violate their EULA. (As well as in the States being a criminal matter - DMCA violation). (You're circumventing their security).
Hmm.. added security, better searching, more intuitive interface, built in spyware protection, user account control, bit locker... etc etc. Somewhat more than zero eh?
Added security? The only difference in security is that there are more pop up boxes asking if you want to do something... 90% of which will be misunderstood or ignored. That's not added security, it's covering microsofts ass.
"Webroot's testing procedures had found that Windows Defender failed to block 84 per cent of malware in a sample set that included 15 of the most common variations of existing malware and spyware, according to the company. "
A half-baked half-assed attempt at spyware protection, which looks successful because not much has been written specifically for it as spyware writers focus on the most used operating system in the world.
Bit locker - a nice feature, but I foresee security problems somehow.
User account control - yes, people should run under a proper user account rather than as admin all the time.
So you get added hassles, with a couple of features already available in XP.
Please explain. I have more control over what's going on on my pc with vista, than ever before. If you're referring too DRM, well I haven't struck any of those demons yet.
As an example, if you have a non-microsoft certified cable between your end-display (say a projector) and your pc, Vista will downgrade the quality of the HD (assuming you've got an HD movie source).
"Say you've just bought Pink Floyd's “The Dark Side of the Moon”, released as a Super Audio CD (SACD) in its 30th anniversary edition in 2003, and you want to play it under Vista. Since the S/PDIF link to your amplifier/speakers is regarded as insecure for playing the SA content, Vista disables it, and you end up hearing a performance by Marcel Marceau instead of Pink Floyd."
Again, please explain. It's been tested by literally MILLIONS of participants in the beta and RC programs.
Beta and release are hugely different things. Just ask anyone who's been using Lightroom. A million MS fanboys aren't going to convince me that Windows ME was a great OS either.
It's better than XP on many levels. See added functionality. Perhaps not better for yourself, but for joe average who doesn't know much about pcs, it's a lot safer and more secure.
Mind you, I probably wouldn't advocate spending the money if you've already purchased XP - if you're given the upgrade option for little or no money though, I would say go for it.
What levels?
As far as I can see, it lulls users into a false sense of security while disabling functionality that they've already got, and charging them exorbitantly for the privilege.
I think you'll have a lot more issues with drivers, file formats, program compatibility, games etc moving to linux, than you will to vista. But it's whatever you feel comfortable with at the end of the day.
Probably, but I'll feel less bad about it.
I wouldn't. Windowblinds slows your pc down. I keep on installing it, and having to remove it within hours. Windowblinds doesn't have half the new features of vista?
WindowsBlinds is just an example - and I haven't had any problems with it slowing my pc down. I certainly can't imagine it slowing anything down as much as Vista.
I haven't found it's gotten in the way at all? Seems good to me, my only issue is with the backup program which is a step backward and lacks the functionality of the previous versions. Honestly, I have more issues with fully service packed XP SP2 installs now, than my RC1 version of vista. Immediately after SP2 was released, XP was great, but I feel it's been going downhill. Too many patches on patches if you get my drift.
Patches on patches are the usual MS sloppy programming way. At least most of the attack vectors are covered in one way or another now.
But here's a clue to how smoothly Vista went;
After 2 years of working on the code.... they threw it all away and started again. Remember how desperate MS have been to get this product out? Do you honestly believe that THIS time they've been careful with their programming and have closed all the security holes that get created when you're rushing?

Liz uses a little Olympus U, or something... Which takes some really nice pictures, as long as there is plenty of light.

Mums seem to like shot of kids! So I would look at face recognition units, althought it is a little early in the techology perhaps.
The Canon 900Ti would be my preference, except for the price. At a third less, The Fuji F31FD is worth looking at.

Take her shopping, and find a shop with display models she can turn on and play with.
Then look for something from Canon, Olympus or Fuji, that has a user interface she can make sense of.
Avoid the other brands, they are more interested in how it looks than how it preforms.

Would the Microsoft haters and fanboys like to take the discussion somewhere else.....like I don't know......maybe a computer forum? `I know this is a general ramblings thread, but the Vista discussion is getting a little heated and in depth. Just as long as nobody claims that Nikon is better than Canon, I don't care which operating system you run.

my bet is that they upgraded the firmware to windows vista home edition - realised what they had done.. tried to reinstall xp firmware then found out you were using an ' evaluation ' key with that product. the techie then went for a smoko and dropped your camera down the toilet before he flushed..
but by some strange quirk of fate the bzp party pills he had taken over the weekend were being cleansed by his kidneys and the strange green goblins he had been seeing all weekend fixed the issues with your camera, restoring back to factory state.
So its ready but they are charging you for the deep cleaning to remove the strange smell that is now in and around your camera.
However they will ship you a a430 p&s by mistake and lose your camera in the post.
all is not lost because you spot a 12 year old girl getting into John Keys (national leader) car outside a school after he offered her a bag of sweets..
which in my opinion was the strangest bit of political posturing i have seen in a long time.. most grown men would be arrested for that.. But you waste no time in getting a front page shot for all the national papers. The money from this allows you to buy a replacement camera.
All in time for you to snap the Kiwi Cricket team sneaking in the backdoor (Invercargill international airport) after that humiliating loss to the English.

Sorry Scott but, this discussion is camera related.. we all use digital photos and PC's to alter and improve these images. so what software we use on the PC's does impact on how we use photography in our lives.
As does the lengthy discussion we had on telecom and broadband, id drifting a sport, when will tag gets his camera back (sorry tag), when will tony move in to his new house , and now he has what he will be doing with his garage.(sorry tony) - which in my opinion all effect how (we) take pictures and what we do with them and are very important to members of this group.
So questions like will Vista improve my system? why upgrade? does it kill cs2 etc (even thou we managed to flog it to death) are relevant esp in a ramble thread.
However i do agree it is old news now and we all need to move on.
With that in mind .. here are a few tips on Vista.
do you run pre XP OS (ie 98 me nt etc) - then its time to upgrade you PC and OS
do you have XP home - hmm one more year of updates and thats it. So start to plan on an upgrade.
do you xp pro - you have another 5 years of support so keep plugging away if you are happy, if you are not happy then upgrade,
If you don't want to upgrade and are not happy, have some happy pills and take some more pictures.
Above all --- we are all on the same side and everyone should be encouraged to actively participate in the forum, all as happy Kiwi's...

A question for all you techie's In-light of the recent discussions regarding operating systems and earlier ones regarding speeding up systems by removing Norton for instance, I am considering altering my setup here (must improve spelling)
i.e. using this system as a stand alone system (not connected to the net) for photo/video processing and removing everything extranious. Do you think this will improve the performance of say for instance batch processing via BIbble Pro.
System is P4 3200 HT, 800FSB, 2G Ram, 3 x 160G SATA, Saphire 512M video card running XP Pro.
I have a reasonably new Dell system that I can run connected to the net, up-loading to the net could be a bit of a pain??!!
Any thoughts re performance improvement of existing system with all extainious stuff removed?? One of the issues I have is a lack of storeage on system, just dont want to buy any more HD until such a time as I update system fully, probably to 64 bit, this probably wont be this year.

this system should run very well, and indeed should be very snappy. A concern that i would have is how you transfer data between PC's as this is a great way of introducing virus into your PC. Always have an update AV even if you don't go the web.. usb keys cf cards network connections between PC's all have threats. Get rid of norton.. (use the uninstall pack from norton) replace with just an AV like trend or etrust. (if its not on the web then go easy on the firewall (windows one will do) no emails so no need to scan emails. don't have any services that are unnecessary running.. check start up.. if you have programs that auto update software untick them in the start up. and do you really need MS messenger running or even installed.
As for storage - external HDD or DVD's (i prefer HDD) unless you want to buy a server or some network storage,,,

The only thing that I will be transfering to the stand alone would be my own CF cards, DV via firewire. I have two printers, a Canon i9950 which I plan to connect to the standalone and a HP Laser for the other one.
I do back-up to an external HD and will continue via this, possiblly another for storeage of RAWs??
Currantly, the whole family share this system, wifie and eldest daughter like downloading stuff, lots of music, the odd bit of video etc. They each have their own user accounts. I would set up the other computor with these user accounts and I believe there is some form of disc space control that I can initiate (not 100% sure of this).
As far as any upgradeing of programes and system updates, I presume that I could have some basic AV system and just turn it on when/if I connect to the net (via firewalled router).
Oh & just for the record, very disapointing performance in the cricket, not worth staying up to 12:30!!!. I'm not sure Invercargal International Airport would be able to handle the large depressed entourage that would have accompanied the team (term used loosly)

with the family PC .. partition the HDD ... one partition for the OS and the other for docs and photos this way a virus will attack the OS allowing you if you need to reload you get to protect your docs etc.

My PC is used solely for photos and software development. It's connected to the net but the lappie is used for the majority of surfing. The OS is on a completely separate partition on a completely separate HDD in case I need to reinstall. No emails either on that PC. A cost analysis of the "upgrade" to Vista:
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html
I have had a read of that.. very hard to not fall asleep while doing so! Seems like his beef is with content protection and playing HD movies at full quality. Somehow I don't see someone who spends thousands on a home theatre trying to get windows to play their (hd)dvds.. you? I would be interested to see examples of degraded vs non degraded playback. The real question I draw from that though, is how long before they start trying to implement DRM on high definition photographs, and how will affect the authors of said photos when they try to edit them.
By the way, this pc is no slower running vista than xp, in fact with respect to workflow, it's actually faster to get some things done. The review on Tom's hardware was with full aero transparency yada yada enabled too, nothing turned off in the name of saving cpu cyles.

I have read an article regarding the DRM and a user keeping their copy of the certificate and being able to use the same certificate when it gets installed later. Some people have the fear that DRM version might change and when you are forced to upgrade old content will not play. nothing like buying plenty of songs from apple and giving them you money, they deiced to upgrade the DRM software and bingo your old songs don't play anymore.
Also another note, it seems that MS DRM is different that the Apple DRM. Hmmm nice. And then there's the thing about media company's, it seems now that some of them don't like giving control of copyright content to company's like MS and Apple.

I was down your way just after new year, my eldest sister lives there, moved about 3 years ago from Winton. Didn't notice too much depression, quite the oposite infact, some of the sports venues are quite outstanding
Actually it isn't all that bad, just I feel Southland people lack....oomph. Getting a tradie to turn up on time!! I've contacted the hedge trimmer several times and he can't be bothered. Finding a decorator, then trying to get them to commit to a date and time. It's like having teeth extracted. The stadium and velodrome...superb, Teretonga...nice track shame about the paddock but watching the same 6 cars go round gets a bit boring. That's why I've stopped going and having a reverse grid doesn't help. Rugby Park...could do with a lick of paint and a decent rugby match. The kart track...very nice but I give up how many times I've contacted the kart club about taking photos there!!

Liz uses a little Olympus U, or something... Which takes some really nice pictures, as long as there is plenty of light.
A cost analysis of the "upgrade" to Vista:

Thanks. I haven't looked at the new Olymus's yet. They have a splash proof one don't they?
You might like to ask this in a photography forum!:)
Oooh That's a good idea. I hadn't thought of that!
Take her shopping, and find a shop with display models she can turn on and play with.
Then look for something from Canon, Olympus or Fuji, that has a user interface she can make sense of.
Avoid the other brands, they are more interested in how it looks than how it preforms.
I'd love to, but she is in Palmerston North and I'm here in Germany. Maybe Tracy will have to go shopping with her.
on the P&S cameras, I used to use an olympus C750uz, which I found very easy to use, and was good with the 10X optical zoom.
10 x zoom would be very nice.
my bet is that they upgraded the firmware to windows vista home edition - realised what they had done.. tried to reinstall xp firmware then found out you were using an ' evaluation ' key with that product. the techie then went for a smoko and dropped your camera down the toilet before he flushed..
but by some strange quirk of fate the bzp party pills he had taken over the weekend were being cleansed by his kidneys and the strange green goblins he had been seeing all weekend fixed the issues with your camera, restoring back to factory state.
Brilliant... Didn't you take your pills today?

He's a professor/not-mad scientist, it's his job to be boring :)
Absolutely I can see that - why buy a dvd player when you've already got a pc that you can plug in easily? I'd rather run a cable (tho preferably would have a wireless setup) between my pc and my tv than pay for another piece of hardware. That way I don't have to spend thousands (more).
It just seems like they're taking away functionality that already exists in order to squeeze a few more dollars out of you. I know they talk about "piracy" prevention, but realistically, the keys to the DRM have been cracked already - the only people this sort of thing disadvantage are the honest customers who have to pay more or will run into compatibility issues.
Hopefully the same issues won't arise with photos...
Vista should be faster with some processes as it's engineered to use hyperthreading/multi-cores better. The sad thing is that Vista could have been an amazing advance - but they stripped out WinFS, and all the other pieces that would have truly been (IMO) worth paying for.

And the winner is...
They replaced the A2 CBA, (whatever that is), the sensor (I mean, the whole flippin sensor?!?), replaced two image sensor spacers (whatever they are) and reprogrammed it. Just done a few trial shots and I can't get any bands to any extent, even at 1600 and that's pushing the EC AND the brightness to the max in CS2. At normal exposure there is hardly any noise at all. So I'm a happy chappy. And this little lot only cost me...nothing...all done under warantee.
So the prize goes to, ummmm, no-one so there.

Good on you Chris! Not bad charging fees you have. One suggestion though, bring your pricing down by $0.05, e.g., $24.95 instead of $25 -- it is a psychological thing... I learned this while I was at H&S. It is funny how people find it easier to reconcile the fact that it is not $25 but rather $24.95...

NZShrimper here a bit of advice that has been said here a couple of days ago and from my own experence.
Look at the Sigma 120-300 F2.8 Most people here know how anal I am about sharp glass. I borrowed Wazzas and did some test shots on my 5D and it was sharper than my 70-200 F4. It is quick and still sharp with a kenko pro 300 2xTC.
Yes it is a heavy lens and yes an odd size filter but you will not regret buying this lens and I think it will be much cheaper than the 300 F2.8L
Another lens is the 400mm F5.6 L. It is lighter than the 70-200F2.8 non IS. Quick in good light and also sharp. I havnt tested the 300 F4 L so cant comment.
My 2Cents worth.

It's been 3 weeks, 3 days now.
No word
We're looking at $450 odd to fix the 200 f2.8 L
Nearly 3 months now...

Isn't this the lens that turns off autofocus if you change the zoom whilst focussing?
I find myself zooming and focussing at the same time a lot.

thanks tony.. the issue i have is that i will need the 2.8 due to the light in the stadiums. f4 and f5.6 just going to kick the ISO well up to 3200. If i could get away with f5.6 i would just get a x1.4 tc. (much cheaper).
As for the Sigma the shop never had any for me to play with, but I'll have a play with one if i can get my hands on one. Weight not an issues to me.

Mate, since I started up this photo taking hobby thingy, I notice camera everywhere.
Just like when you buy a new car, you notice all of the same model. Wish my lens were the same models as some I've seen !!!!
true.. I also find myself looking for great shooting angles too. (very sad).
and its getting closer... 94 to win, 84 balls with 6 wickets in hand.

Impressive double performance. Two centuries in a row. :)
Thanks Matt: I think you owe me a few times anyway ;)
10-20mm, 580EX a couple of times.. :p
3 months to repair a 200mm 2.8? I hope they're keeping in regular contact. That's pathetic.
I joked to my dad would be quicker to send my gear to Canon Australia, and probably have better service.

Well to be fair they only took 2 months and sent it back "unrepaired" which was not what we really wanted.
But no contact at all.

i shot the second half in M mode,, but never upped the ISO hence the slow shutter speed and the motion blur. Oh well i know for next time. get the ISO up to get the shutter speed to 250..

250 for Rugby and contact sports still won't cut it.
You'd be best to shoot around 1/640th, ISO 1600, and have sharper shots.
All you need is that 400mm 2.8, and you'll be away! :D
