your right it is nice to see photos.. so come on guys lets get the challange thread going again.. oh i got this today.. just wish the cantab sky had been nice and blue rather than the dull flat grey.
Nice ones Chris... oh, btw, I also like the cheerleader;)
some bird has just flown into the window next to my desk.. the pane went with a bang and has broken into five pieces, a few feathers lost and the bird flew off.
Normally, it is the bird that breaks (its neck) rather than the glass... Must have been going somewhere in a hurry. There too goes your insurance premium...
Thats more like it :)
Ah they joys of a wife who does shift work and on weekends. Oh well have to compensate with some more "L" lens

Wow what a day!
Simon and myself went to the Drift Revolution meet at Pukekohe..
I was saying goodbye to some drifters and organisers, and one of them, Greg Munt, gave me a ride in his RX7. Boy I nearly shat myself.. A few times over. ;)
I have a bit more appreciation for them now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knSbJ430J1c
That's the drifter, and his car.
He was getting pretty good today! And doing a complete engine rebuild, to get more power.. As at the moment, throwing the car into the sweeper at 190km/h, car steps out a bit, add in a clutch kick, whilst at 7000rpm, the revs then scream at the limiter, 9000rpm, and woooahhh. :D

Yep after seeing a waste of a good RX7 drifting is for hoons IMHO.
Im looking into getting another RX7 but one that has not been modified. Most on trademe are owned by boy racers or drifters. Rust on the roof sills and Sandras "dent" killed my last one. Mind you that was 10 yrs ago dont really have the need for speed any more except in Glass
I want a classic car to do up. A 350 SL coupe merc would be nice or this

Looks like you guys had a fun meet. Wish I was there. Some great photos there guys.
I spent Saturday afternoon at the camera store getting a cheap Hama pc hot shoe adapter replaced. I bought it a few months ago & it never worked. Luckily I could reproduce it in the shop.
Probabpl cost more in time & travel costs to replace the thing, but I needed it replaces anyway, & there is the principle involved.
some bird has just flown into the window next to my desk.. the pane went with a bang and has broken into five pieces, a few feathers lost and the bird flew off.
Amazing! Either the birds are tough, or the windows are thin in NZ

There's better alternatives a third of the price. I bought the Vosonic drive, which was $300-400 for 80Gb, but no LCD - coz I don't need one to chimp. Edit the pics on your PC when you're home like everyone else. Or does it come with it's own coffee maker?

Yep for those $$$, you get a 15.1" screen, a 60GB drive and a DVD writer. The only thing left going for the Epson is the size. Oh and try running Photoshop on the Epson! (I got a exDemo CoreDuo Laptop with 1GB RAM, 60GB Drive 15.1" screen DVD writer wireless etc etc for $1000 the other day!)
As for the Vosonic, got one, haven't used it for months. Too much of a pain waiting for a 4GB card to download, then verify, especially of you are doing a shoot. Save the $$$ and get more CF cards! $300-400 for the Vosonic will get you at least a couple of 4GB's, possibly 3 if the wind is blowing the right way on the day, but the $1300 and what ever (or $1200ish if you are well connected ;)) will get you around 8 good (not the best) 4GB cards, now I get around 450 RAW's on my 20D with a 4GB, so that is 3600 shots! I know where I would spend my $$$!

Still might not have to, there are some shower heads that use the pressure of the mains cold water to increase the pressure of the hot water, we are looking at that option as we are about to do our bathroom up. The neighhours just replaced their low pressure cylinder with a mains, the cylinder ended up being half the cost! (new valves, some tap where etc)

Attention all gadget Geeks.. im looking to purchase a GPS unit to aid (entertain) me in my upcoming travels around the south island. I'd like it to have street level maps of NZ, be small and portable (read handheld) but also have the ability to connect to my laptop via serial/usb and provide coords to input into google earth for real time sat imagery, and or full screen mapping (sometimes those tiny screens are not enough).
I'm not sure there is anything which can do all this.. i might end up with two units, a basic one for PC connectivity, and a new Navman or something for the navigation..
Also after any inventive ideas for mounting a laptop in a ford transit for the above purpose!

Do you perchance have a nokia series 60 (symbian) phone? If so your ideal solution would be a usb gps dongle for it, as it can connect to both the lappy and the phone, so big or small screen you choose.
As far as I know there aren't any gps mapping devices which connect to pc's or have software for pc's in NZ yet. Could be wrong of course.

E-Trex Legend (My last one was $245 on TM).
BrentC's (searchable) NZ street maps around $100.
Fast enough for realtime navigation and links nicely to the laptop and GE or whatever.

Oh, I am about to phone them about mine, I have a wedding to shoot in a week and a half, must remember not to use that excuse to get my camera back (apparently it is right up there with "the cheque is in the mail"). Mine is a warranty repair though so hopefully they will just do it.
Also on support here is one from ColorVision on Vista support of the Spyder2:
Peter,
Vista, requires a signature to install third party applications. Our current drivers for Spyder2 are currently being evaluated by Microsoft. Once we acquire this approval/signature; Vista will be supported. We hope to have Vista support for our Spyder2 products in two to three weeks; this is our number one priority. Please keep an eye on our website for the release.

I am compiling a list of other reasons, I have hit some other issues around it being either "too smart", too locked down, or that hardware or software suppliers didn't seem to hear about Vista until last week. If it is just a basic home PC with the latest hardware, or a corporate PC that uses one network, all is good, just don't deviate from that or else! I have frequently been stumped by issues that would have been easily dealt with under XP.

24 Minutes and all the guys could tell me is that there was no information about any work done yet. He said he would check with service and call me back this afternoon. I pointed out I need an ETA as I actually use it and may have to make arrangements to hire/borrow a 20D if it will not be ready in the next week or so, I kept it nice and polite.

XP had the same sort of problems when it was released, now who still runs 2000\Me\98? Next to nobody!
Give everyone a few months to update drivers, patch programs, and not least of all MS to release a few patches and everything will settle down. Then (and only then!) Vista will be the OS to run.

Yippie a free weekend this weekend. First one in months. Might head out to the beach and get in some photography. I think I will make it Anawhata as its been a year since I have been out there. Any one else keen?
PS the walk back up is not for the faint of heart it is about a 30min solid climb and you will feel your legs sting.

Well Canon's response was at 9:45am or so Monday morning, after my email sent soon after 5pm Friday.
They advised 1-2 days, well it's theoretically been 1.9 days, and still no response back.
And that's just for a quote.
Why is Canon NZ service so bad?
Other people on the forums, keep talking about how rapt they are, with getting it repaired in 2-3 days.
I really think they should put you in a queue, allow you to keep your half working, or even working camera (if it's just a general check up, or sensor dust issue), and drop it in, the day before actually being required. - Oh wait, that would be too much hassle, and putting the customer first. Bad idea.

umm yea that could work, but it's hard to work that way when you have to send in something from another city. So I don't think it would work.
And I am not going to rave about canon repair, sure they give me a call when the gear arrived and even gave me updates. However the tech didn't give me a call asking for more information. I am sure the fault description didn't give them enough info. got 2 different story's regarding the repair of the 10D. When they rang me up saying it's being sent back etc the person said that all they did was clean the sensor. However the invoice says they re-adjusted the AF.
but in saying that it came back repaired and it does focus correctly.

It appears that in over a year nothing has changed - no systems to speak of. How about we RFP an end-to-end tracking system for them Pete, and say it must run on Dell machines with Vista loaded. Second thoughts, maybe not.

I was hopeing you were wrong to save me a few $$$$$$ and having to replace the hot water cyl
Hi Tony
Do not give up just yet!!, give me a brief description of your system i.e.
1: Where is the cylinder located, ground floor or 1st floor and where in relation to the cylinder is your shower/showers (above or same level)
2:Pressume that cylinder is not feed with ceiling tank, most of these have gone now so I assume that you have a pressure reducing valve either under the floor or the cylinder itself. If this is so, does the cylinder have an open exhaust pipe up through the roof or does it have a relief valve fitted (either near the top of the cylinder or on the exhaust pipe on the roof)?
If the cylinder has a pressure reducing valve and an open exhaust, you should be able to increase the pressure to operate the cylinder at its maximum. Reasonably easy to do and can make a big difference.

this system should run very well, and indeed should be very snappy. A concern that i would have is how you transfer data between PC's as this is a great way of introducing virus into your PC. Always have an update AV even if you don't go the web.. usb keys cf cards network connections between PC's all have threats. Get rid of norton.. (use the uninstall pack from norton) replace with just an AV like trend or etrust. (if its not on the web then go easy on the firewall (windows one will do) no emails so no need to scan emails. don't have any services that are unnecessary running.. check start up.. if you have programs that auto update software untick them in the start up. and do you really need MS messenger running or even installed.
As for storage - external HDD or DVD's (i prefer HDD) unless you want to buy a server or some network storage,,,
Done it, took most of Sunday and then another 6 hours or so on Monday night re-doing all my back-ups.
Definatly worth doing, good performance boost, no net connected (only when I want it), no Nortons, no uncecessary stuff, much more pleasant to work with.

Rumor has it Nikon has good camera service, something I cannot say about Canon.
Never got a call back from them yesterday, so followed up today. They said that their standard turn around for evaulation (not repair) is 15 working days, well it went in on Jan the 30th (I actually dropped it in at AC on Jan25th, but they sat on it whilst they dealt with the extended warranty forms), the 15 days doesn't include public holidays, so even though it has been 15 real days now with Canon, it is only 9 days by their records.
If it was a brand new camera with a fault or I was a member of some professional group I would have had it turned around in 2-3 days.

Maybe you should write them a letter stating that you're thinking of writing into the Herald to ask if they or their readers know of anyone who can repair cameras in less than a month?

XP had the same sort of problems when it was released, now who still runs 2000\Me\98? Next to nobody!
The big issue with XP to Vista vs 98/ME/2000 to XP is that when XP was released drivers that worked were readily available in 2000. It seems that not many XP drivers work in Vista. To add to this, Vista strongly discourages the use of non-signed drivers meaning it is taking longer for hardware vendors to get drivers out. Last night I got a brand new Laser Printer, and guess what there is no way to get it to work with Vista for now, rang their support line - "What is Vista, is that a version of Linux?" At least they had heard of Linux! I am waiting to see what other driver I can use in the meantime (no LaserJet doesn't work) I could understand if it was a dodgy brand of printer, but this is a FujiXerox.
Sorry I must refrain from Vista ranting, I am not in a good place with my camera and all the driver issues I am having. To be honest though in MS's defense, the problems have not been with them, I want Vista to work, it is waaayyy cool

I think I am going to buy another hard drive to install Vista and Office 2007 on and dual boot untill I am happy that everything I need works on Vista. Once it all works I will trash XP and use the old drive for photo storage. You can get a 250Gb SATA drive for $120 Inc GST now, so it's not a major expense, and I'm going to need more storage soon anyway.

Just don't rely on being able to re-install XP if you're using an upgrade licence, because my understanding is the key becomes invalid for XP after you've activated Vista.

2 1/2 days later, from 11am Monday. I've yet to hear back from Canon.
If I don't have my camera and flash, and battery grip back and working before next week, I will be very mad. That would then be 5 weeks, double the quoted time frame.
Busy or not, they should still be either emailing or phoning customers advising of the delays after advising of 2-3 weeks initially.
I understood last time my camera was repaired (broken shutter), it took 5-6 weeks, but that was over their closed 2 week period, so it wasn't too bad.
Canon NZ, are also terrible in their stock levels, and should stock small plastic moulds, such as my Off Shoe Cord, was broken, just one end, half side is broken, only need the 20cent piece of plastic, like a copy, and screw back in. Canon said they don't have any, so will have to buy a new one.
I finally bought one today from Nick at Auckland Camera - Another $121...
Canon NZ I don't feel are doing their part for maintaining their strong position in digital cameras in New Zealand.

Same level as shower which is about 5 mtrs away from HWC. Has valve under house and pipe out the top to roof for overflow
Hi Tony
Is the cylinder on the ground floor or 1st floor
What I am trying to get at is that low pressure cylinders have a max pressure of 7.6M (or about 25 ft) This means that you can feed them with say a tank 25ft above the bottom of the cylinder. If your cylinder is on the 1st floor and the exhaust stops above the roof, say 4 meters above the bottom of the cylinder, you can fit a relief valve on the exhaust to "fool" the cylinder into thinking it has another 12ft or so of available head. This wont work if the cylinder is on the ground floor of a two storey house as if you fit a relief valve in this situation, you overpressurise the cylinder. However, in situations where the relief valve is suitable, it does make a significant improvement in the hot pressure, almost doubling it (all realative, your dealing with low pressures 3.6M = 36kpa = approx 5psi)

and disussions of the new 1DS MKIII, and 22megapixel..
And the replacement 30D, or 5D, (may take the 16.7Megapixel 1DS MK II sensor).. logical.
So I've had many past dealings with him, and always been helpful, and cut prices off. But just not on a $120 piece of cable. :p
I've already emailed through, and the email I had from 3 days ago, had another person CC'd in.
This is different to the person I emailed a year ago regarding job application..

Well I'm off to Nelson next Tuesday for the day, kinda of strange going to work, hoping on a plane doing a couple of hours work, then flying back before the end of the work day!
Also get to fly in three different planes in one day, a Bombardier , a Saab and a old normal 737, shame I don't have a camera to do some aerial stuff, those Saabs fly quite low.

Because I am being paid to :D As for the cost of flights, the customer I am doing this for is AirNZ, so that is all "paid" for as well.

From this I take it that the cylinder is on the ground floor, which means that provided that your pressure reducing valve under the floor is adjusted to just "not" to overflow the exhaust pipe on the roof, you seem to working somewhere near or at the max. pressure. Doesn't help you out if the shower performance is not what you are after.
So, unless you want to try changing to a different mixer, not much choice than to change the type of cylinder. Any gas in your area??

I'm thinking be at Orakei Wharf or somewhere between there and the city by 6:30 at the latest to see the Queen Mary arrive. Sounds like it could be a bit of a show!

Canon response:
"HI Warren,
Sorry for late reply, we are very short staffed here at present.
It appears that your camera ( after the tech had done the estimate ) was accidentally put
On the estimate done shelf ( with out the estimate being done ).
I have pulled it out and asked Jess to do it but I’m afraid she didn’t get to it today.
( she’s been doing all the invoices and estimate by herself , we have had one admin girl
Sick for a couple of days and the other is on leave )
I’ll see if can get her to do it first thing tomorrow.
My apologies for the Stuff up.

I agree with Shrimper. Their staff levels are nothing to do with you, and using them as an excuse is very poor form. Get angry! Make them aware you're a member of the biggest Canon forum in the world and will be advising people change to Sony Alphas.

You guys are way to easy. I would be on the phone "Hello I dont mean to be rude but could you put me through to the general manger RIGHT NOW"
If they give you " Sorry he is not avaiable" ask the person you are speaking to for their name and their boss name , then ask for the person who is next in line under the GM
Dont think this works ask Microsoft NZ when they crossed me
The GM was a way and I got the next in line I had my issue sorted in 3 hrs.
Go for the boss and butts will get kicked all the way down the chain
