yes I saw it, the whole sky out west was orange, then look out east and there was 1/4 of a rainbow leading in to the refection of the sunset.

the worst part was I was down the back padock loading bales of hay and my camera was up in my room. By the time the camera was delivered to me it was all gone :(

Ok, I think im gona plan for next weekend, saturday perhaps, another trip to bridal veil falls. I need more!

Can I get a rough idea of who would be interested in coming? We can all split gas money, and abseil lessons / trips would be $50/ person to cover ropes etc etc.

Yup, It is a bargin your right. The two girls we gave lessons to said it would be worth about $125 /head for them. Which sounds about right. This is a POTN only offer - I will be charging more for others.

Well its Thursday and as I said after 2 days of rain Im back up to my waterfalls. leaving my house at 6pm with wife and kids. First stop falls at the dam. Then head off to karekare falls there and down to the beach for sunset. Bother has any one seen my 10-20mm cant find it.... Oh thats right its been tested, looks like 24-70 panorams.

Should be at the dam by 6-30 6.45 gone by 7.30 be at karekare 8ish.
and I better not hear any bletting from either my wife or my girls you come out with me then dont compalin about the weather or the long walks.

For those who may be intrested im getting into extreme waterfall photography. This is where you pick a stream and walk up it, sorry no ARC tracks avaible. You stop when you find the waterfall or the stream runs out.

Trying to get some satalite images and or arieal photos. After all I dont want some 2 ft waterfall after 4 hours walking up stream.

There is a purpose in this as Im planning to write a book on the waitaks waterfalls.

Looks like another decent sunset today, anyone have their cameras out?

I think that sunset was even better than the one the other night. I was on the Ferry home and had to force myself to sit back and enjoy it rather than stressing about not having my camera with me and missing the oportunity to shoot it. By the time I got home it was all over, but I scoped out a great spot to shoot from next time there is a good sunset on a still evening. Nice reflections off the water, and Mt Wellington in the background.

Anybody get any pictures tonight?

Got last nights sunset from Karekare beach. My home internet is down hope to have it fixed today. So internet at work but pics on home pc.

Got home at 10.30, wife and kids didnt want to come with me.... what a shame :)

I did the 2 sets of waterfalls, but I was "off" lastnight with waterfalls, the sunset shots a lot better. In fact I got one that I will print it has the WOW factor about it. On the way back I did a couple of The city from the top of the ranges, and they came out well.

Everything was very slippery so yes I was very carefull. A bunch of my books from amazon arrived, books on low light and night photography and 1 on exposure. Picking up some good points.

Mattl how the hell did you get someone to pay $450?

Wazza try berocca.

Im still tracking down sattalite maps for my waterfalls. The guy did say that if they are marked they would be between 5 -15mtrs in height if bigger they give the height of them.

Wheres this groups sence of adventure? Sure we could get lost...sure the cell phones dont work due to coverage area if someone falls and breaks a leg...... Sure you could slip and drop your camera in the water
but hey think of it this way, you get to take pictures of things over 1 million people in their life time will never get to see ;)

Very nice, thats a more than respectable sum for a photo :)

I was looking in craft world the other day, there are currently 3 photogs in there, only 1 I think is any good (one of them had prints with tilted horizans).
They selling a 5x7 matted print for about $40-60. A booth there cost about $120 a month, assuming people buy photos from there then 3 or 4 of us could afford a booth assuming we each sold at least one photo each a month.

Some nice pics there. That speckled forest light and helmet shades makes it difficult to get good exposures.

Your cropping might work better if you left space in front for the competitor to ride into, rather than space behind.

Are you travelling north to the Kona Colville Connection, Coromandel, in March? If so, introduce yourself to the race organisers. I fear I will be stuck on the finish line recording each of the 1500 competitors, while others get the helicopter rides to the mountain tops again! Damn.

The space behind is usually to show where they launched/lunched from.
I am finding I don't like close crops.
I like a story, like the spectators with their mouths open and eyes wide etc.
They can always be cropped later if needed.

Hi John,
I wish folks (that means YOU Ms Gatting!) would stop calling it Broadband. As Tim says the miserable 128K upload speed means it's nowhere near the rest of the world in terms of speed or latency - absolutely, positively third world.
I'm personally with Ihug, as they've never done anything to encourage me to move elsewhere - even though I work for Telecom and could get a "sort-of" package for free if I were so inclined. Every dealing I've had with Xtra on the other hand has turned to cr@p one way or another so I'll always steer as well clear as I can. What you'll find however is that it'll cost you $10 more per month to have ADSL with a different Telco than your existing phone tolls provider so facter that into your sums as well.
Hope this doesn't put you off however, as anything faster than dialup has got to be better for your patience. Can you actually get ADSL? I know a couple of guys who can't - one who's in a brand new subdivision which has their phone connection fed by fibre - meaning no ADSL at all... [/rant mode off]

Oh well if we are going to have a rant.........What about the copper no mater who you are with when there is a line fault. 6 days to get fixed. We pay for line maintance yet when was the last time you saw your phone line getting replaced. They come and swap over a couple of pairs. What happens when all the good pairs have gone bad?

LOL! Duncan, I've lived in the country too long that I've forgotten how fast true broadband really is.... considering that the Philippines is considered a 3rd world country

It is probably the main reason why I first chose dial-up... hoping that true broadband at affordable prices would be offered to the masses... Would you guys believe that my uncapped broadband connection in Manila then only cost some $40 a month?

6 years on I will have to accept that it will probably be a while before Ms. Gattung opens her eyes and realises that she is short-changing Kiwis by providing them with outdated technology an ripping us off with expensive fees...

Mumble, grumble, moan... Looks like I will be stuck with Xtra -- no way am I going back to Clear whose service sucks...

Cheers!

That was a big problem out this way for a short while a few years ago, but I had ADSL in one of those subdivisions last year, apprently Telecum just had to spend the money for the right gear to handle it.

Iv been with Xtra for bout 2 and bit years now, its been very reliable, and the customer service is fantastic.
They can be a bit slow to set up the connections though, and the $100 charge is just excessive when you know whats actualy involved.

Dgconer, I am outside the 3km-from-exchange limit they put on ADSL connections. They initally told me I couldnt get it, blah blah, untill I ranted enough and got them to install it on a 2month trial to see if it *actually* worked.

It does, but only just. I know you are very close to my house, so you may be outside the scope of ADSL as it is.

In Auckland there are wireless options that aren't available in the rest of the country. Wired County i've heard mentioned favourably a few times. Woosh i've seen and i'm not impressed with.

More on the Lantern Festival: PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Just got hold of today's Eastern Courier and to quote:

". . .This year a photography competition is part of the festival.

Photographers of any ability can capture images of the festival and submit them to the judges for the lantern exhibition during the Auckland festival of Photography in June.

Photos should capture the people's view of the lantern festival (duh?), show its development over time and highlight how public spaces can be filled in a public-spirited celebration of Asian culture in Auckland. (No idea what this is all about.)

Photographs should be sent to: Lantern 2006, Auckland Festival of Photography, POBox 147-095, Ponsonby, Auckland, or via the website: www.photographyfestival.org.nz by Sunday, 26 February."

Nothing said about prizes or picture formats... I'll hop onto the photography festival web site and check things out and post details.

Cheers!

Or at least find a list of all the deliverys that came in that day.

We have cameras covering everywhere at work, one of my staff backed into a company car the other day, she admitted to it first thing the next day, but we knew who it was very quickly.

No worrys Tony. They were all at 55mm. I could have done it in about 4 shots at 18 or 20mm, but it would have been pretty whacked and distorted. The longer the focal lenght the less perspective distorion in shots like that.

Yeah it was pretty white. Mechanic has had a quick look and says it is either the head gasget ($800-900 if the head and block are not damaged) or one of the turbos. If it is the one that was replaced 6 months ago it should be under warranty, or around $3K if it is the other one.

Anyway I decided what the heck, it's only money and bought a Sigma 70-200 off trademe for $700. Should arrive by the end of the week.

Scott, congratulations on your purchase!!! I've been saving up for one myself... I can now get first hand feedback from you regarding the IQ and handling. Now I just have to find myself a job!:)

Let's just hope that the busted turbo is the one under warranty... $3K is heaps to spend... and I probably now have an idea of what my wife's car repairs are going to cost -- I bought her '91 Legacy some 6 years ago... and they were telling me then that her turbo was sounding a bit off and that I might need to replace it...

Iain, PM isn't working. Not sure which threads you subscribe to... so I left another message on the GKPE Events Calendar thread too...

From what I understand (guys/gals, jump in if I'm mistaken) there are 2 versions of the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 -- APO DG & EX DG HSM, the EX being more expensive. Others in the forum (and elsewhere) swear that the APO gives great pics, but I would assume that the EX would do the same given that it is the professional version of the line.

Will PM you Femdvl's details when the thing is up and running.
