Hi
Looking for software to convert RAW 10d files etc. Trying out BB at the moment and looks fine. Capture One was going to take an hour to download, so before attempting the download can anyone offer advantages or disadvantages of one over the other. I know BB is cheaper.
Thanks
Emamb

Hi emamb

I've tried out BB2.7.1 and Capture 1 LE.

I find C1 much easier to use and great results too.

BB has lots of HTML generation capability that is superior to C1LE. Sorting and organising of images is simpler in BB. But, for me, C1LE produces better-looking pictures.

I use BB for one reason- the images are better. I know this flys in the face of common opinion, but try it for yourself. Download the C1LE and process the same pix with both. Look at the boundries of contrasting colors- I swear I see all kinds of noise and bizzare stuff there -with C1LE. I was expecting better. Interface- C1LE is it, but even at $100, It isn't worth it for me if it makes lesser images.

This is not a black and white issue.

I have both BB and C1LE. I use C1LE for most things. I use BB to copy the EXIF info from my CRW files to my JPG files.

Also, BB can be faster if your photos are taken in a controlled environment (studio or consistent lighting source).

If $$$ is a concern, start with BB and get C1LE in a while.

Of course this only makes sense if you shoot RAW.

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread a little - but does anyone know is breezebrowser has the capability to do exposure compensation?
TIA

Yes with BB you can compensate/ adjust the raw files for all the settings that your camera has for exposures- ie: exposure, contrast, white balance, saturation, sharpness as well as BB's smart noise reduction and a couple I have probably forgotten.

The main advantage of Capture One is the superior delineation of fine details, it's almost like getting an extra million pixels in my 10-D. To take an example: the rendition of a TV-antenna on a rooftop: With CO the thin beams are sharply reproduced without the fuzzy, broad lines I usually get with coverters based on Canon software. The operational word here is control, details seem to be under much better control with CO's algorithms than any other I've seen so far.
How important this is for you will depend upon the final size of yor prints. I regularly print Super A3, and in this format it's visible.
By all means load down the trial version and do some tests.
For color, CO seems correct but unexciting. Matters have (surprisingly) improved after I changed from AdobeRGB to sRGB.

Okay I did a test on Saturday. Wasn't out to do a test but what can I say.

I had taken a photo in available mixed light. The BB processed image was much too red and dark. BB does not do exposure comp in the same sense that C1 or Yarc+ do.

I then processed the image with C1LE and was able to get much nicer skin tones.

Here is the C1 processed image:

I don't have the BB image was I could not get rid of the red in Bob Lilly's face.

So I am back to using C1LE for most of my work.

Take care,

I've been using BB for a couple of years with my G2. Since updating to the D10 my pictures are not as sharp as I would like. Last night I downloaded a copy of C1Lite. WOW...What a difference, my pictures are much much sharper. Looks like I will be using C1 for raw conversions and BB for most everything else. Does anyone know the major bebefits offered by C1 Pro over the Lite version?

Full: save profiles; no limit on queue size (number of images waiting to be processed), some other features.

It is possible to avoid the queue limit by filling it to about 15 images, start it processing and continue on with adding images to the queue.

I like C1LE very much. I can work a lot faster in it than using BB and the PS to finish up. My work flow is now process in C1LE and size / crop in PS.

You don't have to wait to start processing, just use the key and add images after you have adjusted them. They are added to the queue and will start processing straight away.

Thanks. I knew that already. I prefer to load the queue up a little and then start processing.

The posts comparing BB and C1LE don't mention which conversion method is being used in BB ( Linear, Normal or Combined). I use Linear Conversion in BB with no post processing and adjust levels and sharpen in Photoshop Elements 2.0. The pictures are sharp and the color true to life. I've posted a few recent pictures on a web site in progress. The picture of Becky Hammond is ISO 800 taken from four sections off the floor at Madison Square Guarden with a Canon 70-200/2.8L. The rest are ISO 100 with either the 24-70/2.8L

BreezeBrowser 2.7 is my choice because it allows me to shoot RAW with my S50, 10D and 1D.Capture One does not work with other Canon cameras. I tried it (the LE version with some 10D files) and admit it works well but IMHO it does not do a better job than BreezeBrowser. C1 is faster and this is not an issue for me.
Chris Breeze supports his product very well and is constantly improving it.
