I own the 10D with a Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di and and Tamron 70-300 3.5-5.6 with macro setting. I'm trying to decide to pair up the long zoom with a 500D versus buying a quality fixed length macro lens such as the Canon 100 or 180mm.

Any opinions appreciated. Specifically, I'm interested to hear the incremental benefitis of getting a dedicated macro versus the 500D on my existing lens.

Thanks

Can't offer a comparison, but I do have information on the 500D that may be of interest:

Roger:

Thanks for the resonse. I had already read your article and the satisfying results you feel you obtain with the 50D which is one of the reasons it makes the decision for me even more perplexing.

I've read about the sharpness of some dedicated macro lenses and using them as a portraint lense (such as the Canon 100 f2.8 macro). Of course, that kind of argument now takes me back to the sharpness differences between zooms (I have the range covered) and primes. Right now I don't have any primes in my aresnal . . . just two zooms.
