I want to do some macro shooting, but on my eos d30 it will not focus on anything that I aim for, it just makes whirring noises. I use a lense which is 28-105mm. Please help!

Sounds like you are too close/thats not a macro lens...you need extension tubes, closeup lenses or a macro lens to do macro work properly.....the best is probably a macro lens like the 50 mm f2.5 Canon EOS lens...but I have had great success with a sigma macro too. You will probably pay $200+ for a macro lens whereas extension tubes are about 100(noncanon) and closeup lenses are less than $50. I've used all with success.

Oh right! I did not realise that I needed a macro lense to make it work. Ta!

If you are getting closeup filters (screw on), I would consider getting the double element ones (Nikon 5T/6T) instead of the Hoya cheap single element lenses.
It might not matter too much on your 28-105, but I know that my 100-300 f/5.6L really really does not like the single element lenses beyond 100mm. The picture gets all hazy and no contrast/sharpness at all.
However, the double element lenses don't cause this same problem. Canon's 500D or 250D are probably good too, but they are more expensive.
