I have the option of a 18mm - 55mm Lens or 28mm - 105mm lens.
The 18mm - 55mm is the one that came with the Rebel XT.

18-55. Trust me, your going to need the wide angle unless you have a FF. Just turn up the ISO if you need more light. This lens is not exactly the fastest of the bunch. ;) If you have a FF camera, I would bring the 28-105. Why cant you bring both lenses?

You really think I'll need that much of a wide angle?

28mm on a DSLR is like a ~45mm on a 35mm film SLR. That's just not enough for car shows. You'll probably want to get some wider shoots. The 18-55mm has my vote.

18-55 absolutely. At most car shows you're allowed to get close enough to the cars that the wide end of the 28 wouldn't be enough, and the top end at 105 would be way too much.

I asked the same question as I'm looking for a lens to do the same thing.
Here's a link to that thread:

I'm thinking the Canon 10-22mm or the Canon 16-35mm will work real good. I need one for in and out door shows.

I agree, go wide. I' bet you will be at the wide end of your zoom most of the time.

as everyone has said, your 18-55 will give you good results, during the CES show in Las Vegas, I used my 24-70 and it worked out pretty fine. enjoy!

I have a choice between kit and tamron 28-75, I think I'll just take both along :)
