The sticky thread at the top of this section is a good place to start.
With those lenses, your options are limited.

I read the sticky oc TC's but none of it pertains to what I ask.

I read about 4elements and ones with more but what I am mainly asking is what are my options to use with my 300D (possibly 20D soon) and the Tamron 75-300 f4-5.6 LD.

If you're going to use one, use this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&Q=&is=REG&O=productlist&kw=TA14XCAF&cpncode=12-5074115-2&sku=53109&srccode=cii_5784816

Not recommended though if you're looking for good IQ (with that lens).

I'm using the Tamron 1.4X, and I've not noticed any noticeable degree of degradation in the image quality...

I don't think you'll be able to use either the Canon or Sigma, so Ithat pretty much leaves Tamron or Kenko. I'd go with the Tamron, I think, but don't have an overwhelming preference.

Thank you for the replies, I will go with the Tamron.

I have the tamron 1.4x and it is okay with my 70-200 f4L. It does noticeably reduce the contrast and the edge sharpness deteriorates. You might want to try the Tamron 1.4 SP:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=185148&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

It says it doesn't improve IQ over the standard 1.4x for lenses with maximum apertures less than 2.8 but it also says that it improves contrast. It costs a bit more, but might be worth it.

Also, AF is not going to work very well for you at 300mm with the 1.4x TC as your maximum aperture is going to be f8. Ouch!

the tamron 70-300 isn't a bad lens, but it's not a great lens. image quality probably not good enough to withstand adding a teleconverter. If you start with a first-rate lens you can add a teleconverter without much loss.

that said, the cheap-o tamron 1.4x tc isn't bad either. See the t-con sticky referenced above, it contains a comparison shot between that one and the canon 1.4 which costs more than double.

I'm getting the 70-200 f/4L very soon and was interested in getting a TC to pair it in the future. I don't want to shell out $280 just for 80mm more reach (200mm becomes 280mm with a 1.4xTC). But at the same time, I don't want to lose a ridiculous amount of quality and AF speed for that much cash. What do you think?

Well, it is okay. For everyday use i try to avoid it since it seems to lower contrast. It might just be me, but I seem to get less predictable results than when I use the 70-200 alone. I'm not sure whether a different TC would help. I did take this with the pair however:

So, I was happy to have it along.

This article got me a long way to the tamron as well as the low price:

Jeez, that's some shot.
Can the decreased contrast from the TC be corrected in post-processing? I always shoot RAW as I've found that a single photo can be processed many many different ways. If contrast is an issue, can post-processing correct such things?

I can't do it without making it look unnatural, but then again I'm not an expert. I did a quick search for some examples and I'll have to do some more searching... I'll post some pics if I find an apples-to-apples example. If not maybe I'll try to take one this weekend.
