1. What haze/UV filter or skylight filter do you use on your best lenses? What alternatives to Canon filters would you consider on L glass? What would you absolutely refuse to consider?
2. I'd appreciate your comments about Canon filters, B&W filters, Tiffen filters, etc.
3. Does anyone NOT use a protective filter?
Thanks.

I use the cheapest do nothing filter I can find.
UV/Skylight etc. Can't see any difference between images with it or without it.

Multicoated Hoya filters. Would buy B+W as well if they were cheaper.

I have used Tiffen UV (non-coated in the past, when I was a student, and money was short. I tried multi-coated filters in the past and could not tell the dirrefernce, especially since I was shooting on FILM. But since then I have started using Hoya, super multi coated, and EOS D30, and started comparing images with the Tiffen (uncoated), and the Hoya (SMC), indoors, and using the same lense, same aperture, same focal length, same camera, and you can tell there is a difference. There is some difference in the brightness (that's barely noticeable to the eye), but looking at the pictures in a software after downloading, you can see shifts in colour in the Tiffen, but not so much in the HSMC filters. The filters I compared were Tiffen UV, and the HSMC Skylight 1-B, a slightly pink filter. Now I have heard that the HSMC also does not contribute to flare in bright sunlight, compared to the Tiffen, but I have not verified this claim. I hope this helps.
Sincerely, Y. Chachad, Ph.D.

sky on all, tiffen
does anyone discard the lens cap after getting a filter, or is that just for journalists afraid of missing shots.

I never use a protective filter; too much of things end up lowering the quality. I use a B+W warm polarizer for virtually all of my waterfall and folliage pictures. For flowers I use nothing.
When I get a new lense I buy the cheapest filter available and glue it to the lens cap. So to prepare, I have to UNSCREW the lens cap. Thats as much protection as I have needed...

Thanks to all. I am now leaning toward the multicoated Hoya filters.

I use B+W MRC on all of my lenses. Cheap spot to buy is hvstar.net. It's the cheapest on the planet!

I only use a filter for a desired effect.

HOYA SuperHMC Pro1 = 6 layers of multi-coating on each side for 12 layers of coating. 99.7% light transmission the most in the business.
As long as the filter is clean, you can't see the glass from most angles, there is no glare and few reflection if any at all.

OMG Zombie thread! * RUN AWAY *
The OP hasn't been seen for years and I doubt he's waiting for an answer so I'm closing this.
