View Full Version : Southern Ontario Get Together...

Well Folks,
In the spirit of several POTN meetings, I thought that those in and around Southern Ontario might interested in meeting up somewhere for a day of shooting...That includes you fellow shooters in Buffalo or anyone who wants to make the trip...
Those that I have spoken too have indicated that an early weekend in MAY...the location is still up in the air...
Let's hear what other's think...
Cheers,
KevC

I would also be interested depending on the time and distance of travel. Us Sarnians maybe could even car pool to the location.
Hamilton also has some great places for different kinds of shots (the Royal Botanical Gardens would be great in the spring, the African Lion Safari for wildlife, and they also have several really interesting parks and gorges).
Check out some of these links:

Being a native of the Niagara Region I'd love to come. NOTL and Niagara Falls both offer endless oppurtunities for breathtaking scenery. I've spent many hours in the Butterfly conservatory and the colors in their have to be seen to be believed. I've visited POTN less lately only because I've left my older Canon G2 behind in favour of the Olympus C-8080. If an Olympus user is okay with you fella's then count me in.

Greetings;
Nice idea having a splinter forum for this part of the World.
I am arriving at this thread rather late since it's inception, but I did rumble through the 4 pages of enthusiasm. I have lived in this part of Canada for 17 years and resided in Alliston, Nobleton, Toronto, Hamilton, Fort Erie and now London.
For an easy day out with photography in mind, you would be hard pressed to beat Toronto. I mean just pick any subject matter out of a hat and it's there. Buildings, people, street cars, buses, railways, water, boats... it is endless. I feel if folks are willing to come all the way from the US border and 2 hours drive within Ontario - that Niagara Falls would be a commercialised and expensive disappointment.
It may sound more romantic to suggest Niagara Region... but it is essentially hectares of grapes and a casino. I have lived there and it is a beautiful place to reside. Plus we got 6 weeks less winter than say Stratford or Kitchener LOL... but for photography, have folks travel so far for that single reason... would be a let down.
I recommend Toronto for it's resources and variety of subject matter. Everyone could walk a few blocks either side of Yonge Street and have photos to work with for months. It's Toronto... all you have to do is look up.... waaayyyyyyyy up.
Yer Cousin (partially Canadianised Scotsman)

WHile I agree with you, I think the general consensus is Niagra...unless others who have voted for Niagra change their mind...
However in the commercialized ugliness that has become niagra there is certainly an editorial story to be told and I think the presence of many photographers may well be able to capture how a beautiful natural landscape has been reduced to a lesser version of Vegas...

Cripe, I don't care what the heck we're shooting or where we're going. No matter where you are or what you're shooting you make the best of it.
That's the one thing I've learned living in this crap-hole of a town called Sarnia. Slap some tubes on and take some macros or something and you won't know where you are.
To me, this is an opportunity to meet new people, to chat about photography and maybe share/learn a few things.
I know I have some tricks up my sleeves, and I expect others have some too.
All I know is that in October I'm heading over to Belfountain slash Calegon (up Hurontario half way or so to Orangeville) to drive slash walk down the Fork Of The Credit road.
We went 2 years ago and were blown away. It's really nice there with the fall colours. Everybody must go!!

(just kidding)
Hey, nice sig... but you forgot to mention that there would be more murderers.
I'd rather do a landscape/nature outing somwhere and DT Toronto doesn't interest me. Plus we'll get contant agrivation from the homeless for spare change being seen as a moving party worth over $100K.
Plus, in nature, like the waterfalls shown above, we can satisfy the animal lovers, macro lovers, and landscape lovers all at the same time.
Personally, the destination won't change my decision too much, but Toronto doesn't interest me at all (down town or the islands)

Well as a annual pass holder to Hamilton Conserv. Auth. areas I'll vouch that there's a lot of potential in the area and Hamilton is home to an abundant amount of waterfalls including Tews Falls, which at 41m is a few metres shorter than Niagara Falls in height. Spencer Gorge, home of Webster Falls has some stunning gorge scenery (http://www.conservationhamilton.ca/parks/visit/spencer.asp)
Another option, though beyond botanicals and people it might be limiting is the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington (http://www.rbg.ca). I'll go anywhere but would rather stay away from the centre of the universe if possible.

To elaborate on the Websters/Tews Falls suggestion. There are a lot more waterfalls in the general area (http://www.conservationhamilton.ca/parks/visit/Waterfall_links.asp) as well as other sites that folks might find interesting to shoot. We could gather back at Webster's Falls as there is a fireplace/BBQ pit and public picnic area so we could wrap up the day with a BBQ. I'd be willing to get grocery provisions and we simply pitch in a few bucks each. Might be a great social way to end the day.

Thanks for the PM Mark. I've updated my initial list to include your 3 guests.
I guess I'll just maintain the list there since nothing else has been done.
If you have a change to the list (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=1223799&postcount=84), please send me a PM and I will update it.
I'm not seeing many votes considering we have around 30 interested parties... get voting for Symes.

List has been updated... and sorted.
Please review the list and send a status update if needed (are you questionable or for sure?)
I've been asked by more than one if "there's room" to add them to the list. I'm just maintaining the list so we all know who could be involved. As far as the "room" goes, we might look a little silly all walking around with above-standard cameras... but I don't think there was a limit.
Actually, there's SOOOO much interest here, logistics might become an issue. We might have to split up or something.
Also, make sure you follow symes' link and vote on the location.

This is getting a bit too complex IMO
The people who want to go to niagara should go there. On a separate date, the downtown group can go too.

Maybe simple for you since you live there ;) Maybe we should do downtown

Thanx Dave for aiding the cause of truth and reason.
First, Danny boy needs to be corrected: I never wear my King Kong slippers anywhere but within the confines of my library. As well, for the same reason, I do not walk my pet fish Goering around our home while we have guests. People are quick to judge elderly by their less than cliched behaviour around here. In Britain, they treasure their lunatics. In N.America, they get institutionalized and discretely ECT'd. On the Continent the asylums are used to get all kinds of undesireables outta print, universities and off the streets.
The solitude of lake Ontario is safety assuring.....until the summer when non-descript hordes of Canadians start to invade its increasingly befouled beaches.

Indeed, while in the Toronto area, would you folks mind participating in a little peaceful demonstration at Canon's Sevice Centre in Mississauga ? You could form a little picket line, carry placcards and chant some simple words of disapproval such as "Canon..can you do repairs?", "Canon, come on !" and "Canon.....hard on our gear !". The subject rally could be rendered perfectly legal if a prior notification of it were made with the Peel Regional Police Force, so they could have a few mounted officers on hand just in case a scuffle should erupt between Canon employees and POTN photographers.
I should be happy to provide some hot tea to the picketers.

I'm interested. I've already voted (Webster Falls for me) and I'll be sending my PM. My only suggestion is that, where ever we decide to go, someone in that area is going to have to man up and get some location planning done. There's SOOOO many people that seem to be interested, I think it would be a shame for us to all rally together for a "now what" session :D.
Anyway. As I said...I'm in. See you all there.

Then we can work on plans and groupings. I have a feeling there will be several people interested in this outing and it'll be hard to move in such a large group.
