I have done some tests to compare the Canon 70-200 4L with the Tamron 28-75 at 70 mm. I have used a tripod, mirror locking, and shoot from the PC using remote capture. The following pics are 100% crop jpeg directly coming from the camera, without any post-processing. For each aperture there is a crop in the center and a crop in the border. There are 12 pics.

It's hard to believe it but the tamron seems to me slightly better than the canon L !!!

The pics are here (http://bellik.free.fr/Tests/Tamron%20Canon%2070/CanonTamron70mm.html)

Well I just recently purchased the Tamron and the Canon is next on my list.... (after a battery grip) They both look pretty good but the Tamron looks like the winner to me :)

The tamron seems to have a colour shift after f4?

I compared my Tamron 28-75 to both my Canon 70-200 f/4L and my Canon 17-85 IS EFS against test patterns a real scene. I also had someone else compare their Tamron 28-75 and 18-55 and we exchanged files to compare with one another (there was some doubt in the other guy's mind about whether he had a good or bad Tamron). And another guy compared his 24-70 f/2.8L and Tamron 28-75.

Conclusion: Tamron equal to any Canon L in the test, and Canon 17-85 equal to all of them them as well(!) -- in spite of seeing uncomplimentary writeups about the 17-85 in a number of places.
