Auto ISO question

I have just bought a G5, but I understand operationally it is very similar to the G3.

I don't understand how the Auto ISO works. The manual states that it adjusts when shooting conditions limits are reached, but I can't find anywhere that delineates these limits.

Does anyone know what the Auto ISO logic path is?
