View Full Version : selling G3

After much consideration I have decided to sell my new G3 and go back to either film or buy the D10. I have added accessories and such, all to try and achieve the workability I already had with my EOS1n.

Although I think it is a really fine camera, its limitations are just plain, annoyingly unlivable...if that makes sense!

Great learning experience though!

RedShoesGirl,

Exactly!! Get the 10D, you will be delighted and never put it down.

RSG:

So what were the major issues that are leading you to sell?

I'm still most unhappy w/autofocus, which cost me some shots this weekend of a woodpecker, and yesterday of the kids playing...occasionally it just will not lock (%&$^#%@).

Dana,

For me the autofocus and choice of lens. I loved the camera at first, then I noticed that I didn't have the range I wanted and focusing was always an issue. Action shots were not possible the way I wanted. The price of the 10D is much more but I think it is worth it.

NiL,

By the time I added the filters, the extra battery/charger, wide angle converter and considering the tele converter, flash and that thingy that allows you to look at the LED like a viewfinder - it just isn't that much less than the the 10D - which can use all my EOS lenses, flash and probably operates much the same as the 1n.

My biggest problem was the LED screen - just could never get used to the screen thing out in the bright sun. Couldn't see with my prescription sunglasses on, couldn't see it with them off in the bright light!

I really need a TTL viewfinder!

RedShoesGirl,

Well, when you upgrade, make sure you get a 550EX Flash, it works much better with the 10D.

You will love the 10D and not even remember your G3 days.

Whats up people? Yes, the 10D is probably a better camera but you are comparing apples to oranges. I remember when we all got the G3...oh the memories! Everyone was so happy then.

Now y'all trashin my camera! LOL

i'm still quite happy with my g3 and live by the philosophy that it is the photographer not the photo equipment. not that i have no complaints but that i try and figure out how to best live with what i have, since i already have it ;)

Oh no, not at all! Really I think it is a cool camera. But I am an old girl that is used to shooting SLR's and DSLR's and so the limitations were just something I couldn't live with. I do love the ability to do IR in camera though, without the hassle of IR b&w film. That stuff is a pain.

I am concerned with the ease of making images, that's all.

The image is made 6" BEHIND the camera, so any ol' camera will do and I can make, what I think, are good shots with anything.

It is the ease that I can do so that makes a difference now.

RSG, I think you're kidding us.
No way you're an "old girl".
No matter what your age. :-)

Ahhhh, Jack, aren't you sweet. You are right, old is in the mind...and I am 10. :-)

heavens no! I didn't think you sounded snotting at all. And what you said is the truth - it isn't the camera but the photographer.
I never get offended by what I read on the net...or for that matter, by much of anything at all! :-)

lara,

re your statement that you rarely are offended:
then perhaps you are an "old girl", in the cosmic sense of the word!

best wishes on selling that camera. what i would like (in my dreams for the time being) is the nikon d100.

Uh Oh!

Now you called her "old" ;)

Now there is bound to be trouble! :D :D :D

What was this thread about? :)

I would love to own the 10D as well... but only as a companion to my G3 and not as my one and only camera. I just can't picture myself carrying a camera that big everywhere I go. The G3 is small enough to bring along anywhere and not be a burden - not to mention it produces great quality images.
Just my $0.02.

Exactly....believe me, the 10D w/a couple of lenses makes the G3 w/a tele and wide adapter feel like a Canon S400. :-) No way the 10D is going to fit into my fanny pack along w/my mini-DV camcorder while I'm skiing, and I wouldn't want to miss any shots of my wife in a particularly embarrassing position after a fall. ;-)

satnitefever,

That is TOTALLY NOT THE CASE. G3 is a GREAT camera, I am extremely happy with it. That doesn't mean, I can't want a 10D. I think the 10D has more to offer and since they are NOT in the same catergory it is not fair to compare the two.

G3 is great and I am so glad that I purchased it!!

I went to the local camera store near my home town and looked at the 10D to see what all the hub-bub was all about. WOW! what a beautiful camera. A little out of my price range, but none the less it is a beautiful looking camera with a great feel.

The 10D is an awsome camera. But since it is out my price range I will be staying with my G3 for some time. Which is a great camera.

Well it's done. Sold that is. I took a loss, but also in the deal got a Canon Elph. Just the size I needed to go in my backpack. Now to save up for the 10d!

Hi. Am I missing something? Did you say you have sold your G3 and still have not purchased the D10?

Yes....I am going to stick with film for a little while longer in order to make the hit on my pocketbook not so hard, since I did sell at a loss. The camera dropped in price so drastically in the six weeks since I first bought it I was afraid that if I didn't sell now I wouldn't be able to recoup very much. My reasons for buying the G3 were strange at best...looking for a backpack camera and then got carried away by all the wonderful things I learned that the G3 could do. What it couldn't do, was take the place of my EOS and no amount of accessories could make it achieve the same funtionality. And it was silly of me to expect that it would.

As for the D10, well, I am still trying to figure out if I really NEED that camera. I have a Nikon D1 that I use for work, that is too big to haul around hiking! The D10 certainly isn't a hiking camera and neither was the G3. I couldn't afford to keep it just because it was cool to play with, if that makes any sense.

In no way am I denigrating a fine camera, it just wasn't a perfect fit for me and my needs.

Hi, RedShoes,

We all take quite a loss selling electronics!! Did you sell it on E-Bay or to a friend/colleague? I'm guessing you got $400 or thereabouts, because many mail order people have dropped it to below $500 already.

I'm NOT buying a 10D. My dream SLR (yes, like you my next camera will be an SLR) will have:
8 megapixels
2.2 or maybe even a 2.5" LCD (1.8 is just too small...though I love the SLR way, LCD is useful like when the thing is on a tripod anyhow, for a portrait, and makes the subject more at ease)
9 point autofocus at least in auto mode like the S50
infra-red focus assist and not that beam light.

Any other wish list items you can think of?

Friend and I threw in all the accessories I bought. She is thrilled!

Hmmmm, the ability to do IR. Stitch assist was cool. Is that on the bigger cameras? I use the LCD for checking exposure since I rarely use the D1 on a tripod.

I actually like the 1.6 magnification. Makes my long lenses REALLY long and I have a wide-angle that gives me at least a 24. The 10D has the full 35mm aspect ratio doesn't it?

Hi,

>

Me personally, I would like an SLR digital to have the same focal lengths for lenses I use from 35 mm but I'm sure that won't be the case. I'm not entirely sure about the 10D.

The 10D has a focal magnification of 1.6, EOS 1D = 1.3 and the EOS-1Ds has no magnification so your lenses will be the same as with film.

I understand the motivation, and have the same feeling. I'm not satisfied with my G3. Autofocus problem, week sharpness, bad color.

By the way, I can get good quality using different kind of software. But I wanna camera to do all this stuff instead of me.

I also was thinking about D10 until I've found original test images from

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/10d_samples.html

Look at that images - are they really good? Better than yours? Bigger, I coul say.

Maybe, Sony F717 is a solution, I don't know. Or maybe we just have to wait for few years for a new technology.

I didn't have any problems with these issues at all! I turned off all the sharpness...I want to control that myself in the imaging program - each image is different. Landscapes need different sharpening than portraits for example.

be sure to read some of the comments in the digital photography newsgroup - lots of poor press on the F717 - not nearly as good as the G3.
