View Full Version : can't focus on quick movements???

I've had my G3 for about a month now. Got away from the "Auto" mode setting.
Usually mess around in "P" mode with different combinations of indoor and outdoor shooting, saving in C1 or C2.
My question is, what is the right comibination for action shots outdoors (i.e. kids on a merry-go-around, soccer game, nascar, etc).
Most of the action shots would be in the daylight.
Tried the Tv and Av settings, but it just seems still out of focus.
How can I set myself up better? Keep on Tv or Av modes and increase the shutter or appeture? Something else?
Thanks!

perhaps there is an G3 FAQ on taking action shots or someone has the settings that I should be experimenting with?
appreciate the help...
PS should I also be on that "H" continous setting instead of the regular continous setting (what looks like the 3 overlapping boxes in the LCD)...guessing the two second delay is NOT the right option :)

I wil tell you what I would do...Go to the search area and type in "action shots" There are many useful threads out there. I use them all of the time.
I personally learned about Hyperfocal by utilizing the search tool.
I am not being snotty in any way and I am not trying to belittle your question. Using the search can give you quick answers.

You'll want a faster shutter speed... the hyperfocal method described is definitely one to consider, but you might be able to get decent results out of TV/AV/M modes too.
AV is really a good mode... I shoot a lot with it. For the shots you describe, a smaller aperture (larger f number) will help you get good DOF, but might also slow your shutter speed down too much... Try a few shots with ~f/5.0 - see if the shutter is quick enough to catch your action and go from there - it all depends on the light around you, the speed of what you are shooting, etc...
