Capturing, and how it is slowly killing me. Please god help!

When I first purchased my G2 I was running Windows ME. Capturing images was easy: a nice little program loaded, no lag, let me highlight the pictures I wanted easily, and save them all to a specified folder, where automatically subfolders would appear for each days stock. Fantastic.

I have since changed to Windows 2000 Pro, and although I feel the OS is better in most respects, it has made using my G2 hell. No longer does this nice little program load for me (possibly a feature of ME), nothing loads at all: no program's seem to help, and Zoombrowser is just terrible: keeps crashing, very processor intensive (although I do like the previewing of images). The bottom line is that if I want to save a batch of images, I have to either use zoombrowser, or that terrible image capturing prog that I assume came with the G2 software (not Zoombrowser, but an ugly and slow windows-like program), where I have to save EACH IMAGE INDIVIDUALY. This is actually putting me off using the camera, which is insane, and probably down to my lack of knowledge of how to correctly and easily capture images.

If anyone knows of a free third party program I can use, or even could shout at me for not using ZoomBrowser properly, and tell me how, I would greatly appreciate it.

Please, I really need some help!

Have you tried going to the Canon website to see if there are any downloads to fix the problem? Just a thought.

I'm using 2k pro with the zoombrowser and haven't had any trouble..other than I don't really like it but it works. Did you use the version for 2k or xp? I think there is a difference. Also there is an upgrade at the canon site for zb.
On the brite side there are a number of good 3rd party progs to use. I appologize for not providing links but I'm sure if you do a search you'll find many. Try the SOFTWARE section of this forum.

I am using Zoombrowser on windows 2000 without problems.
May be a card reader will help? (USB or Firewire if you have hardware)

I was just to Canon's site yesterday and there is a new version of Zoom browser, I can't remember what OS it's for, but there are several patches etc. there.

Strongly strongly strongly recommend just using the free Downloader from Breezesys. The very recent Pro version has a couple of nice additional features if you'd use them (esp. in the realm of how files can be named during download).

Very simple. Very easy. Very fast. Zero problems. It can even create text files for you with EXIF data (ISO, aperture, etc.) if you'd want to keep track of such things.

The totally free version is at the bottom of the following. I really can't recommend it enough:

I may be wrong.. however I do believe that ME and XP both use WIA drivers for capturing images from scanners and cameras whereas Windows 2000 still uses Twain drivers. Your upgrade may still be trying to work with the WIA drivers which I think are no longer supported due to upgrading from ME to W2K.

I think you may need to install the twain drivers for your canon camera into your w2k installation. They should be on the original CD. There may even be info about this in the readme file.

Xp even has a native driver and you can download into Explorer. I use ZB, because it is Canon native, to download, but do everything else in Photoshop Elements 2 or Corel, depending on complexity.

This is a problem that can be wrestled to the ground with Herculean effort. Or spend 20 bucks on a card reader and be done with it.

I haven't use Zoombrowser since the day I got my A80 three years ago. Who needs it?

I use the old, free Downloader also, but I haven't been able to find a live link to it for a while. I just hit the site again, and still don't see it, even at the bottom of the Downloads page, as suggested. Am I missing something? I'd love to recommend this to folks if I could give them a link--it just works.

I'll echo Lefturn99--a card reader is a huge improvement over downloading from the camera. Combine that with something like Breeze Downloader or DIM:

I've never used its media detector/downloader, but it's a free program, and is worth it just for lightning fast viewing/searching your images.
