Hi all,
seen some great stuff here, lots of inspiration and good ideas. Thought it about time I posted my first image to see what you guys think. The shot was taken up in the Blue Mountains just west of Sydney Australia. Its early morning around 0800 (after a long walk through the bush) and the whole area was very damp and covered in moss. I wanted to capture the atmosphere, in particular the rich green in the moss and ferns which were everywhere. I framed the shot to capture the rock shelf to the left and the large tree top right which had fallen into the pool.

Anyway, see what you think. Hope the image quality is ok after I resized it down to 467x700 pixels and 106Kb.

Tech details: Canon 350D, EF28-80mm lens, Velbon tripod, RS60-ES release, file format large jpeg, SRGB (note: I am now using RAW and Adobe RGB)

cheers

Doesn't seem to be a picture loaded or link to a picture.

Thanks Peter,
bit of a stuff up attaching the image, was a tad over the 100Kb limit set for the forum. I finished up using an external photo hosting site and linking to the image. I'm guessing that most forum members would use this method.

cheers

I like it.

Do you have a larger version of it we could link to?

What camera settings did you use (cos I like that water effect).

and lastly....

how long a walk was it? (I live in Sydney and was going to head up to the mountains for some pics).

G'Day Kiwibloke,
I do have a larger image but I have tried to stay within the forum guidelines of 800x800 pixels. Camera settings were Manual Exposure, f22 at 30 seconds, ISO100 and Auto White Balance.

Finally, this site is not easy to get into and I would advise that it not be attempted without some basic topographic map reading ability and a reasonable level of fitness. However, if you check out the National Parks Office at Govetts Leap Lookout Blackheath, (which has an absolutely stunning view) they have loads of maps which detail lots of waterfalls.

Thanks Bob.

The reason I asked about the larger version of the image is that a lot of the people here put larger versions of their images on 'external' sites and just post the url of the image so we can go look at it on the external site (and it doesn't break the size rules for here).

Fine on the requirements for that waterfall - I think the fitness one would knacker me :)

We plan to go get pics of the Three Sisters and the vertical railway sometime.

Sorry but I have to climb back on my pet 'hobbyhorse' here - I don't like photos of waterfalls taken with a slow shutter speed. The 'silken sheet'effect is not how the eye sees a waterfall - it should look turbulent, cold and wet i.e. just as it really is !!!!!!

Otherwise a nice photo - can you go back and do it again!!!!

Nice shot Bob. I too live in Sydney, although it's been nearly 20 years since I've been bushwalking up in the Blue Mountains. I like the colours, and I like the flowing effect of the water.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys, very encouraging. While I am relatively happy with the shot I do think that the shutter speed was a tad long at 30 seconds. I suspect that I could have traded some depth of field and opened up the aperture to reduce the shutter speed. This may have given a bit more detail in the water fall. I intend to reshoot this image in a few weeks and it will interesting to see the result.

For anyone who is local, if your up that way you should check out Leura Cascades. Well worth the five minutes walk from the car park.

cheers

Welcome Bobscape. Got to drive thru to Orange in the morning.... One of these days I'll have some time for waterfall shots, but got to get a ND filter first. Payday soon.
