I have been gradually getting freelance work using my G2. At this point I am ready to make the move to a 10D, I know this camera is really sweet and know that my work will only improve by upgrading. I have my first wedding gig lined up next month and I would like to have the 10D in my hands within a matter of 2 weeks.

My question is. Would these lenses be good enough to use for wedding portraits?

Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens

Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens

Also does anyone recommend getting 420EX Speedlite TTL Shoe-Mount Flash as well?

I already know that I do want a battery grip, and thats not an issue, issue is getting the right lenses and trying not to go TOO overboard with this purchase, as I am on a limited budget in purchasing this camera.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

For wedding shots I would use the 50mm 1.8 EF because it works out to 80mm in digital terms and from what I understand, most wedding photogs use 80-110mm. The 1.8 is a real bargain also and has a very good aperture for natural indoor shots. I don't know if the 420EX speedlite is totally necessary for wedding shots but I would think so. Also, for any outdoor shots, a fill flash is almost required and the 420EX would be an asset in that area. I have never done this type of work but from the posts I read, I would say go with the 50mm 1.8 and just get closer or farther away for the shot. Of course, any "L" series lens would be fantastic, especially the 50mm 1.4L but that will set you back quite a few hundred. The results would be stunning though. Another choice would be the 24-70mm 2.8L but again, it is very expensive.

I suppose if you are not doing real professional wedding pictures or are just starting in it, the standard USM lenses would be fine, but to really set your work apart from the rest, go with the "L" series!!

I shoot weddings and use the 28-135. It works just fine except under low light ..it doesn't focus real well. I take time exposures from a tripod and don't use it much because it is slow. I think the two lenses used would work fine for a wedding but the 20-35 usm would be a lens that I would have to have if I shot weddings very much. You need a wide angle for groups and the 28 mm x 1.6 is not very wide. Formal group pictures are the most important pictures for most couples and make up the bulk of selections for reprints. I would not shoot these with any canon flash. I use a white lightning flash unit on a lightstand about 9-10 feet over my head. You get no red eye, no background shadows and simple great light. I don't use an umbrella either because this gives you too much of a specular highlight from those wearing glasses. I've done this this way for the last 20 years with no complaints. See Paul Buff or Alien Bees for superb lights at a low cost.
