I have tried using a 3rd party slave flash with my G2. Every time it came out underexposed - worse than using the onboard flash alone. Can anyone tell me why? Can it be remedied?

hello
use it at M mode only not at P,TV,or AV .because the g2 use ETTL will fire at two step first pre flash and then main flash so your flash slave fire only one time at first pre flash not at main flash

hihi,
I have a Mecablitz Telecomputer 20BC6 flash.
Will it work properly with G2?
G2 is TTL right? Must I get a TTL flash too?
Advice please

no g2 is ETTL
if you use other flash (non canon EX serial) you must set your g2 to M and WB to flash and adjust the aparture and speed proprely.this set up will be confuse but you have no choice

Spuddy, how did the solution work for you? I'm thinking of getting a slave flash for the G2 without the expense of the EX series. Which one do you use and where did you get it from?

I think this is what you need. It's $99 (kind of expensive but it's still cheaper than two 550EX), and it works. All you have to adjust is the flash compensation.

Thank you for the info. However it is not available in Singapore. The difference in cost plus frieght is S$50 difference from that of a 440EX.

Dear northface,
Using manual definitely works. However it is a bit troublesome and slow to get the settings before you shoot! I am still looking for a flash as the G2 is my 1st Canon camera. I am having few Nikon & Minolta cameras.

You can get a slave receiver that can trigger your second flash unit, even with the pre-flash. It's made by Wein and it's called a "Digital Peanut". Your second flash needs to have a cord with a PC connector to plug into the Digital Peanut.
The only problem is this: The camera CANNOT control the output of the slaved flash, and you are very likely to get an overexposure condition. You can set the camera for up to two stops of control (you will likely need the minus direction), but it's just as much trouble - if not more - than using manual mode for setting up the exposure.
If I need multiple flash units, I generally use manual mode and connect one flash unit to the camera (using a hotshoe-to-PC adapter) and slave others off that. There's no double-flash going on or anything, and all I need to do is either meter the flash and set the camera or use the camera as a meter by experimenting and looking at the histogram for a reference. By the way, I do this all the time with Alien Bees flash units. Works great.
If you still want the camera's flash to be the primary trigger, but use manual mode, look at the "plain" Wein Peanut. The "plain" Peanut triggers on the first flash it sees. It's the "digital" version that triggers on the second flash it sees
