Hi guys,
I'm another proud owner of the g3, and just found out about this forum.
I'm getting a teleconverter for my cam next week and I was wondering which one to get:
Canon X1.75, Tiffen Megaples X2, Olympus T-con, Kenko or anything else.
I'm leaning towards the tiffen because of the extra magnification and the lower price.
Canon X1.75 - 110$, 58mm thread, X1.75 magnification.
Tiffen megaplus - 71$, 43mm thread, X2 magnification.
What's you opinion?
thanks,
Roie G.

Roie,
I too was in the same boat as you a couple of months ago. Yes it took me 2 months to make a decision. the first thing I learned was that cost, although important, should not be the deciding factor. Quality construction and quality of photos should be first on your mind. You have one of the best cameras in the world dont comprimise!
I am getting the TCON-17. It has the 1.75 mag. but the additional .25 mag. of the Tiffen really does not make a difference. The best thing for you to do is to do a search on Teleconverters in the forum. You will get great information from fellow members along with great links to access. The links offer comparisons of many different teleconverters.

Dujie,
Thanks for your reply.
So, while I was thinking between the Tiffen and the Canon Teleconverters, you brought up a third option, T-con by Olympus. I must say I didn't realy think about that option seriously.
can you post a photo or 2 shot by the T-con?
Maybe I should go for the T-con.

Actually I am unable to post right now. I have been having problems with connecting to the internet. I can however lead you to two sites that have compared teleconverters and their sharpness. (see below)
Make sure you check out the link to the teleconverter thread I posted for you. There is very good information in there.

I purchased the Canon DC58N a few weeks ago and am kicking myself in the butt for waiting so long to do so. It takes incredibly sharp photos. The difference between the Canon and the others IMHO is that Canon uses much better glass and your photos will benefit from that.

thanks fir the links, but I've already seen them through this forum.
Tim, can you post some photos you shot with the canon teleconverter?
are there any more opinions about teleconverters from users?
thanks a million times,
Roie.

Hi,
I have the Kenko tele-converter and I'm happy with it.
I have found, however, that unless I zoom out to about 3x optical zoom, I get serious vignetting.
Looks like this adapter and lens is only useful when using full, or nearly full optical zoom.

Here are some links with Teleconverter tests and samples. I haven't decided which to get either, but I'm leaning toward Canon (15 year Canon addict, I guess.)

This was taken using the Canon DC58N from approximately 100-120 feet from the subject. I think it's pretty darn good :)
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/800
Av( Aperture Value ) 4.0
Metering Mode Center-weighted averaging
ISO Speed 100
Lens 7.2 - 28.8mm
Focal Length 28.8mm
Digital Zoom x 1.4

Just to chime in on this topic.
I received my Olympus Tcon-17 today to find out that it also vignettes unless zoomed out 2/3 full. The pics are very crisp and clear. I just hope it is as usable as I first imagined.

Michael, which size adapter are you using?

Thanks everyone for your comments.
in the meanwhile, I see that there is no decision which one is the best...
so I'll pick between the T-Con17, DC-58N, Kenko and tiffen.
Perhaps the difference isn't that big if everyone is sattisfied with what they own...
Thanks again,
Roie G.
