I'm interested in getting a flash for my G3. Most of the discussion on these boards has been about the 420 EX, but I've picked up that the Sigma EF-500 Super DG is compatible with the G3, and pound per feature, gives more than the Canon Flash. Can any one offer me any advice on this one?

I'd simply, say, NO to any generic alternative to Canon's fabulous EX line. Especially the 420 EX.

Same here. I can almost imagine Canon's devilment bureau releasing a firmware update that would render the third-party offering useless. Not too likely of course, but still... give me the real deal: 550EX (or the 420EX).

After spending the last 2 weeks reading about flashes for my G3, I ordered the 420EX.

I just bought the 420 EX last night. I a telling you know that an external flash makes a hug difference in the quality of picture compared to the onboard flash. I know they each serve their purpose but so far I could not be happier with my new flash.

Dujie:
Now what you need is a Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord2, to be able to have the flash off-camera and yet have E-TTL. I just love it! Plus I bought a lumiquest.com flash light softener, (I bought a Big Bounce but an Ultra-Soft might be easier to handle, and you'd need a cinch strap as well)

judging from strings on the digital EOS forum sounds like the Sigma EF-500 Super DG is performing fine for cameras like the D30 and D60. I would think it should work fine for a G3 as many of the features sited as being missing in the EF-500 likely wouldn't be used by a G3 anyway.

I'd like to find one in a store and give it a try. Anyone have access to one in a local shops to give it a try in there show room?
