The messiah returns... :p ;)

Ok lets get this discussion into one thread rather than spread out across four like it is now.

I'm up in Auckland next weekend, i'd like to meet up with all you guys for a drink or something on Saturday (11th Feb). I'm thinking a few hours Saturday mid/late afternoon or early evening, as I have plans to go out in town sat nt, and i'm pretty busy the rest of the time. The two options for location seem to be Scott's place (thanks for the offer (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=127033)) or in town - either my hotel or a bar nearby (i'm staying in Quest Hotel on Queen St). My knowledge of Auckland consists of driving towards the sky tower or follwing the little plane signs to the airport, but i'll probably have a lass along who knows the city quite well.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Availability?

I suspect i'll be in Auckland more regularly for a little while.

MattL
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 05:26
Where does Scott live? Im sure its closer to me than town. I vote for his place.
Its easy to get out this way.
You take the little plane sign exit from town, but instead of going to the right under the motorway, you keep left and go thatway.

I think I'd like first dibs on this monitor calib gizmo - Im about to spend half a grand on couple of big prints, imagine if the colour was off! :S

tim
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 05:35
$250 each for those prints? That's gota eat into your profit margin!

I don't really mind if we go to Scott's or go into town, if it's at Scotts i'll probably just arrive a little earlier and leave a little earlier so I get into town at the right time :) Pretty much anywhere you go in Auckland involves a pretty long drive I figure...

MattL
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 05:39
$250 each? not quite - Im getting 4 printed, and each with different mounts etc etc.

Moppie
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 11:56
Ill also put in a Vote for Scotts, since its so close to so many of us, and I would also love to have a play with your calibration gizmo.

iKirst

I'll go where the masses suggest...

dgcorner
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 15:33
I can walk to Scott's house (I think...) or I can take 3-4 people into town if they don't mind squeezing into the car... whichever suits.

Now, do we take a plate each, drinks and stuff? Sorry, I'm still trying to figure out the Kiwi thing to do... it just changes so much from house to house, and from time to time ;-)

tim
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 15:37
If it's at Scotts house i'll not be drinking because i'm driving... which isn't a problem... i'll have a "few" drink later that evening...

Since it's a short thing i'd probably say bring what you want to drink, and snacks if you want any. Up to Scott really. I think Scott said he had a pool so bring something to swim in if you like.

I know BYOC is a given, but that only feeds the creative sides, not stomachs or bladders.
Perhaps we're all big enough to look after our needs, eh ;)

DId any of you see that flap with someone posting one of CharlesU's pics on DPReview? http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=132849&highlight=Charles

The culprit apparently is local... but an ex-POTN member... Wazza, MattL and I managed to put our 2cents worth in it... and sent our apologies to CharlesU... Moppie, Scott, the guy lives a few minutes from us...

EDIT: OOPS, why is it that I'm always 12 hours late... or something.... must be having to do with being married and with kids...

MattL
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 16:23
Yeah I saw that. He has an xtra email address in his profile on DPR.

John I think its about time I got off my ass and came down to meet you. What do you think?

dgcorner
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 20:11
Yep, it will be good to meet you considering that we're neighbours!

Just say when... I still have a week of baby sitting before the kids are back in school.

Cheers!

I kinda figured that I'd miss stuff like this when I got married and had kids... not that I'm complaining ;-) There are perks and then there are perks...

Have fun, keep safe and bring back some pics.

Hope your shoot went well. :)

Would be interested in seeing the shots on the forums.

I have thousands of images from the past few days to sort through.

I have to edit 200 pics and print, and pay for a nice album for my sisters 21st, and tonight I MUST edit another 100+ pics from an engagement party I photographed on Saturday night.

I was also confirmed as being the photographer early March next year in Rarotonga... Trip all paid for (only one who gets free trip and accommodation ;) plus pretty decent payment ;))

And also in the rest of the spare weekend, was driving around Auckland with Kirst meeting her mates, photographing fireworks, Muriwai sunset, Matakana.. Oh dear, way too much to sort through.

(aside)

I had a really odd dream last night. Someone gave me a full manual medium format film camera to use, and one roll of film to play with, with no more film available. I remember having my light meter (the Sekonic I actually own), using it, and taking all sorts of photos... with my little brother as an assistant.

All the Kiwi threads seem go to off topic in the blink of an eye...

Hey back to the original topic, how does that sound to everyone? Scotts place, maybe mid to late afternoon, going until perhaos early evening? I'll go PM Scott to make sure it's still ok.

Right, I Just got back from Hunua.

That was awesome. We decided to get wet this time, and came right down the middle of the waterfall. That was intense! When we got to a few meters off the water, I simply unhooked and fell into the water. Swiming with a full body harness on is an interesting experiance :D

Next time, You lot are *all* coming, I want some good ass photos!

Simon, not sure how many cards you have but have you thought about a portable storage device? It comes in very handy when you're out and about.:)

I have 2 512mb Pros and one older 320mb CF card that I take around with me. All I do when one if filled is pop it onto my 10gig portadrive and shoot away with the last 2 cards.

To date, I haven't managed to fill up the 10gigs.... though used up about 8gig during my holidays in Manila where I took about 1500 pics...

Cheers!

Bach ;)

Matakana was a spur of the moment drive to retrieve my Sony Camera from my friend, Simon (not forsaken) at Stargate Lodge (http://stargate-lodge.co.nz/). Wazza took the opportunity to run around the B&B and get photos, then geeked with my Simon for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages, while I reaquainted myself with the Sony functions :p
Wedding in Raro - possibly another in Fiji at New Years.. Busy boy

Hey don't want to be a drag but can we please keep this thread on topic, and use the general ramblings (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=131484) thread for other things. I'll have a mod tidy up this thread, to make planning easier.

Yep my house/pool/bbq are available and you are all welcome - byo camera, alcohol, and meat.
Although if the weather is no good we might want to make alternative plans as my place would get pretty crowded if we were all stuck inside.

Thanks Scott :) Since most people are in that area i'll let someone else suggest a rainy day location, perhaps a quiet bar around there. If all else fails i'll come up with a location but it'd be central city.

Central would be much easier for you anyway?
Then there's a mini pub crawl, and fairly even for everyone. Probably takes most 20min to get to the city from the various locations, East, West, North..

MattL
31st of January 2006 (Tue), 23:06
Centrals not a good idea for a rainy day location, we'd have to drive, park, then walk a mile in the rain!

I'm happy to have you lot at our house as a second venue (Sandringham- quite near St Lukes) Same rules as Scott's except diving will be discouraged - we don't have a pool. Or should I say diving will be at your own risk and probably photographed. House isn't that big but we've kinda two lounges.

I would take Kirst along as an assistant if she's willing! Two camera bodies for yourself would be very helpful, Kirst with a 3rd would be great. Turn your camera off machine gun mode otherwise you'll be editing even longer than I was! You'll do great. Just study things like posing groups - large groups, small family groups, and especially the wedding party/couple pictures.

I am yet to see photographic evidence to confirm he was there.

I have a shot of him with hammer in one hand, 20D in the other. At least I think it was him...

lol, I was hiding in the corner ;) Thanks for the hospitality Scott, and it was great to put faces to the names. Pete, those brownies were great! There were too many people at the lantern festival to come find you, plus my girl wasn't feeling very well so we left early. I'll be in Auckland a bit more in the future I think, and there's a chance i'll be doing a bit of contract work there in a month or so. Hopefully we can have another get together when I can hang around for longer :)

I love the pic of my finger with the preying mantis, can you email that to me Matt? Or gimme a link to download it. I'll post some pics soon, i'm pretty tired.

Yeah, was that taken with my macro?

120-300 Sigma + 1.4TC IIRC.

Yeah, was that taken with my macro?

I think it was taken with Wazza huge lens.

Edit - Matt beat me to it. He just told me it was 420mm, f4, 1/800, iso200.

Here's a random photo taken of my girl at the lantern festival - she was talking to Wazza on my phone trying to work out where everyone was! ISO1600, 50mm, F1.4, about 1m max from her - the photo is about 6 stops overexposed because the flash couldn't go dim enough, this is with EC-4 in RAW.

The effect actually works quite well!

Yeah I was pleasently suprised. You can see the parts of the image that are closer to parallel with the sensor had all channels limit and have gone white, the rounded areas still have a little skin color :)

Moppie, what was the hole in the first pic for? It looks nasty...:)

Its one of my first custom mods, a hole for mounting an ND filter useing some light springs so it would move with the lens.
I now use a differnt method of mouting that is less intrusive.
