Hi there,

I got a canon 10d. bought a tamron 28-200mm superzoom f/3.8-5.6 Aspherical XR IF Macro.

AT last a lens that focusses well with the eos 10d. But i have another problem.
I get color halos around objects when i use the lens at 200.. i have a crop of a pic here:

http://www.egocat.com/tam/tamron.htm

are those halos also visible with canon 28-200 usm and sigma 28-200?

thanks
thierry

I purchased the first incarnation of that lens several years ago. The lens is currently used as a paperweight in my office. I found it to be too soft to be useful to me. I also found lots of Chromatic abberation. That is what you are seeing in that image. There are various photoshop tricks in order reduce the appearance of these abberations. The one I have found to be useful is this.....Use Replace Color to select the green abberation and change the color to a netural grey that matches the edge where the Abberation occurs. If done correctly it will at least minimize the appearance of The CA enough to hopefully make the images useful.

In my experience "super Zooms" are anything but super.

I hope this helps.

Good luck to you.

I have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di. I've been real happy with it . . . sharp, fast and the AF works well with the 10D.

well it also got a very good review in germany in the "foto magazin" it was rated "very good"

and i also see that it got the : best lens from the Technical Image Press association in 2002

the autofocus is very good on it.. compared to my canon 50mm 1.8 and my sigma 24mm 1.8. with those two lenses it was more like playing the lottery to get sharp images.. the tamron gives sharp images ( but a bit soft at 200 if the subject is far away).

but what about these Chromatic abberations??
any chance i won't have them in a canon 28-200 or a sigma 28-200?
i can still take my tamron back to get my money back.. but i dunno what other lens to buy...

I think you should test the lens at different focal lengths and aperatures. Look at the results and decide if your happy with it. If you are unsure, return it while you can. I recall seeing a little purple fringe in one of my shots with a Canon 70-200 f/4L at 200mm. I was zoomed way in on the computer screen though and it was very minor, as I think yours is.

You might want to look back at some of my previous posts concerning my experiences with Tamron lenses. I first purchased three lenses on the recommendation of my camera shop and had similar chromatic abberrations along with focusing problems and soft focus. Tamron 17-35mm, 24-125mm and 70-200mm. ALL of them, especially the longer lense, showed some degree of chromatic abberration. The halos captured using the Tamron 70-200mm were by no means minor.

Coming from using the Olympus E20n, this disturbed me tremendously. All of these lenses went back to Tamron along with some example photos for evaluation. Needless to say Tamron indicated the the 70-200mm lense was defective and that they were having focusing problems (in low light they said). I've seen it in low light (especially) and some in natural light. I won't post the pics, but if you give me your email I'll send you a few samples of what I sent Tamron.

Tamron made a deal with my camera shop and I got all of my money back for the lenses. Since then, I have only purchased Canon lenses. 24-70mmL and 100-400mm L IS. The satisfaction factor has increased 100 fold. I love these lenses (I should for the extra $) and wouldn't go back to Tamron. I might consider a Sigma 17-35mm, but the Canon 24-70mm L has been wide enough for me right now.

The next lense i am eyeing is the 70-200mm f2.8L IS lense. I do a lot of sports action shots and this lense would be perfect for those late afternoon early evening shots that my 100-400L IS is not fast enough for.

Anyone know where I can get a deal on one? :)
