With the weather being warm enough for me to get outdoors. I decided to cross the river today and go to the Palmyra Cove in NJ. I had already spent nearly 4 hours of looking around with no luck. Was just about to leave when a man whom I had met earlier on some of the trails, came running up to my truck. He was very excited and asked if " I wanted to get some shots of the Saw Whet?" He didn't have to ask me twice and off we went. After about 20 minutes of a very fast pace walk we arrived to where the Saw Whet was roosting. These little guys spend a big part of the winter at the cove if the weather isn't terribly cold. Lucky for me he was still there and hadn't headed out for his night time hunting. I got around 30 shots and thought I would at least post one here. Haven't had the time to work on all of the shots yet but here's one for starters. Not the best but I was very happy with what I did get. He was maybe 6" - 7" tall at most, I felt like holding my hand out to see if he would hop on my fingers. But his talons did look a bit sharp to attempt that stunt. :D

WOW, they're here??!! I've been meaning to go to Palmyra Cove soon. Those little guys are TOUGH to find. I looked last year with no success. I looked in nearly every honeysuckle tangle. What lens did you use for this? I imagine a long lens is unnecessary for these birds. Great shot! I hope he's still there if I go next weekend.

Yes they migrate to the Cove if it isn't really cold. If the weather is good again this coming weekend I'm going to go back and try to get some shots with a tripod. If your interested I could show where he is roosting or you can try your luck. Either way I will be there to get some more shots. I used a Tamron AF 70-300mm. Thank you for the compliment, glad that you liked it.

Hey thanks for the offer! I am going to the Winter Eagle Festival in Cumberland County on Saturday but I can make it to the cove on Sunday. Do you think you'd be there on Sunday? If you are it would be great if you could show me where this little guy was found! Let me know what you think. Thanks. Bob

Sure I could go this weekend, as long as I get back before the game starts Sunday evening. Let me know what you think. I can send you a pm with email or vice versa. So we can get the time set up when to meet at the Cove. Weather permitting of course.
