hey guys

My name is jeff fenn. I am very poor graduate student that spends all his extra time and money on photography. I just so happens that I spend to much money on photography. I have been trying to come up with some ideas on how to make some money off this spectacular hobby. What do you think of these ideas

Put a flyer at the dog park for pet photography,
Hand out flyers at some local sporting events, baseball, soccer, paintball, carshows etc
run an ad in the paper for senior photos

I really want to start making some money from this hobby and I am not sure which way to go. If someone has been in this position before please lend me a hand.

thanks alot

Check with some of your local car clubs. I would agree to show up at some of the events and take some "event" photo's for the club at no charge (not individual cars), but stuff for the club. You could then set up a "stage" where you could shoot some pics of the cars and offer them for sale.

Just one thought..

I am in the EXACT same position as you...a starving Grad student who spends too much on his hobby..:)and what I did was contact some local youth teams and said..."I am putting a portfolio together and I would like to include your team." Offer the coach a nice momento and then send tell him their team will receive very good prints that they can buy for a "discounted rate." I had three teams respond right away and a fourth has recently responded. I am shooting extra team pictures for my portfolio and I am shooting action shots...now I have to do all the PP and showing up for free but I have started to see some business come my way. I won't continue to do this, but this is the way I am getting my portfolio together and making a little on the side.

Cheers,

You gotta approach your possible future clients. They'll probably never step forward, so go, take shots, and then approach the team, club, company, newspaper or whatever by telling them you'd like to get into the photography business, and also show them some samples.

Often works out, especially if you're new and unknown, but your shots are good. If they like it, they'll go for it. Tell them you'd work for a bit less than a hired pro would do at the beginning, so you get into the business.

That's the way I started some years ago... and worked damn well, now that I'm looking back.

thanks for all the info guys. I am going to try and find out where and when my local sporting activities are. How did you guys find out where and when your sporting events were. I think that I will just go to a bunch of the fields and indoor sports places.

anyway thanks again

Jeff,

just showing up a field and taking pictures can land you in some pretty hot water if you are not careful...taking pics of youth sports, when you haven't discussed it with the coach, or the tournament organizers can lead to some to places you don't want to go...I highly suggest you step back and chart out a plan of attack, just like you would any of your research!!

Go to your local High school & tell the coach that you want to learn. Don't try to sell at first 'till you are confident that you can deliver in all situations. Then, when you do, don't sell cheap, either! ;)
