...on the ID or family of this fly? It looks like a miniature crane fly with a body length of about 6mm. It was running around on a counter top in the kitchen while I was cooking last night.

These are about 25% crops. Sorry that they aren't as sharp as they should be :(

Look pretty sharp to me Al, excellent captures.
Suspect it is a wood gnat of some type (these are non- biting ones)- I've seen and shot similar ones known as "window" gnats.

Brian V.Thanks Brian. I knew someone would give me pointers to this beast. Googling "wood gnat" led me to fungus gnat on this page (http://gardensafari.net/english/mosquitoes.htm), which I think looks more like my beast than the wood or window gnat. Interestingly, on the same page I found out what we refer to as "bar flies" is a "moth fly" which is some kind of mosquito:

Like the added pic- that's a weirdo. Interesting- think we hit the same page when looking at wood gnats- I read the description of that thing- never seen one though- how long?

Brian V.Thanks Brian. These have a wingspan at the widest point of about 5mm. The horrors have taken to breeding in the runner groove of the sliding door on my shower. They have larvae exactly like mosquitoes (well, I now know they are mosquitoes :D).

Hmmm, maybe the larvae could be a photo opportunity... :p
