I hooked up an old Canon 533G Speedlite (from my A-1) to my 20D and it appears to work in Manual mode but, no matter the setting I use, the flash compensation sets to -2 and is flashing. Has anyone had this issue?

My understanding is the 20D etc only support E-TTL and manual flash, TTL is not supported, so all flashes ending in EZ back only work in manual.

Here is a link with all you wanted to know about EOS flash and a lot more besides http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

At least I could not aford Canon flash kit in my old FD days so that is one area where incompatibility is not an iritation.

Thanks for the link, Lester - I'll check it out after work tonight. I'm not looking for this flash to automatically sync with the 20D, just limited use in Manual. Can't understand the flashing flash exposure compensation though. Perhaps the link you provided will explain. :)

Check the extra contacts on the bottom of the flash. Some of them may be positioned the same as an EX's would be. Tape over everything but the big center one and the edge one. BTW - this is a flash question. Moving it accordingly.

The camera is not flashing FEC. It is merely indicating that with the f/stop opening that is set and the shutter speed at the level that is set, it will underexpose the photo unless you provide flash as a source of light.

I'll give it a whirl. Thanks!

Mea culpa - I've been here over a year and didn't even know there was a flash forum.

That makes sense also. Thanks for pointing that out.
