View Full Version : Pro 1 Write Times

I know the Pro 1 image files are larger than the G2's, but... it's taking an incredibly long time to write RAW files to my Sandisk Ultra II card. Is this normal?

Sometimes I can take two or three shots in succession, but then I hit photo #4 and we're often talking 8 seconds. At other times, this slowdown will happen on the second photo. And you can forget about continuous shooting.

In several recent cases I've resorted to JPG and found the write speeds much, much quicker. Is that what everyone else is finding?

For four years I've shot exclusively in RAW, but that tendency is fast disappearing.

Thanks for the input.

It is slow on my card (same as yours) but maybe 4-5 seconds. I hardly use RAW on my Pro1 for that reason and when I do shoot something in RAW, I use my 20D.

Hi Maureen,

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I was disappointed when comparing my experience with DPreview.com's values under "Continuous" of
• (Low speed) 1.0 fps, up to 18 frames
• (High speed) 2.5 fps, up to 6 frames

But now that I read it again, I realize that they give you no resolution or image type (JPG or RAW), so the figures are meaningless.

I think I've just entered the world of JPG for much of my candid shooting.

Cheers,

Don

I actually just tried this. Took one single shot, let it write, then went into continuous shooting and snapped off 4 in a row, at which point it went into "busy" mode, and then took perhaps 20-25 seconds to write the 4 images to the card. I as well am using the Sandisk Ultra II 1gb CF card.

Making it essentially useless.

Fortunately, the camera does a good job with JPG. Thanks very much for doing this comparison for me. Much appreciated.

Dear Don,
On my G5 with a 128 MB Compact Flash card by SanDisk, it takes approximately 5 seconds for the blinking green light to finish after shooting a RAW frame.

Cards speed does matter on most cameras. My first Canon was an A75 and it would blink three times before it finished. I purchased a 45x transcend card and it blinked 1 and 1/2 times. It seems to me that it was almost twice as fast. I was happy. But the card can only speed up the save time. Since this is only part of the total time, it can certainly provide less speed for other cameras.
