extender EF 1.4 problem

just tried my new Extender EF 1,4x II on my 20D with my 70-200 f4 L and the lcd shows an aperture range of f11 - f91 instead of the stated f5.6 to f45 also the AF isnt working at all rather than just slowing down. Any ideas what the problem might be?
I get the same whan mounting on my 350D. I don't have any other compatible lenses to try but my 70-200 works fine without the extender.

turned out contacts needed cleaning so alarm over. They looked so shiny it was hard to believe they could be contaminated.

I do all my best shooting @ f/91... of course,. I do my best shooting on the surface of the Sun :lol:

You will lose an F stop with a TC on the 70-200
