Can anyone give me the name of a good 1GB microdrive CF manufacturer for the 10D. I would like to find one that writes fast, accurately and does not zap the strength out of the battery. Please give the Internet address of sites to purchase the drive.

Thanks,
WSpruance

First off,.. :)

Forget you ever heard the term "MicroDrive"

They were a great inexpensive alternative to Compact Flash, but at the present are no longer cost effective. More susceptible to damge and now costing at least as much as, if not more than a Flash card,. they are of no use to any one now.

Compact flash cards on the other hand,.. are pretty much all the same. Some cards are rated for faster speeds,. but this may not have much effect on your "in camera" use. They will take advantage of any high speed card reader you may buy.

Lexar is the Number one recomended,.. after that I have used Sandisk, Viking, SimpleTech, and Delkin with no problems. But they are all pretty much the same.

A one gig card should be in the $200.00 range,. with 512 about $100.00.

Try www.newegg.com

And get a Card Reader! Much less hassle than plugging the camera into the PC :)

Well, that depends mostly on the country you live in.

Here, a 1gig-Microdrive costs about $200.- (sfr. 260) and a 1gig-SanDisk CF-Card $353.- (sfr. 460) normal or $460 (sfr.599) for the ultra-version.

So, I'm still happy with my 2 Microdrives I use since 2 years and which failed never on me.

But I agree regarding the Card Reader: Get one - either Firewire or USB 2.0

Pfn.

Ha!

It never occured to me that the price difference would be so great elsewhere?

Sorry :)

For the record,. I have nothing against Microdrives!
My only point was that when they were introduced,. they were the preferrred option because they cost a fraction of what a 1 Gig flash card cost. For some odd reason,. they have not gone down in price nearly as fast as the flash cards have.

therefore,

-IF- the two are comparably priced,. it is a better bet to get the flash card :)

Actually the cost for a Microdrive vs. a similar speef CF, the Microdrive still wins out even here in the states. Not by as much as before, but still a significant amount of $$$. Note that is for a similar speed CF, not some bargain basement cheap junk.

And yes, the disadvantage is that they are sensitive to shock as it's a hard drive and not a static memory chip like the CF. I have two microdrives and love them. I do love my 30x 512 Transcend card better though as it's much faster.

My next 1gig card will be a straight CF and not another microdrive.

Thanks for the answer. I have heard other good comments on the Transcend Card. Do you have an Internet address to purchase the Transcend Card?

This is a great site: http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/

They have the 30X 512 Transcend for $125 US. The 1 gig is $235 US and the 1gig Microdrive is only $179.

WSpruance,

:) Quite a pedigree :)

I worked with a relative of yours,. I won't post names on the Forum,. but She is a Theatre Director... worked at A.R.T. in Boston among other places...

... and of course know a good deal about both of your ancestor's Navy history. I was allways a bit of a Navy buff and have relatives who Served with your Great Uncle.

I must admit I had yet to see a Microdrive go for less than $230.00 or so,.. $179.00 is a more convincing argumnet. But personally I would rather have a $200.00 flash card from Viking or Delkin etc... and not have to be as concerned about damage from impact...

...but thats just a matter of preference.

Also, that Dane Electric 16X at 218.00 looks like a pretty good deal;

:)

I was referring to a 1 gig Flash card :) They can be had for under $200.00.

512 cards go for about $90.00 around here.

If you want to know which is faster check out the results at dpreview.com. I was looking around the other day and saw the ol microdrive was actually pretty fast in a D30 but was i the bottom 3rd in the 10D.

I purchased the Viking 1MB card at: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000083DY0/104-1238948-9123919
as per another recommendation posted on this site. I have been using it with a compact flash adapter in NC for a week and have no complaints. While the camera is still writing to the card in Raw mode I keep shooting and then review the images on the histogram. I am happy with this card and the price.

My thanks to all who posted here.

Go to Crucial.com and order their 512 mb CF card, it is every bit as fast as my two SanDisk Ultra 256 mb CF cards.

Price is very good as well.

Crucial is a first rate memory company with top rate service and fast delivery.

I had a Dane Electric card and it did some crazy things on me not to mention losing a whole bunch of images at a wedding reception. I haven't had any bad luck with other brands such as Kingston,Simpletech,Lexar and Sandisk. One image from the Dane electric card was half solarized and half normal. I stay a mile away from them now....I may have had a lemon but I'm not going to try another.

Rob Galbriath's site also has an extensive database on CF card speed.

I have 2 1GB MD cards and they have served me well on my D30. I am looking for a Solid-state CF card when I get my 10D. One draw back is, MD card does not work well at high attitude, which I don't have much access fttb. :)

BTW, Rob Galbraith's site also has an extensive performance chart for each camera body.
