I would NEVER use a filter that wasn't. That's just asking for problems with your image (flare, etc.).
More than likely, you don't really NEED a filter for "protection" anyhow. Reasonably careful handling and a properly designed and properly mounted lens hoods provide all the protection I have needed for 40 years plus.

skip's right. don't waste your $40 on this. if you must get a filter, go with multi-coated thin UV's by B+W or maybe Hoya.

im not worred about lens flare. i shoot a lot of concerts from inside the "mosh pit" and i have people flying all over me, spit flying everywhere. my camera even got hit with a mic stand last night. i just need something that will protect my glass while im in there.

Not too long ago, someone on the forum told of a lens that was damaged by the shards of glass from a shattered filter.
I think in your situation, I would look into a lexan filter or something along that line if you can get one that's optically flat enough. At the very least, contact the filter manufacturers and find out whether or not they make something designed for impact resistance. The paintball photographers would love to have one of those too.
I would also strongly suggest mounting the protective filter to the lens hood, and not to the lens itself (the filter mounting ring). The hood is mounted to the non-moving outer shell of the lens and can take a LOT more impact than the front ring of the lens without imparting forces into the delicate inner works of the lens assembly.

You might want to get an additional hood so you can use the "bulletproof" one where you need it and a regular one - probably without a filter - for more sedate photography.
