I bought my copy in early 2003, after I got my first DSLR, a used D30. Have been using it since. Although I use a kit lens ( non-IS ), plus a Sigma 17-70, followed by a Tamron 17-50, in the end, I still use it for a walkaround.
The picture here is a beach at Pantai Kerachut in Penang, after hiking one and a half hour through the jungle....

Couple of new ones from tonight, pretty cold out so I thought I'd update my sig from my XTi and nifty to my 1D and 17-40. I was messing with flash hence the bluish tint, but I kinda liked it so I didn't try to correct it. These are exported from Lightroom without sharpening or any adjustments, the second could use some brightening as I was bouncing behind me, but I'm impressed with these shots! I don't know, what do you all think?

Haha, yeah, those would help quite a bit. Out of the whole sequence though I think I spun that 430 the whole way around and then even off of the ceiling! I think I'm gonna get a 580 EX II first and then probably work on the wireless triggers and such. We'll see though as more of my shooting is football and baseball and then snowboarding.

lostid,
I personally would rather use my 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 lens for landscape photos on my 40D then my 17-40L However why do you need to see unprocessed photos? ??? Different lighting, situations, camera settings etc.. etc.... could still affect the photo.
The 17-40L isn't a new lens and has been around for a few years now. No major complaints about it either (from me) and it earns its L title.

13th of December 2008 (Sat), 13:51
I think most people shooting L glass are gonna be shooting raw and it won't be something you can judge the glass on. Really what should be a factor is the stuff that's going to be dependent on your shooting style. Do you need faster then f/4? Wider then 17mm? Longer then 40mm? I just picked up a 17-40L and love it. I don't think IQ can be questioned on it since it's a proven piece, colors are great and for what you get in a fairly wide zoom, it's well worth the price IMO. Would 7mm wider and half a stop be nice at times? Yeah, of course. But I'll take the price and the extra zoom any day.

Thanks to both of you for the comments. I know the built quality of the L lens is superior to other non L lens. I was hoping to just see some of the out-of-the-box shots to give me a glimpse of the picture quality comparing with the ones produced by my sigma 17-70.

I was intentionally bouncing behind me trying to get a sort of backwards glow without using triggers and hiding the flash. Sort of just testing it out. I was pretty impressed with how sharp it was though for being lowlight and relatively low handheld speeds.

yes, but IMO IS is not needed for the focal lengths involved. It would add weight to a wonderfully portable lens. Tripods are still useful, sometimes. ;)

hey guys, does this lens come with a hood or not?
It does, but it's the same pie plate hood that comes with the EF-S 10-22mm, and thus is useless on a 1.6x crop camera. I picked up the hood for the EF-S 17-55IS and use it on my 17-40L and it works great. It attaches securely and doesn't shake/rattle around. Nice & tight fit.
FYI: It's the EW-83J hood that I'm using on the 17-40L (instead of the EW-83E that comes with the 17-40L)
These tthree links (below) have pictures of both and great comments/details about switching hoods.

I bought the my copy used from a fellow POTN Member so I can't say 100% for sure. I asked him when I got it and he said one was for FF and one was for Crop. I never thought to ask if that was the way he got it or not.
So I have the regular EW-83E and the EW-83DII as well, for the Crop I use the 83DII
Was that new in the box? Or pre-owned? If new in the box, what hoods did you actually get?

here's my thread with pictures of the 2 most popular hood options:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=558590
the CNs boil down to buy the 25-105 hood. It mounts easier (has the spring bits over just friction) and requires less trimming. The bonus for me is the same hood fits the 24L, 17-40 and 24-105. I've kept my 24-105 hood BNIB and bought one before I had that lens for the project.

Haha, lostid, I'm not sure if you are thinking about this lens and want to be convinced. But as long as you don't need the speed of f/2.8, this lens is awesome on my 1D MkIIn. It is sharp as a tack and delivers some really unique perspective.

Mine is so sharp I can hardly see the difference between f/4 and f/8

I bought mine used from a fellow POTN Member and it was in pristine condition and sharp as can be. I do understand the hesitation but here you can always ask for pictures taken with it. I can't remember what I paid for mine exactly I believe it was just about $500.
You can always check Craig's List too, I've been seeing a lot more "L" Glass up there over the last few months.

Yeah sorry for the price difference, I bought so many things this year I lost track :-)
Anyway I've bought two lens off of Craig's List and wouldn't rule it out. I got my 70-300 f4-5.6 IS and my 100mm f/2.8 Macro. One was complete with boxes and all the other was just the lens. Thankfully they are both sharp copies...
I'm very happy with both of my purchases.

Indeed - the D-03 is nice, I played almost every guitar in the store before my last purchase and walked away with a Larry D-40, 1/40 made, much bassier than the D-03 and extremely martin like in tone. It was so good I even bought it with a blemish/ding in the top, which I struggled with. Maybe I'll take a few shots with my 17-40 and add 'em here.
