I picked up this lens to go with my new 50D and to say I am satisfied would be a VAST understatement. The first shot of the bench has no PP other than converting to .jpg. The second shot had some small adjustments in Lightroom.

I guess it all depends on how much lower light shooting you do. The on-board flash really doesn't work well with lenses physically larger than the kit lens (it leaves a shadow in the frame if you go too wide, even with the hood off).

I really like the 17-40L though! I do a lot of outside landscape shooting and its a wonderful lens. I did some shots at a wedding reception over the holidays with the 40D & 17-40 using the on-board flash and was really not happy! I'm still kicking myself for not buying a Speedlite (I ordered one a couple days after the wedding as a result). Lesson learned :o.

Every once & awhile I find myself wishing it was a little longer, as the gap between 40 & 70 is rather large. The versatility of a zoom is really nice (compared to a prime), but at the same time, try using your 18-55 only in the 18-40mm range and see what you think.

If I stay with the crop format, I'll probably pick up the 17-55 IS f2.8 one of these days, but I'd REALLY like to move up to full-frame and make a 24-105 IS f4 my primary lens.

Also, be sure to check out the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It has a large following, +10mm and one stop faster, and runs about $395 from B&H. Great lens as it's practically an even trade with your 50 1.4 (give or take $50).

p360
22nd of January 2009 (Thu), 22:56
Your 50 1.4 can do things that the 70-200 f/4 won't. They both have different purposes.

If you want to get rid of your kit lens that bad, and you can afford to upgrade to 17-40, then by all means, do it. This is an excellent lens, from what I've seen and heard. I have no idea how good (or bad) your kit lens is.

I haven't been able to test my 17-40L yet; it arrived two days ago, and I don't have a camera body to shoot with. I've sold my 30D, and still waiting for my 5DMII.

jcp2000

i know my 50mm can do better work in lower light then my 70-200 and blah blah blah. but i do not have the money to get a new body and new glass. since i want to go from my xti to a 40d. im am feed up with the build quality and the small size of the xti, since i do have big hand.

also i have played with this lens before and i think its a awesome piece of glass. i just dont know what to do... aha

guess it depends how much low light shooting you do. I recently did a wedding with my 70-200 F2,8L (non is) and the 17-40L. I used the 17-40 for all the group shots outside and some at the reception with flash. The 2.8 did the majority until the light go too low for it and all shots were hand held. The 17-40 did a good job with and without flash. If you feel you would get more use out of the 17-40 and are not doing too much low light stuff Id get it. Its quite a versatile lens and very sharp

although I dont use the 17-40 that often it does take nice portrait shots in the right situation, this one was without flash in the shade

If you're not using the 50 too much right now, it might be mostly due to the fact that the 70-200 is the newest toy in the box - I think most people go through that with new lenses, I certainly do. That being said, you'll probably go back to it (the 50) sooner or later with a greater appreciation of what it can do vs the rest of your line up. All of this leads to...

As much as I love the 17-40 (and it spends the most time on my camera, out of all of my lenses), if I were you, I don't think that I would give up my only fast lens for what the 17-40 offers over the kit lens. If sharpness is the problem, stop down on the kit lens for a few months while you scrape together a little more coin for the 17-40.

you are doing great, believe me, if i can do great in lighting and have that decent shot then this Dave Hill will not be so difficult to do, he is using a filter with some photoshop steps, i did some pp on some great shots and found that with a good shot to start then it is not so difficult to get his effect, i am not like some people who doesn't look deep and accurate on all of his shots to find out how to do it, and think partially or with half eyes, if i am really very good enough in photoshop then i can do his style so easy and beat him with different new style maybe, but i am a photographer not a photoshopper or graphic designer.

The 17mm shot was from a 40D, not a FF camera. The 17-40 on your new 5DMKII will give you extremely similar results to your 10-22 on crop camera. I could be wrong, but even when the 10-22 is modded I believe you can still hit the mount with the mirror if you accidentally hit the shutter button when you're not zoomed out, expensive mistake. I'd rather use the 17-40, 16-35, or Sigma 12-24 designed for FF.

nah, the mirror has s afeguard where it wont go anymroe if it hits soemthing

Why I haven't purchased this lens sooner. Instead, I had a 24-70L and Sigma 10-24 on a 1dmarkII. Neither of the lens I have used much. The Sigma vignette below 14mm and stopping down. 24-70L not wide enough for city and landscape shots. And I don't shoot people. And it is big, too big and heavy.

I noticed there are quite a few ppl using this lens with cropped cameras. How are you guys finding it? Is it long enough to use as your primary walk around lens? Why did you go with 17-40 instead of 17-55? I'm debating between 17-40 and 17-55. I go on a lot of outdoor trips (hiking, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, etc) so quite many of my pics are landscapes. I like the fact 17-55 has IS and F2.8 but the build quality worries me a bit as my equipment takes a beating from time to time. 17-40 seems nice but I'm a bit worried about the shorter focal length and lack of IS (I don't carry around my 580EX II with me when I'm out on trips). Opinions?

(For the type of pics I take maybe take a look at my smugmug gallery).

I think the focal length is great on my XTi. I'd say it's on my camera about 70% of the time. Some may argue it's too short at 40mm, but I shoot wider shots mostly so it suits my needs nicely. Not having IS isn't a big deal on this lens, I've handheld shots at 1/13 17mm with sharp results. Add to that the L build quality, buttery smooth zoom/focus ring action, internal focusing and zoom, and you have a lens that is really a pleasure to use every day.

Thanks Gary88. I have an XSi w/18-55 IS + 50 F1.8 right now. I've analyzed my pics with a program and looks like I mostly shoot at the wide end and some @ 50-55mm. (the crop factor has been taken into account in the attached pic).

I've rented the 16-35 mm before and didn't find the focal range too bad. I really should rent a 17-40 for a weekend and test it out.

Any other opinions? Has anyone switched from 17-55 to 17-40 or the other way around?

Thanks.

I rarely find myself shooting stuff that I would need IS for, because I am always using a tripod, so the 17-40 was the obvious choice for me. I find it on my camera about 85% of the time, but I am looking for a good deal on a 24-70 next to fill the gap between 40-70mm's

17-40 is the only lens thats on my camera, basically since its the only one I have. Doing portraits with it is amazing, or at least I think so. All I shoot is portraits so thats why it works or me. My next purchase is going to be a prime of some sort.

I like the 17-40 as well and it's my primary lens. I too am looking for something to fill the gap between 40-70. I'm leaning towards the 24-105L IS. I think I'll need 3-stop IS more than 1-stop faster glass. I shot in a dark church during a wedding w/the 70-200 F4 IS and the 4-stop IS literally saved my bacon!

At this point I haven't been doing a lot of indoor/low light shooting, mostly landscapes and cityscapes so the IS is a non factor... but that could and probably will change one day.

As my only car, it was just too impractical. RWD, small back seats, I had a sub in the trunk so nothing ever fit in it, gas mileage was embarrassing... so I sold it and bought an MS3. I miss the 8 every day though, and if ever I can afford to have two cars, I'd get another one.
Here's a few pics I just posted (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7224629#post7224629) in the 17-55 IS archive, (followed by the MS3.)

If you're asking me, I just opened the shot in photoshop, resized it to 750x500 pixels, and then saved it at the highest quality that keeps the file size under the 150k limit. For that shot, I think it was quality setting 9 (of 12.)

PhotoMatte

ok, thanks a lot. i never save anything below the highest setting of 12, so i'll see if that works.

I'd prefer not to post things at lower quality, but having to post an image that's like 500x333 starts to become pointless, so you just need to find a balance of resolution/quality, and at these sizes it's hard to tell the difference between 9-12.

PhotoMatte

Not a problem. The first one has a tiny amount of sharpening done in ACR which i do to all of my shots and the second has been sharpened in CS3.

Yep i have a small amount of sharpening get applied to every shot in ACR then i sharpen again in CS3. There are really 3 levels of sharpening, capture sharpening which i do with ACR, creative sharpening which i do in CS3 and output sharpening which i don't bother with. Here's the EXIF

Let me make sure I understand what your saying:
So you shot a 6-second exposure, and manually carried the flash with you & fired it off on various sides/angles of the car to get everything lit correctly?
Painting with light essentially right? Neat concept!
I guess that's a poor man's way of getting the effect of a multiple flash setup without the extra flashes.
