Let me make sure I understand what your saying:
So you shot a 6-second exposure, and manually carried the flash with you & fired it off on various sides/angles of the car to get everything lit correctly?
Painting with light essentially right? Neat concept!
I guess that's a poor man's way of getting the effect of a multiple flash setup without the extra flashes.

lol so true, but now it made me really want another 2 flashes!
i metered the background so the stratosphere would not be blown out. I set it at f8 and then the shutter speed was 6 seconds, so i put it in manual and walked around the car shooting the flash, like you say at all the angles of the car. I think this works well on white, i wonder what it would be like on a color car

You may have gotten some nasty reflections from the flash if it was a black/navy car with heavy clear coat.
I guess that's what softboxes are for.

btw, i did some testing last night at the photo store.

at -1/3 EV the 17-40 was brigter by maybe that much to 0 ev than the 10-22 on 17. on a 5dmk2
Furthermore, the 17-40 has more left to right distortion, as the horizon bends downwards a tad bit more than the 10-22 on 17mm.

in case anyone cares

I just bought a like new used copy of the 17-40L that should be here tomorrow (I think). It's replacing my Tokina 12-24 now that I've moved to the 1DII. Sad to see the Tokina go, but for the 1mm of extra width (anything wider than 16mm vignettes on my 1DII), I wasn't willing to sacrifice 16mm of length. I'll post some shots when I get a chance.

Simply beautiful...definitely a photo where scouting and being there for the best light makes the photo. This same composition an hour later in the day would be boring and uninteresting (not due to the composition, but the mundane light and such)...but with this light, it's wonderful!

HDR/tone mapping with 3 exposures. No, I am not aftering the cartoon look. :) Just needed to control the overcast sky exposure while getting the rest of the frame exposed. Desaturated a lot in raw. Increase contrast to create a dark, gloomy, hopelessness, and desparate look and feel. Importantly, to make it to look like a metaphor, not a street shot.

Now that I've gone full frame, all of two days ago, I'm wondering about the levels of distortion that I should be seeing in the corners at 17mm - I suppose that it'll be much higher the closer the subject/object is to the lens? Here's the only shot that I've taken in anything approaching reasonable light since picking up the 5D (default LR sharpening and CA correction - click for full size) -

Yes mate, Queensland is in Australia, on the east coast. I also forgive you mate for being an ignorant American. I was in the U.S. in 2001 & a lot of Americans I spoke to thought Australia was in Europe somewhere. Thanks for the encourageing comments on my two images though, it's good for the ego. We are so blessed here in this country, having so many lovely locations to go to & practice our photograpic artform. It's raining here at present & I'm getting anxious for finer weather,so I can get out there & take some more images. Thanks again for your comments.

As I said; I'd been to America in 2001, but only for 3 weeks. God willing & finances permitting, I'd love to visit The Promised Land again. You have some very beautiful scenery there, which I'd love to come & photograph some day. Take care & keep up the excellent work.

Yes, if you've never used one of the ultra-wide angle lenses on your 1.6x crop body (e.g. Canon 10-22mm), at least hold off selling the 17-40L until after you get the 5D and have a chance to try it out.

I love this lens. The more I use it, the more I become familiar of it's capabilities. The colours & sharpness are stunning. The 40D has also been a big surprise to me with its excellent image quality. I'm still learning how to drive it though & have made numerous stuff ups, during that process of learning. I'm just glad I'm not wasting expensive film & that my embarrasing blunders can be got rid of by simply deleting the offender.
Happy snapping to all, from............Edwin "The Aussie"

I rather like the quality of light that the photographer found, no doubt using his brain and artistic vision, which he then effectively communicated to the sensor with a good quality lens.

Yes, the lens has good contrast and sharpness... but c'mon, HE found the colors and the scene, not the lens.

Don't forget to get a UV filter in order to complete the weather seal. Get Hoya or BW brand, multi-coated. I used to own a 24-70L. Too big and too heavy. The 17-40L is great. Is wide enough for my 1dmarkII. Is just long enough to do some street candid shots. Lighter. Smaller.
