Yes you're right mate, thanks for pointing that out for me. I had another look at my Scott Kelby book on Photoshop CS3 & I believe the halos were caused because I got too enthusiastic with the clarity slider in the raw editor. I shall have another play with it later to see if I can rectify the problem.
Cheers.....Ed.

Nice colors and good thought put into this one. The photo would have been absolutely perfect if the chandelier was straight. Thanks kolok, the only way to straighten the chandelier would be to use some kind of distortion correction software. I've tried using Photoshop Elements distortion correction tool...but it never comes out right. Anybody know of a good program that works well with the 17-40?

Might need a little crop and to rotate slightly to compensate for the software correction. Really nice colors on the photo though!I've done that before on other shots - with this one as you can see there leaves no room for cropping. Half the stairs would be cropped out if I tried to fix it in that manner.

It's the same image as you posted & shows everything yours does.

I can see the eagle now. But yeah, if you can get the clarity back so that everything is sharp again - you got a winner! You used Photoshop? Elements or CS3/4?

Man this lens is sharp and focuses well. Depsite the distance to the subjects, the very snowy weather and snowflakes forming on the filter everything still turned out really sharp. Here's 2 pics I think turned out well:

Man...only had it a couple hours and I already love it! I'm surprised how accurate it is...definitely more keepers than my 50 1.4 & 85 1.8 but that's probably due to shooting those around f2 and trying to capture shots of a lightning quick toddler. Sometimes you got to stop a lens down but those razor thin fstops are so sexy!
Anyway. Here's one of our BRAVE two year old jumping off the jacuzzi ledge and into our pool (sorry to all of you up there still dealing with snow  ).

I have been trying to decide on a good walkabout lens, that will cross over for portrait work, I decided I dont need anything with a long zoom, does anyone use this for portraits?

You can certainly use it for portraits, just watch out for perspective distortion if that's not what you want (even at 35-40mm, if you're close enough, noses will be exaggerated).

Thanks a lot.
Greats shots, did you visit the bulding on the first one?
I would've liked to if it didn't look so unstable.

hello, well i have a question: does anyone find this lens a little dark? I am thinking of purchasing it later (well have to save up some money) but i am woried that it will be too dark for me? Maybe this problem could be solved with nifty-fifty?
WhyFi
18th of March 2009 (Wed), 09:55
A little dark? If you're talking about through the viewfinder, no, I haven't.
Or are you talking about low-light shooting ability? If that's what you're talking about, yeah, it was a bit frustrating with the 30D as I didn't like to use anything higher than ISO 800. Indoors, I usually used a flash with it or used the nifty.

i used mine today when it was very nearly dark and the lens performed very well indeed. It may be down to the ff sensor but i was well impressed.

Mine is useless in the dark without a flash. Not to mention the garbage camera I have makes it impossible to turn up the ISO and still produce a quality picture.

And an illustration of how WIDE this thing gets on FF - well, it's wide enough to fit in the entire height of the Empire State Building when standing across the street, 'bout 100 feet away -

Well if you're shooting with something better than the 350D then you probably won't mind turning the ISO up. My camera is a complete piece of trash at anything higher than 100iso. I still think the lens is amazing. I would highly advise getting it. I think it's a lens any canon consumer should buy.
