I love this lens and use it almost all the time on my landscape images. Like all superwides, the 17-40 has some pretty distinct distortion at the wider end. Sometimes software correction is the answer to make the image more real to scale. However...sometimes the effect is desired and can make the image more interesting...case in point: I think the distortion in this image actually makes it look more symmetrical:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3655/3321267056_5cbf410398_o.jpg

Another characteristic I've found is what I call "the fan-upwards effect". If you have tree limbs, linear objects, ceiling vaulting or finger-like clouds (such as the ones in this image)...the 17-40 tends to stretch these objects to the outer corners. But to me it makes the image even better.

Fantastic images everyone. My internet is too slow to tolerate browsing every page of this thread, but I am IN LOVE. So many of you have a wonderful talent.

I saw a few mentions of this being acceptable for portrait work. That is what I do best at this time but like the verstility to walk around and take photos as well. Will be moving to Europe in a few months and I think this would be a kick ass lens to have for the such.

So my request! Can I see some of the portrait work done with your 17-40L??

I shoot natural light right now but am learning to use a speedlite. I did see reference that lights would be needed if done indoors. Would a speedlite be an acceptable form of light?

^^^ as long as we're talkin' about the same kind of CA - I'm talking about the kind that gets progressively worse as you move farther from the center of the frame (almost like the R, B, G portions of the image are no longer lining up right), NOT the kind from high contrast edges and usually present in fast primes... like the 50 f/1.4 :D For that, well... LR2 has a "Defringe: Highlight Edges" option... and you can try to play with the Hue, Saturation and Luminance settings for whichever color channel is giving you problems... other than that... you live with it.

So tried out my new lens in daylight for the first time today.
Taken with canon 30d, 17-40L Cheapo UV filter and the lens hood.

Mistake number one-didn't turn down the ISO from last nights self portrait DOH!

Took 50 photos, just experimenting really, and trying not to get blown away! its so beautiful outside but very very windy.

Haven't done a lot of PP, just sharpen and color and levels adjustments and cropping, any suggestions to improve are happily received!

Oh and I did something I don't normally do I let the camera auto select the focus points, rather than me manually do it.

Here are my three favorite photos from today:

1,
27mm 1/250. F11 ISO 250 I think this needs more pop

2,

Thank you for the portrait!

After some consideration I went with the 70-200L IS F/4. Since we're planning a few more safari's this June etc. I figured it made more sense for right now.

After a few more booked sessions I am totally getting my hands on the 17-40L. I'd like to hit up Victoria Falls in September or so before we leave Africa for good, and I think I'd be in heaven with that lens there!

Thanks everyone!

I bought this lens recently, and before I ever used it i bought a 5D. Being as wide as it is on FF, I was going to resell it...

Well, I finally got a chance to use it today. The colors that this lens reproduces are absolutely stunning. I've yet to see a lens pick up the wonderful shades that this guy does. Couple that with how sharp it is, and being that I would only get <$600 for it, I don't think I'll ever see a reason to get rid of it.

I wish I would have known how good it was a long time ago...

Hello,

Should have got this lens months ago when I picked up my 5D from a friend but didnt and had to pay the 25% UK price hike but found a very nice camera shop which took my 70-200mm F4 in part-exchange (after looking at a year of my shots only time I use a tele is the zoo and my 400D and 55-250 IS works great for that).

Was contemplating between the 16-35mm mk11 and the 17-40mm before seeing this thread...my mind is made up ;)

Photos or price? ;)
Photos both are Excellent, price will be this lens a winner.

How many of you use CPL filters on your lenses, do you use them when the hood is on, how deos that work with rotting the filter?

My filter is brass, thus it doesn't rot...but it does rotate! :p

With the supplied hood, it's simple, since that hood is so wide. However, I use a 17-55IS hood on my 17-40L, but it's still easy enough to stick your hand in from the front & rotate the filter around by gripping the front of the rotating ring (instead of the sides).

OK, it is up to you, no harm to get this lens, seems many have this lens more than 16-35L due to price, and as you said, maybe many are not looking for low light and extra stop.

Decided to "downgrade" my 16-35L MKII to the 17-40L.
This is the third time around for me and this lens.
I did it mainly because I bought a 5D MKII, and a lens in this range would be a specialty lens for my shooting style.

Anyways, got it today. Just messing around with one of my cats...

It was a decision i made based on need. that was my second time around with the 17-40 and to be honest i was at the short end of it most of the time anyway so im not gonna forget the idea of a prime in that range but having the ability to get some zoom was nice if i needed it. i've been eyeing the 15/2.8 fisheye lately.

You should give Lightroom 2 a shot. It does that for you, but without any IQ loss via use of filters. This would have been pretty easy to do in that app.

Nice, as usual!

I'm curious - do you correct for perspective distortion in PP or are you very deliberate about leveling your camera?

i_am_hydrogen
27th of April 2009 (Mon), 15:29
^Both, actually. I try to rely primarily on keeping the camera level because perspective correction doesn't always produce the most appealing results. (Buildings can look squat. Portions along the edges of the photo can be cropped out.) There are times, however, when I want to use wide-angle distortion in an artistic way. It just depends on the particular composition.

Thanks. The third picture is the best of a bad bunch -- I was so busy concentrating on getting the sparkles of the water with the CPL that I forgot to check the sky -- at least the dark patch is to one side on that photo, most of the others have it slap bang in the middle of the sky.

I don't have a FF body as of yet so I don't have much of a point of reference. At the same time I feel that this lens is pretty wide for a crop body. Obviously opinions vary and some others might want to look at in the 10mm range.

I love this lens on my 50D. 17mm is wide enough and 40mm is long enough for me to use it as my walkaround lens. I'd be lost without it.

Elfie, nice job on those capturing the serenity of the prairies - the bottom photo is more poignant to that effect where the road leads to the horizon. Very nice. Are those straight out the camera?

What settings did you use (metering, aperture, exposure, focus point, etc)?

Greets!
