Thanks. Each shot consists of three exposures tonemapped in Photomatix. I tweak saturation and contrast levels during the tonemapping process.

Ah that's what I did for one of my pics too. Will have to try that at night. :)

Can someone let me know how well this would work in an aquarium (the Atlanta one specifically)? I am wondering if this or a 16-35 would be a better buy for me.

For ppl using 17-40 with a cropped camera, are you using the stock lens hood or are you using an alternate hood?

I just read through this page:
http://blog.davidburren.com/2006/11/alternate-canon-lens-hoods.html

EW-83J is recommended but the hood is HUGE! Would EW-83H be a better choice for pairing with the 17-40 on a cropped camera?

about myself, i just use that attached or included hood when available with the lens and i don't look for alternates, but i may look for any hood if the lens coming without a hood like with my 10-22 or 50mm 1.4/1.8 and/or all non-L lenses maybe.

I use the EW-83J, It saved my lens once to...

I was doing some photo on my tripod with my 40D + 17-40 with the EW-83J, when my camera suddenly drop.. I didn't push the safety lock on... while knocking my head, I took my camera and nothing was broken, except a big scratch on my hood. Thanks to the EW-83J...

Isn't the EW-83J quite big? Would the 24-105 hood be a better choice?

It's "big," but it fits around the lens nicely when stored. So if storage is the issue, it will be fine, but if size while in use is an issue, I'd look for a different lens...

Yes you can use the 24-105 hood (EW-83H I believe), but you'll get less protection. the EW-83J was made for 17mm on a APS-C body, so it will give you the best protection possible.

I got this lens last week (with an EW-83J thrown in!) so if you want to see how it looks, here are some photos:

That's specific. :) I guess most aquariums are so dark, that the dynamic range between the very bright aquarium windows and the place that you shoot from, will be so high, that you can't get the best of both worlds. Your best shot will be to place your human subjects 90 degrees to the window and have them lit that way. I've used the 17-40 that way.

I really like the EW-83D. It is much more compact than the J model. I dont think I could make it work for the 5D.

http://www.pbase.com/dbdors/ew83dii_hood

I use it with a 5D. Works well after trimming. I had my gear stolen (including the 17-40 and alternate hood). I just got a replacement and ordered a used EW-83DII from Adorama. I have to start over with trimming it a bit. But I liked it before so I'm doing it again.

No, I'm not really a filters guy. I deliberately underexposed the shot to let the colours of the sky and clouds come out more, so, of course I later on had to lighten up the bottom part again in photoshop to get the effect I was looking for.

Great black&white conversion! I'd personally would've framed it a bit different though, I would try to leave elements like the bridge out of the picture. Just a wide, empty field with an amazing skyscape above it all, that's what I would aim for. But again, nice tones!

This lens is similarly priced to the Sigma 12-24. I don't have anything wider than 24 and can only afford one lens right now. I'm tempted by the Sigma for the extreme width and the lack of overlap (I'm not against overlap, but it costs money I don't really have right now).

Any clinching arguments?

On the 5D that'll give you the widest of wides. I think in your position I'd go for it.

Ive got both and I love em just as much.

Pro for the 12-24 is its build and wideness. Feels a LOT more sturdy and robust vs the 17-40L and the hood is metal (although not removable). Downside is its not a constant aperture but then looking at it, I can see it being targeted to more landscapers so stopping down is not an issue IMO.

Pro for the 17-40L is a 77mm filter ring diameter which is awesome since I own a Cokin P set. For the 12-24, I need a whole new filter system hence why I have not bothered. USM works better than the HSM on the Sigma. Sharpness overall even wide open is much better but its not by that much.

If there is a POTN meetup around your area or maybe if you head into London sometime and I am around, ill be happy to let you have a go. Personally, if I had a choice and didnt shoot rig shots on cars, I would stick with the 17-40L. The 12mm is glorious on a full frame even a 1D but I rather get something which works in line with the rest of my lenses such as filters.

I'm not in Britain at present but may be shortly. Thanks for the offer. Is it possible to fit external filters, for lens protection?

Can you compare the 17-40 with the 16-35? Because if I go for the Sigma this time around, one of those two would be next.

You can filt 82mm filters on the 12-24 BUT you have to use the filter adaptor provided and you can only use it at 24mm unless you want circular vignetting.

If you want a filter system, would need to go for something like a Cokin X system for it.

I only prefer the 17-40L due to colours and sharpness overall since I shoot wide open more often than not.

peterbj7
4th of July 2009 (Sat), 10:47
That preference - is that relative to the 16-35 or the 12-24?

I remember now that I decided I wouldn't be able to leave a filter permanently on a 12-24, and you've just confirmed it. That's a problem here in Belize, as the salt & greasy air mucks up lenses/filters in no time. I'd be forever cleaning the front element, which can't do it much good.

Just as an aside. My two "L" lenses and my nifty 50 seem to be surviving the climate here pretty well. I take the filters off frequently and wash them (far kinder than using lens cleaning solution & paper), but that's all. The lenses themselves are as crystal clear inside as when new. But friends with Nikkor lenses seem almost universally to have problems with dust and greasy salt air getting inside. One person replaced her two years old 80-200 with a new one because you could barely see through it any more, and after 8 months the new one is already starting to go the same way. It's across the board - pretty well all Nikon owners are affected. I don't know anyone else with Canon body/lenses so I don't know if I'm exceptionally lucky.....

I would say, if harsher conditions are going to be a potential issue, I would go for the 17-40L. The 16-35 has 1mm more wideness and f/2.8 but I really cant see the worth overall.

If you need something around that range for use in low light conditions and no tripod, 16-35L but if you just need something for wideness and light is not a major factor, 17-40L. If you need something wider than 17mm, take two shots and stich them together. :)

It depends on how afraid you are of high ISO. The major selling point of the 16-35L, is the F4 aperture on the 17-40 lens- its a well known weak point. I havent found it to be a problem in low light i just adapt the composition so i can find something to lean on:) that or you could start to carry a monopod. Infact in low light i rarely shoot wide open, i will keep it set at F5.6 and work around it.

I love this lens, i see no point in the expense of the 16-35. However if you shoot indoors and need wide perspective and the ability to hand hold, on a regular basis i.e. your a wedding photographer, then sure you might find the F4 a problem.

Just my opinion, though i do have an odd philosophy of slow zooms and fast primes so you might want to ignore me :)

Sure it can be, it is only f4. I find this pretty rare though, especially on a FF where the wide is really wide. At 17mm, the added DOF and shutterspeed 'allowance' let's you handhold to quite low speeds like 1/20 or possibly 1/15. Besides, there is always the ISO bump.

F4 on my copy is as sharp as 5.6 or even 8.... I'm really amazed actually at how sharp it is.

as already said i dont really think so. With iso and as long as you have steady hands you can get decent results, this is at f8, iso 4000 and 1/40 sec. Im sure it would have been a lot easier at f4

Just one fireworks from a rehearsal. Got better shots though, but blocked by the white floating white lanterns. Sigh....

Wow!

That's one beautiful shot that must have required a lot of climbing, to be able to take that! Unless a helicopter just dropped you off to take the shot? :)

Kudos to you!

Cheers!

I am so drawn into this one. Very nice. Great depth and awesome color contrast. Is this tonemapped? Either the clouds are playing tricks on my eyes or it looks like your approaching halation on the outline of the leftish building? If so I would see if you can mask it out...print it in large size and hang it on a wall
Rob

Thanks. It is tonemapped, yes. There was this electric blue sky looming just beneath a loose cloud deck which may have created what looks like halation. Then again, maybe it is halation. I don't see it on my monitor, though.

Rockerfeller Plaza. I forget which this building is of the many buildings that form the centre. Taken with a 5D.
