Hydrogen, nice pics. I'll show ya guys sharp! By the way I was too lazy to correct for distortion but at least this gives you an idea of what kind of distortion is present on the 17-40L on full frame @ 17mm

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v69/vvg2002/stearns1-1.jpg

Note that I focused and recomposed on the pipe. The background wasnt as sharp as I wanted to be, should of stopped down further but lighting wasn't so hot. But at 17mm i wouldnt be taking that much of a risk anyway. Oh well enjoy!

So far im liking this lens very much so! Its been great so far! Im excited to grow my photography skills with this lens for sure!

Although, im adding unsharp mask (300/.03/0) after i resize in photoshop as i was told thats what canon reccomends. But, at least to me, its looking a bit over sharpened.

I guess it's one of those things..."it will always be there, so no rush"...or where my eyes are set on sights I cannot reach, whereas in other countries there are people thinking the same about where I live and the surrounding areas lol.

G'day again Pward1980. I've read tons of books about "The War Of Northern Aggression" mainly from the Southern perspective. I too would love to visit some of the battlefields, Bull Run, Petersburg, Shiloh, Vicksburg & last but not least Gettysburg. Did you have any of your ancestors fight in that war? Have you taken many Landscape images with your new lens? I've found that the 17-40L beats all the others for sharpness & colour. If you haven't yet, I encourage you to get out there & take some landscape images of your beautiful part of the country & post them here for all to see.

I am unsure as to whether any of my ancestors fought in the Civil War....but I'm sure they did. I once did a brief check on the history of my surname (although no telling how accurate that is), however, it shows that settlers with my surname settled in Norfolk/Chesapeake Virginia in the 1620's (which coincidentally is where my father's family was from).

I have yet to take any landscape pictures....or very many of ANY pictures for that matter, other than candid pictures or just pictures of random things. I currently work a full time job during the week, and a part-time job on the weekends, so time is usually a limiting factor in my free time :(

I do hope to soon take a trip out to Battlefield Park and see if anything catches my eye. I haven't been out there since I was a kid.

Good on you mate. I'll look forward to seeing the next lot of images you post on POTN. Battlefield Park sounds like a good place to start. I was in Richmond in the autumn of 2001 & was amazed at the beautiful colours of the leaves on the ground. Thanks for the pretty scenic image of Oak Hickory Forest, I love the beautiful autumn colours. The Appalatians is another place I'd love to visit. I've seen so many pictures of it in National Geographic magazines etc, but that's not the same as seeing it in person. Depending on the distance, you have to be a bit careful about perspective distortion. Models' arms, elbows, etc. placed in the 'wrong' direction towards the lens, or being too close to the lens, may cause abnormalities.

In this instance, I had about 6-7 feet, so it worked just fine. Colors/contrast/sharpness, well, we all know how this lens performs in that dept. :)

Oh, and thanks. :)

Thanks Edwin. I do use it from time to time, that's no question. Indoors, in studio, it matters not what the DOF is like. Outdoors, on the other hand, f/4 is sometimes 'too' slow. Still, one has to be careful with the lens, otherwise a person/model can become distorted, fairly easliy. ;)

Appreciate the comments...and in time, I'll continue to work on my lighting structure so that there is a bit more separation from the bg. In the original shot, at full size, one can see it. In the jpeg version, it kinda disappears...:(

not the greatest color and clarity, but we just had a storm pass by and this was the end result. The colors are actually pretty accurate...the dark rain clouds are still hanging around, and the sun, (though setting), is peeking through the clouds, giving off a greenish cast.

I hope these look a little better than the last time I submitted them. It's hard to make fine adjustments when I only have the standard editing software that came with my recently bought Imac. After I pay this brute off I'll look into purchasing CS4.

What editing software do you have on your P.C. Phillip? If you have Photoshop, you could try cropping out the trees at the side of the image & the roof top. Use the cloning tool to eliminate the sensor dust spot. Try using a plastic bag when changing your lenses, as this will help to stop sensor dust getting onto your sensor. I've also found F16 is a good daytime aperture for great depth of field. Good try mate, at least it shows you're out there & experimenting with your equipment.

For Edwin Harvey
The real detriment is the direct flash, to be honest. A better investment would be an external flash gun that you can bounce...it will provide much more flattering light for portraits.

Yes Jman13, you're right, an external flash would do the trick. That one will have to go on my wish list for the time being though, as there are too many other things I have to buy first.

Yes, but flash also should be one of the things you have to buy first, the first time i entered photography with a DSLR after a P&S i went to get a flash no doubt, remember, it is a light which you need it always.

I have Photoshop, but I didn't really do much to this picture except reduce the file size so i could upload it. I didn't do any cropping.

I saw the dust spot, but I'm not sure if it was dust on the senor or just a rain drop on my lens filter (it had stopped raining about the time i took the picture). I took some shots after that and didn't seen the spot *shrug*

You're right about the $ aspect of photography Phillip, one needs buckets of cash to do it justice. I'm getting there slowly, buying all the equipment I need to take the images I want to take. So far I have purchased a Canon 40D,17-40L & 70-200L I.S. lenses, which isn't too bad an achievement for an old pensioner. Have another go at the image of the rainbow mate & post it again. Keep up the good work young fella.

Yes maico3,the 17-40L is rather expensive, but you'll be rewarded for buying it many times over, after seeing the results of the images it takes & to top it off, it's a lens you'll have for life. There's no substitute for quality & this lens is quality #1.

Agreed. The all around quality of the 17-40L is something to behold. It really is not an exaggeration. The lens just exudes quality, both in its images, handling, construction and looks.

Yes it was an aquarium, and a quick burst of only 2 shots. It does sink fast and make a hell of a mess. There was a 430EX on the left side pointed up with a stofen diffuser.

G'day Phillip.
I've had the 40D for about a year now & find it to be an excellent camera. It has very good image quality & more features than you can point a boomerang at. Don't be jealous of my 70-200 F4 I.S. Phil, just save up your green backs & purchase one for yourself. It's also a very good lens & never fails to deliver the goods. It was a toss up between it or the 70-200 F2.8 I.S. After much research using P.O.T.N. I decided on the 70-200 F4 I.S. Most of the close up shots of the wedding in my Facebook album are shot using that lens.

One thing that you cant prepare for is the pace, its so hectic you dont stop to enjoy, its all about experience, and reflection time is when your back home. I don't think that it's so much hot spots as it is flat light - the flash isn't giving enough shape to her other than shadows in the eyes and lower part of her face - it could be more flattering. When you sneak up on her again (:D) I would see if you can bounce the flash off of a side wall to bump up the three dimensionality.

5D [even with grip] + 17-40 is like a toy, so easy to handheld for longer time than 1Ds series + 24-70 or 70-200 f2.8IS, but if i am on those so high floors shooting, i am sure i will have blurred shots even at 1/2000 shutter speed.

http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv262/Phil21080/IMG_0358.jpg
I just got a refurbished 40D from Adorama, and it seems that all of the pictures aren't sharp (all of the pictures I've posted here have been on my Rebel XS with the 17-40). I've not only tried this lens, but also my 50mm f/1.8 and 28-135, and get similar results. At first I thought it was maybe some settings I didn't have set correctly. for picture style, this was set to user setting, sharpness +5, Contrast +2.

Or if there's a specific picture I can take that would provide better feedback, let me know.
