please tell me if I'm going crazy...but does this look soft or slightly out of focus to anyone? This was taken with the 17-40 and a Canon 40D.
http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv262/Phil21080/IMG_0358.jpg
I just got a refurbished 40D from Adorama, and it seems that all of the pictures aren't sharp (all of the pictures I've posted here have been on my Rebel XS with the 17-40). I've not only tried this lens, but also my 50mm f/1.8 and 28-135, and get similar results. At first I thought it was maybe some settings I didn't have set correctly. for picture style, this was set to user setting, sharpness +5, Contrast +2.

Or if there's a specific picture I can take that would provide better feedback, let me know.

It is soft and also out of focus, FAILED!!!

kidding, this is a great shot, i don't see those issues you are talking about, and don't try to make this lens as the queen of the sharpness, use it for what it should be and be happy, ENJOY!!! ;)

If all your results are similar, have you tried adjusting the position of the eye-piece on the view-finder? If you are manually focusing, it could look fine through the viewfinder but come out wrong because of the position of the eye-piece. I had this teething problem with my 350D.

PWard

I was using autofocus. are you referring to the diopter on the viewfinder? yes, I adjusted it so the autofocus points look sharp to me.

Rachel B
6th of August 2009 (Thu), 17:23
are you using a filter on your lens? if you are try without, also depending on the weather outside it can make the picture look hazy, I have that problem when taking pictures in the evenings, the humidity causes a haze.

PWard
6th of August 2009 (Thu), 17:50
Yes I tried with filters and without. In addition to the 17-40, I also tried with my 50mm 1.8 and 28-135 and results were the same, indoors and out :-( normally with my Rebel XS, after a shot, I can zoom in all the way and see the nice sharp details. On the 40D, the images looked fuzzy, and in a lot of cases, I could see noticeable noise. I found a thread on POTN where people have gotten defective 40Ds from Adorama, but eventually (after the 2nd or 3rd exchange), got the issue resolved. I hope it doesn't take that many times.

@ PWard - they don't look 'something's broken' bad. To me, it looks like a few small things - a little bit of underexposure, a little bit of noise and a little bit of softness. You almost never NEED 1/2000, and things don't always go right for me when I have a SS that high - back the ISO down to 100, and raise your overall exposure. Stop down when you need to stop down, or, even better, only shoot open when it makes sense - when it's to focus attention with selective focus or when it's necessary because of light.

Also, in your position, I would take this as an opportunity to start gettin' comfy with RAW - you're ready for it! Oh, and don't shoot parking lots at f/4, 1/2000th, ISO 400. :p

PWard
6th of August 2009 (Thu), 18:00
I wish I had kept my other pictures I took. I was getting fed up with it that I kept deleting the images after I took them. The parking lot shot was just a quick pic to show on the forum. Most of the other pics I took I used a 430 ex ii, and my iso was usually 100 or 200. Even the 50mm prime I stuck on it didn't come out sharp.

When comparing to your XS do they have the same in camera setting regarding sharpening?

As for the noise make sure you have a proper exposure. Check the histogram and never trust the LCD on your 40D. Under exposed pictures and even areas of shadow can have noticeably more noise than a properly exposed image.

PWard
6th of August 2009 (Thu), 18:26
Yes, I did use the same user settings and picture styles. When I got the 40D, I had it and the XS side by side and went through the settings to make them identical since I liked the nice sharp images the XS produced.

The pics I took I tried both manual and Av modes.

rnb2
6th of August 2009 (Thu), 19:56
The 40D is actually kind of known for pictures looking soft on the LCD - with the bigger screen and the same resolution as earlier bodies, everything tends to look a little bit less sharp. I'm not saying your AF might not be slightly off, but don't give up on shots because they look soft on the LCD.

in-camera=monochrome and you can use a single raw to make an HDR or bracket three shots and create an HDR. you can also do the BW conversion in PP

all of those HDR pics look awesome! What program do you guys use? I downloaded photomatix to play around with, but still trying to figure out the settings.

this pic wasn't intended to be used for HDR, and in fact, the two images I used are a bit off and were at the same exposure. (excuse the saturation....it was a cloudy day so I saturated the heck out of it).

I saw in an earlier post an HDR image was created using only 1 image. How was that done? The Photomatix program wouldn't let me do an HDR image unless I had 2 images.:(

Open the Raw file, make and save two copies with +/- 1 or 2 stops, and then, use the 'three' files that come out of the one, to merge them into an HDR. Of course, I always figure that multiple shots are better...but, some get away with just the 1. ;)

To hz536n.................Great images, except for the over saturation of the colours. Is this because of the software used to edit them?

PWard
10th of August 2009 (Mon), 09:26
HDR images can have a "surreal" effect to them. Colors can either be dulled down or saturated. I still haven't gotten the hang of it yet, and I tend to oversaturate my attempts.

I know this HDR pic looks horrible...but it was taken with the 17-40 so it qualifies

Edwin, yes I got it back. Ipurchased the refurb 40D from Adorama and it just seemed like it had focusing issues, so I sent it back. They exchanged it with another one.

To everyone, do the two pics I posted today (clouds and watch) look ok as far as a 40D and/or 17-40 would go? I didn't do post processing on either aside from resizing (and cropping the watch). Agreed.

As for your question about the shots, a couple of pages ago...the lighting on the watch is good. Could it be 'perfect' yeah, but, you'll get there, over time. Just keep shooting, and toying with the idea of light. It's really helpful. :) I like the watch...very classic and classy. ;)

As for the one with the clouds...well, they're just clouds. Nothing really 'too' interesting about clouds unless they form a complete scene, I suppose. I never get why my wife lifes to take pics of clouds...but, hey, she likes it and I don't complain.

Here's one, an HDR, from a Sunrise in Saint Augustine yesterday. A group from Jacksonville got together and went from Saint Augustine to Cedar Key yesterday...Sunrise to Sunset. ;)

Thanks. Those two pics weren't really anything specific. Before, my 40D was sent in because it seemed all of my photos seemed real soft or slightly out of focus. I just took those two shots to test it out when I got it back, and wanted other opinions on whether the focus seemed acceptable for a 40D now. :-)

I like the sunrise pic. I haven't quite figured out to do HDR yet. I've used the Photomatix program, and after combining the 3 pics, it seems like when I toy with the tone mapping settings, they just don't look right.

^^Ahhh, makes sense now. Yeah, I'd say it's pretty acceptable. Just go out and shoot lots of pics, at diff. apertures, shutter speeds, etc. and see how it goes. From what I can tell, looks pretty good.

I don't use photomatix...just photochop. ;)

LightRoom2. I mean, I have CS4, but I rarely have to resort to it now that I know LR2 as well as I do (and I'm no uber guru). It can be had for $99 with student pricing.

I may have to. I used corel draw years ago and found it very intuitive. Adobe illustrator seems to be written anti-intuitive so collages can build courses around it. Unfortunately the graphics dept at my work was outfitted by a couple collage boys so we have Macs with Illustrator. We can't afford to have the graphics guys anymore so I am having to do some graphics work as needed. I'd sure like to find Stephen Jobs and cram these macs up his ^*%(*%(*(*! I'm sure photoshop is the same way.

LR2 for me as well. The work flow in LR2 is just amazing for large amount of pictures. I usually do the editing in LR2 first then for the selective few where I want to do more (i.e. layers, B&W, etc) I'd open the RAW file (with XMP since LR already created those) and play around with them in Photoshop.

I don't believe that any large 'city' is boring. Hardly, Edwin. ;) Nice shots here.

I'm taking it that you used a single exposure, correct? The last one, for example, your DOF is so thin, that a 'fast' number will not suffice. You'd have to open up the aperture more so that the buildings on the edges are also in clear focus.

1&3...those are the perspectives that are winners, here. This way no on subject competes for attention, versus another subject. ;)

Lovely City, I failed to mention, earlier. So, thanks for sharing. :) Look forward to more. ;)

Now, I wonder if you converted them to B&W, and played with some dodging and burning, whether you'd be able to bring out more 'depth' in the image. But, as is, it's a very tranquil scene. Yup, definitely keep an eye out for CA in the corners - the good news is that it takes a couple of seconds to fix in LR, PS, etc.

I think that it's pretty sharp, wide open, though I tend to use it stopped down more at the wide end, for DoF - f/11 is probably most common for me.

With a FF camera and 17mm, you can get some pretty crazy distortion near the edges - sometimes fun, sometimes an unwanted surprise when you're looking through uploaded photos. This is especially noticeable when you have a (close) subject that mostly occupies the center of the frame, but does extend towards the edges.

It focuses really close so, if you can get close to your subject, you can still get great isolation even if it's "only" f/4, 'specially on FF and at 40mm. I think that I've posted this in the 5D thread, but this is an example of isolation on FF -

Have already noticed CA and corner softness wide open and wide, but then again it's a wide angle and partly to be expected. Am off to put it through its paces today, so will hopefully have something to post in this thread later on :)

I just moved here from Britain last year, but I like to think of myself as a born again Kiwi :D

It's certainly a stunningly beautiful country and somewhere everyone should visit if they get the chance - photo opportunities all over!
