I prefer the original! Half the reason I use an UWA is to encourage distortion :)

+1

Much better feeling of urban chaos in the original.
You're both probably right.

I've been doing a lot of architectural photography lately and have been on a perspective-centric mode of shooting lately.

Cheers!

Thanks. Haven't had much time to do much of anything last few weeks. been so busy with work. Felt like I haven't even been able to get on the internet at all....which is pretty bad considering my job revolves around computers and networks lol.

I was hanging around my parent's clothing store. That's where the picture of the "psychedelic" black and white shirt and the shoe work table came from. My dad is a 30 year retired Army Colonel, and now he repairs shoes :-) while my mom has a clothing store.

the shirt was hanging on the wall and made me go cross-eyed for a second lol. the work bench was in the back of the store, and i thought I'd try shooting RAW for a change. Then decided to see if I could do what these cool guys are doing and try to make an HDR from the single RAW file. I'm still a n00b :-)

I was attempting to do a single RAW file HDR on the work bench pic, so I was playing around with the settings and came up with the resulting pic. I thought it looked a bit "dark" as well, which made me like it. :)

I never travel without tripod, also i don't go out without tripod, i always keep tripod with me just in case i need it, many times i need slower shutter speed with ISO 100 or 200, in landscapes and outdoors i don't prefer to go with higher ISO even with 1DIII or 5DmkII or any great camera for high ISO, the pros using tripods for landscapes and low light.

The Manfrotto tripod is certainly very sturdy Phillip & shouldn't be out of your price range. I paid 350 Australian dollars for mine about a year ago. You should be able to buy one cheaper in the U.S. Or perhaps you could consider purchasing one second hand ? A good tripod is essential mate, if you want to take good sharp landscapes in low light conditions.

Cheers! I prefered the b&w version at the time. Only did a colour version yesterday and the colours have come out pretty well. They were shot with a 1Ds, but I reckon my 40D would come close. I just shoot in RAW and worry about colour later on. Can't be bothered tweaking settings for colour and sharpness in camera. I don't even get too anal about exposure. As long as it's somewhere near it's all good!

For the fisherman I added a bunch of vibrance and a few tweaks to the blue channel. The blacks and contrast were cranked up a few notches.

Hi, I'm currently looking at this lens, but am worried by this piece I read from the Digital Review - (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-17-40mm-f-4.0-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx)

Although the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens can be a good people lens, it is not a good short-distance people lens. A head shot from this lens will emphasize the subject's nose more than the subject will want.

I'm currently using the EF-S 17-85mm IS 40d kit lens and most of the head shots I've taken @ 17mm from that turned out fine, so I'm a little concerned. Has anyone experienced this what tdp is talking about? Cheers

I'm thinking the reviewer is referring to using it on a "Full Frame" body where a wide angle lens will distort facial features up close and shot wide.

Your EF-S lens at 17mm on an APS-C (aka "Crop") body is giving you a field of view akin to a 28mm lens in full frame where such distortion is not as pronounced. The 17-40 on a similar body will yield a similar FOV.

Managed to get out today. Bought a Sigma 12-24 this week, so didn't use the 17-40 much. Siggy is a fun lens with decent enough IQ but prone to flare and is so wide it's quite difficult to control exposure. The 17-40 will remain my go to lens for 'proper' stuff:

Just to show that plane? because due to Exif, it was taken @70mm f2.8, so neither this lens can go up to 70mm and not it can shoot @f2.8, maybe wrong thread to post this shot, but i hope it is to show the plane not the lens sample.

Yes, very easy. I underexposed the shot to kill the sunlight. Took those two pics between 330 and 4 pm. Pulled the exposure +1.00 and a high contrast b&w preset in LR2. LR2 to me has a pretty good black and white preset.

2. Aquaria KLCC - a tough test for the 17-40 and 5D2. ISO 6400. Some banding is visible. Would using 3rd party tools like noise ninja be able to get rid of the noise? I only use DPP and its sometimes not so effective.

Both images were shot on f8 aperture. Thanks again for your kind comments. I'm unsure how to go about colour correcting images sometimes, don't like to have unnatural colours. I went to a lot of expense some months back & bought myself an I MAC, it's made a big difference to image clarity etc. I'm only using the basic software that came free with the computer, but some day when I can afford it, I'll purchase Photoshop CS4. I look forward to seeing your next lot of images.

I find the easiest way to color balance is to use the eye dropper tool in DPP and after that, to not try to push the exposure to much as that will lead to some of the washed out colors you were getting in some of your previous shots.

Probably what helped me the most was learning to shoot completely manually with my camera and using the spot metering mode to make sure I wasn't over exposing my highlights because once the highlights are blown, it can be very difficult to fix that in post, even with CS4, which has a ton of correction power.

Cheers!
