I bought 24-70 and took pictures of my son's birthday, but then I saw the results and they don't look any better than with my 35-350mm f/3.5-5.8 lens. So I took it back. I don't see any gain from f/3.5 to f/2.8 and for $1100 or more, I can wait. Maybe later I will get the walk-around lens like the 24-105mm f/4. Cheaper and lighter.

You've already got 17-40 covered with your beloved Sigma, I mean Tamron, so you don't need it anyway ;-)
It's a good walkaround length on 1.6x crop cameras.
It's a good ultrawide on full-frame cameras.
You can use it however you like ...

The 17's hood is wide, but not really deep. However the width does cause some issues - even the issued lens case that came with the 17 won't accomodate it with the hood on, or maybe I'm just not trying hard enough ;)
And the hood's hard to fit into my bag.. maybe I have to carry it hood-up and let it stick out over the top of the dividers. On the flipside, that'll mean the hood is already in the right position and ready to use immediately.
Crop camera users might be able to replace the standard 17-40 hood with something else that provides better shading..
The hood for the 24-105L works well with the 17-40L (at least on a crop body). Don't know about full frame though. If you happen to have both lenses, its one less hood to carry along.

I'm using the EFS 17-55 hood on the 17-40L on my crop camera. Putting the hood on reveresed for transportation, it works like a charm in the Lowepro Top Loader 70 :)

Here's my contribution... the 17-40 is a lens that is usually mounted on my 20D for landscape shoots... Occasionally I use it as a portrait lens too... Versatile enough, I must say, as long as you know how to squeeze out the best out of it...

I love the way you dramatise the bridge from this angle. That is what a wide angle lens can do right?
Great shots!
to some extent but not always and with the bridge not so much its just the nature of the bridge and the angle with which the shot was taken, you wld get the same effect with a not so wide lens ie 24-70 and standing back a little.

Cheers guys. :) Its an awesome lense.
Snajczuk, I used I think 2 stop ND Grad filter to bring the sky in check. I Didn't use the ND filter as I didn't really want to do expsoure time of more than 1 minute. I need a light meter to get those loong exposure shots right. hehe

Here's my contribution... the 17-40 is a lens that is usually mounted on my 20D for landscape shoots... Occasionally I use it as a portrait lens too... Versatile enough, I must say, as long as you know how to squeeze out the best out of it...

It's been a weird last few days. I've been on the fence between a 17-40L and a 24-70L. I flip-flopped so many times it was rediculous. Anyhow, I finally pulled the trigger on a 17-40 and I'm glad I did.
It just arrived and I ran outside my office and pulled off a few shots while dodging the rain. These are 100% crops and have no PP whatsoever. Shot in JPEG with AWB, and they were quick shots. It's a little soft wide open at full zoom, but that's pretty typical, and I think these results are pretty darn good for a few quick snapshots. The full size images look awesome.

Wow! There are some amazing shots in this archive. I hesitate to post mine, but I was fooling with my new (to me) 17-40 today and was surprised at how shallow I was able to get the DOF. Granted, I was about as close as you can get to the subject, but for an f/4 it's pretty nice.
The shots are nothing special, but the thin DOF, and fairly smooth bokeh were surprising to me. These two are hand-held at f/4 and ISO 400.

Yeah, that's exactly why I'm asking... I shot a bunch of trains when I lived in MT because access was very easy with it either being right next to public property (so you could shoot from there) or the yard guys were very friendly if you asked first. Here in RI is seems all the places I'd like to shoot, no matter how nice I am, I get rejected....
But I have recently found 2 separate lines I can get to. One is under construction so they have "work engines" and the other is for a dinner train, but since they're done for the season, they're just parked along a quiet public road... I'm hoping this week/weekend I can make some time to go shoot them.
